My MIL's green tomato pie recipe. Dessert!

Well, I found one that is identical to my MIL's so here it is, as I C & P.

Green tomato pie

4 large green tomatoes, diced (1/4" cubes) or thinly sliced (1/8") green plum-romas equal in amount to that, about 16-20 of them
"Butter the size of a walnut"- 2tbs
2 9" pie shells (one for on top)
1 (?) cup sugar
1 tbs flour
1-2 tbs cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Directions are nice & easy, too: just mix all ingredients and fill pie shell with mixture. Top with remaining pie crust and make vents on top.

45 minutes at 350*F does the trick. This pie's delicious; reminiscent of apple.

U can also make green tomato chow chow, but don't have a recipe for that.

green fried- if you use corn meal for the coating, there is just a little 'crunch'. (hey- read my venting post below- you could make 'green fried tomatoes' like the movie...(with my neighbors in it)!!Yippee!

Two old recipes, that are very good.
Green Tomato Relish
12 gr. tomatoes 2 tsp. mustard seed
4 med onions 2 tsp. celery seed
4 c. white vinegar 1 T turmeric
2 c. brown sugar 2 c. white sugar
4 sweet peppers ( I use 2 green & 2 red)
Grind tomatoes, onions, peppers-drain well, add vinegar. Combine sugars, mustard & celery seed-bring to a boil. Remove from heat & add turmeric. Place in sterilized jars & seal @ once.
This recipe was handed down to me in 1979 from my husbands grandmother I've made it every year since, it's good on just about everything.

Mmmmmm Glenda,Green Tomato Pie! 30 years or so ago an older lady friend from Church made the best GT pies.I had never heard of making a pie out of green tomatoes but it soon became a family favorite.She gave me her recipe but it has been missplaced somewhere.I remember she used much the same spices and technique as making an apple pie.I think it had ground cloves as well as cinnamon,ginger and nutmeg.DELISH! I have to try making one again.Haven't thought of them in years.

The recipe in the link sounds good and easy!

This site has many recipes using green tomatoes. I use the site often, but only try the 4 1/2 to 5 star recipes. I've rarely been disappointed.

I've fried some, and put some egg and milk mix, plus celery salt, pepper, garlic fragments, dill on them for son the other evening ... he liked them.

Was afraid I'd kick him under the table if he didn't!

I've heard that it's good to wrap them in newspaper or put them in paper bags.

Does one store them in cool place, then?

I have some unwrapped in trays beside the window that are ripening slowly. Some deteriorating, so removed them. Cut off the bad parts and cooked 'em.

Seems sort of silly, when there are hundreds of others. Mostly quite green, yet.

Would it have been better to have carted them outside in the sun, in erlier days when it was warmer, i.e. not near freezing?

I've had a cold for a few days - less runny nose, but now have a dry cough. Should survive, with luck.

The older that I get ... the less enthusiasm that I can muster for winter.

Turned on the furnace last week when son was out - observing that the house was chilly ... he's a town kid! It was Nov. 16, last year, I think. But I have a fan heater near the computer ... and in the bathroom.

We used to wrap them in newspaper individually and place them in boxes in a single layer on shelves in the fruit/root cellar (we always called it a fruit cellar LOL). Every so often we would go through and check them for ones that were starting to turn orange and remove them for use, and toss any that seemed to be going bad.

Even a half orange fruit cellar tomato was better than those pink supermarket things in the winter! Although I have to admit we did not use them green and more than a few went to waste. But otherwise they would have succombed to frost in the garden anyhow so no harm no foul.

So yes, I would say store in a cool dark place. They are more likely to rot if they are touching or piled.

Other than adding a few small ones to pickles, I have no ideas for you LOL.

Ed, I have a few green ones too. Since I don't eat fried, the fried green tomatoes are out for me. :)

I have a few in a paper bag with an apple. This is the second batch. They ripen pretty fast that way. Mine are in the pantry, cool, but not really cold.

Here's a recipe for green tomatoes that we Texans love- and always served with Southern Fried Catfish in best fish restaurants. Very easy too! The chopping takes the more time than the making.

Pickled Green Tomatoes
4 gallons green tomatoes (cut into bite sized chunks)
1/2 gallon chopped onions (cut smaller than toms)
4 pounds sugar
1 pint (approx) chopped hot peppers
1 galllon vinegar
1 cup salt

Sterilize jars while preparing ingredients- leaving covered in hot water until ready to pack.

Mix all ingredients in large pot; simmer only until tomatoes begin to change color & start looking "clear." DO NOT allow to boil! (Watch closely...it can happen quick.) Pack into jars, add top & tighten lids. Once cool, wipe outside of jars well. Yummy with peas, beans, etc.

BTW, I also have a super easy recipe for very crisp squash pickles. (Taste a whole lot like bread 'n butter pickles.) Both of these are near the top of most my requested recipes.

I like to slice them, place the slices in a skillet of butter and saute them. NO batter. Wonderful!

I put four ripened ones in a plastic grocery bag on Tuesday when the lanlord was to visit after finishing in the shop ... and he didn't.

Yesterday I took them over to him in the shop.

I'd made the mistake of including an acorn squash in the bag ... resulting in a couple of semi-"squash"ed tomatoes!
