Question about frozen pipes

We got a lot of heavy, wet snow on Wednesday, and it began to melt yesterday. A leak developed on the first floor where I've never seen a leak before, soaking part of one of the big hemlock ceiling beams. I assumed it had come from the roof, although it was hard to figure out exactly what part of the roof could be the problem.

My son suggested that possibly it was caused by a frozen pipe. It was very cold the night before, with the temperature going down to 9 with wind on top of it. Normally under those conditions I leave a trickle of water coming out of the bathroom faucets, but that wasn't possible with the upstairs bath this time because of another problem. (I'm awaiting a call-back from a plumber on that.)

Around noon the leak stopped. So my question is this: If a pipe freezes and causes a leak, is that from a burst pipe? And if that were the case, wouldn't the water keep flowing from it? I'm wondering if a frozen pipe could cause a leak and then stop leaking.

Thanks!
