Have you ever known anyone with Tonsil Cancer?

I haven't.But a friend at work just told us he was diagnosed with it,and it's spread to his lymph nodes.He's being sent to Pittsburgh for an aggressive 8 week treatment.We live in El Paso and I was surprised that he's being sent clear to Pittsburgh.I was wondering what the statistics are for this form of cancer? The dr's told him it is one of the one's that really respond to chemo.Hopefully he beats this rotten nasty stuff! He's only 44,and his name's Richard if you'd like to say a prayer for him,it would be greatly appreciated.He's a super nice guy!

Our local TV news-caster had it. She made a full recovery and is back on-air. She took a year off, if I remember right. She just came back in 2009 I think.
She looks fantastic, and didn't even lose her hair. Until she had it I had never heard of it.

Lots of great comments from everyone ... to which I'll add my own two cents ! 'Tradition' - indeed I learned about canning and preserving ( and many many other things ) as a young girl, spending lots of time with my own grandma. Now I am 'passing on' those canning and preserving skills ( and hopefully many many other things ) to my grand-daughter ! 'Food Quality' - Living in upstate NY, up until a few years ago there were commercial vegetable farmers offering all sorts of top quality locally grown vegetables at reasonable prices ... to the point where it was hard to justify 'growing your own'. However, in the last few years, between low priced Chinese / Vietnamese / Mexican produce sold by WalMart and FDA food safety traceability compliance issues for the commercial vegetable farmers, the farmers have switched to growing cow corn for ethanol refineries and soybeans for biofuel. What remains of 'locally grown' produce now carries an Organic label and sells at ridiculous prices. Thus today if you want to obtain 'quality' produce at affordable prices the only remaining option is to 'grow your own'. And canning / preserving what you have grown is an essential part of that 'value' equation. 'Rising Food Prices' - this summer's drought conditions are just a small part of the overall food price situation ... which is driven by global commodity prices for corn / soybeans / wheat / sugar etc. Speculator money has increasingly been flowing into commodities as a 'hedge' against EuroLand economic problems, US money printing etc., and prices for basic foods have already risen a LOT. However, food processors and food retailers have been reluctant to 'pass on' these cost increases to retail consumers for fear of 'sticker shock' ... meaning that the food processors and food retailers have been taking a hit to their profit margins. The point is being approached where the food processors and food retailers MUST pass on higher basic food / ingredient costs if they want to stay in business ... meaning that significant additional retail food price increases are already in the 'pipeline'. And obviously the higher that retail food prices rise, the easier it is to justify growing and canning / preserving your own high quality foods.

Usually sciatica is not related to clicking in the knee. Your problem sounds like it related more to a cartilage problem. One problem that causes knee pain is called "chondomalacia of the patella". It generally occurs is young people, and usually in females. Usually the pain with chondomalacia occurs after the knee is in a bent position for a period of time, and can be relieved by straightening the legs. Recommended treatment usually involves NSAIDS such as ibuprofen or naproxen, exercises to strengthen quads, and avoiding activities that irritate the joint, such as climbing stairs. If you have problems with arthritis, that is another possible etiology of your pain. Problems with any other joints?

Suzieque, O.K. (;-) My FIL was my bestest friend. He was like a father to me, as I never had a father that I was close to. I went to live with my grandmother when I was young and my father remarried after my mother died and he had a complete other family. I got married young, and my FIL was like a father to me. He even finance my way through school, encouraged me in every way. He was an Appalachian mountain man from the hills of Tennesse. He had a fierce Love of Jesus, and a love for all peoples. He would give you the shirt off his back and loved nature, fishing, wildlife, gardening, anything to do with Gods' green earth. He was so smart...He was a radio man in the War. He did the Morris code back then. He had a television and radio store and sold them plus worked on people's t.v.s and radios. He was so trusting of people. I had helped him with his books before dh and I were married. I went to him and ask him why there were so many outstanding accounts that had not been paid. Some were over 6 years old. He replied that the good Lord would take care of it and for me not to worry. God would provide, and Mr. or Mrs. So and So would pay when they could.. He ended up being right. You know God did take care of him, as he never went without, and he built up for himself a nice estate off that little store. He taught me MANY good lessons and life skills. My Dane was not showing signs either we had been fighting a sore on his back leg that would not heal, well it would heal go away then come back. It was during this process that I noticed one of his lymph nodes in his rear thigh was about the size of an egg, he had had that happen before and gave us a scare several years earlier but upon biopsy it was not lymphoma and it reduced on it's own. Once I found the one this time I took him to the vet and she did a full body lymph node inspection and all of them were very enlarged, she took biopsies immediately and sent them to Texas A&M oncology, we got the answer back in just a few days it was positive and it was already in stage 4, they gave him 3 to 4 months. He did not act sick, he had a great appetite, but he began to not be able to get up and down and then would lose control of bladder and bowel, which embarrassed him so much he was such a good dog. When his face began to bloat up and he could not get up we decided it was time. Our wonderful vet and her entire staff came to our home to do it so he would be at home and surrounded by love. It was very peaceful and he is now buried under the big oak tree out back. It was hard on us for a while but knowing it was the right thing to do made it a bit easier. That picture I posted is shortly before we had to put him down he had lymph nodes at that time about the size of oranges all over his body. but he was still playing with little Mia. I know this will be a devastating time for your family, you at least have some of her still with her offspring that is so fortunate. Remember all those great times you shared! I feel your pain and am shedding tears with you.

Yes, a dear friend of ours had it and has recovered. He still has a problem eating and did while in treatment and lost quite a bit of weight, but is on the road to recovery. This was about 3 years ago and is still a 'road'. One always waits for the other shoe to drop, but things look good right now. It's a tough thing to get through - because eating is so difficult, but it can be done. My prayers are with Richard.

Thanks everyone! From what I read on line and at the link from jasdip,it is a very treatable cancer but the treatment is hell.I feel so bad for him.He's sort of my boss and he called me in his office today to tell me.I thought I was in trouble when he called me in....now I wish that was the reason I was called in!We all knew something was wrong,he's been seeing a Dr frequently,but he didn't want to tell anyone until today.This was his last day of work until he recovers.I guess he's leaving for Pittsburgh tomorrow.

I'll put him in my prayers. This is the first I've ever heard of this type of cancer. Hope he has a full recovery.

I've never heard of it either! Adding Richard to my Prayers. I Pray he goes through the treatments with minimal side effects and make a complete recovery!

Have not known anyone who's had it. Interesting he would be going to Pittsburg rather than MD Anderson - assuming he is also in TX.

Oh, that's sad and scary news. It sounds painful, too, anything that interferes with your throat and swallowing just can't be anything but painful or very uncomfortable. I'm so sorry for Richard.

Yes, a friend from knitting has it. She had surgery and chemo/radiation, not sure which or both. She is doing well, but still having a hard time eating. She was diagnosed in the spring. She had been to the dentist, and just thought the pain in her jaw was from her appt..
