Oh, Leslie, I am soooooo sorry. Were you hurt? That is the most important thing, cars can be repaired but sometimes we can't. I do hope you have insurance to cover it without a high deductable.

What happened to the deer?

Leslie...I hope you are alright! I hit a deer at 85 mph a couple of years ago and it scared the heck out of me. Almost totaled out the Denali.

I ran over an already ran over deer last month...it was a real dark spot in the road and it came up so fast I didn't have time to even swerve...I only caught it with the left front and I was glad to be in an SUV so it didn't cause any damage...

Dog gone it anyway! Your poor new car. I HATE driving at night specifically because of those deer!
DS had a small herd of them run right in front of him on his way to Maddie's moms farm many years ago, He hit two and ran over one of them. Damage everywhere. They fixed his pickup up like new...I hope your car gets the royal treatment too. Do you have coverage to get a loaner car while its in the shop? DS didn't, and it was a long 10 days.

I'm so scared of hitting a deer, I'd probably swerve to miss it and flip the car or something.

It did just jump out of the median and I hit the breaks, but it was to close already. I just saw it roll back into the median. I wasn't hurt, just shook up. Dang deer are so thick around that area, and I wasn't going very fast either. Maybe 50-55 when I hit the breaks.
I do have it covered well, but I have $500.00 deductable. It may have to wait until after Christmas to get fixed.
To bad I can't sue the deer.

At least you didn't get hurt...that's the important thing. We have so many here that it is very dangerous...I hate driving at night and I am even nervous with others driving. Our kids drive about 2 hours to their homes in Austin and I always try to get them out of here so that they get home before dark...they have to travel dark, winding, curved roads with hundreds of deer along the way...

The most important thing is that you didn't get hurt, or worse yet killed. The car can be fixed. It's that time of year for the deer to be on the run, as it is their mating season. A doe hit our car the other night. I'm sure she had quite a headache. Luckily no damage to our car. We try to get home before dark now.

Dear deer hit:

I had a similar deer hit about 3 yrs ago and can guess what some of your damage is.

1. The door catches becaue the fender has slid back a fraction of an inch and is interfering with the door. Raise the hood and examine marks around the fender bolts in slotted holes. Do you see evidence these have been forceable moved. The bolt holes in the fender are slotted to allow for fit adjustment. After you have had the car appraised for repairs, you can loosen these fender bolts, force the fender forward a bit and retighten. This may allow enough clearance for the front door to open without interference. Why bother? It may be 2 to 3 weeks before your car gets into the body shop.

2. Headlamp assembly: Still works but likely is cracked somewhere and is not water and dust tight anymore. it'll get replaced.

3. There may be a small to large amount of damage to the hood. Even with slight damage, the hood will be straigntened and repainted with other parts.

4. Radiator, electric fan, electric fan supports, and air conditioner radiator and parts - may or may not be damaged.

5. Turn signals and side lamps in the fenders.

6. Fog lamp, if so equipped.

7. If door work is required, a new rub rail will be needed for the door.

8. Any factory logos on the fender and/or door.

9. The hood, fender and door gets repainted.

Repair time will be at least 1 week after start. Painting may require several days.

The two biggest expences are color matched paint and labor. Apparently, the paint is supplied only in certain sized batches, large and too large. Expect about $500 for paint materials. Not seeing your car, I guess a bill of $2500 to $3000. Request the body shop to save some of the left over paint for you to use for touch-up paint.

Oh gosh..I agree..deer hits can be deadly and not just for the deer..sounds like the angle you and he met was the best outcome..Phew you are safe!!!!!!!
Hubby had the same kind of hit but on the passenger side..The guy behind him actually took the spinning deer on a bit more..

Glad you weren't hurt Leslie. Those deer can do a lot of damage.

On a side note my friend Doug and his wife were riding their bicycles on Makinaw Island (I know I spelled that wrong) and a deer ran out in front of his bike and Doug slammed into the deer and was severly injured - broken pelvis, broken shoulder, lots of broken bones. Good thing he wasn't killed.

Was the deer injured? I hope it wasn't or that you called animal services or the highway patrol to report it. Poor deer.

I got hit in the rear quarter panel of my less than 3 month old truck years ago. In town. Deer just kept on going.

DS got hit by a deer on his motorcycle that same month. It was his first ever trip to the ER for crashing. Just road rash that time thank goodness.

A few years back he a deer in the mountain on his motorcycle. Somehow he hit it broadside and was going so fast he cut it right in half. Kept the bike up. When he walked in the door he was quite pale. I asked what happened and he replied he'd hit a deer. I asked if he went down and was injured and he said no but the deer died. I asked him how he was sure it died and he said front half of deer went to one side of the road and the back half on the other. He call them "rats on stilts" but has a soft spot for all living creatures so it was pretty traumatic for him.

I love to watch deer at the cabin, or anywhere for that matter.
Jemdandy, your assessment sounds pretty close to what looks damaged on the car.
My sister and her DH hit one last week, and it cracked their radiator. Mine is okay there.

Thank goodness you weren't hurt!!! I have a fear of driving at night because of all the deer around us here in the northern part of town too!

Lrslie...I'm soooo glad you were not injured, and yes the dar can be fixed.
I have such a fear of hitting a deer, I try not to drive at night or dusk. After what happened to a friend of mine some years back. She hit the deer, it's head came through the windshield on the drivers side. The deers neck must have been cut as it went through the glass because blood, from it's artery was spurting all over her and the poor deer's mouth kept opening and closing. My friend wasn't injured, but was very traumatized and afraid to drive for quite a few months. Dottie

Just glad you weren't hurt. I knew someone who was killed in a collision with a deer. My MIL hit two deer while driving on the New York State Thruway, separate accidents. Did a lot of damage to her car.

So glad you weren't hurt...Living here in Pa. it gets very dangerous on the roads this time of year...A couple of years ago, my DH hit a deer and broke it's leg...He felt so bad, and not thinking of the danger to himself, cradled the deer's head in his lap until someone could come and put it to sleep...That bothered him for a long time....You just never know!

Glad to hear you're ok, although you may still be stiff/sore from the jolt so take care of yourself Leslie. Your pretty new car too.........dang, but as others have said cars can be fixed easier than people.
