I'm about half way through watching the new season of Upstairs Downstairs on MP. I love it. I liked Downtown Abby but still think this is so much better. It's really edgy this season....abortion, lesbians!!! Maybe it's because I grew up with Upstaairs Downstairs back in the 70's but this is really great television.

I'm enjoying it too. Tonight's the final episode of Season 2 and I'll miss it when it's over. And Downtown Abby doesn't air here in the States until Jan.

Miss Austen Regrets was on TV last night. As always the settings of country mansions, parkland etc were beautiful and Olivia Williams as JA was good but . . . I found it difficult to follow the 'plot', such as it was, and was confused by all the young men Jane flirted with. At 40 years old she was well over middle age by the standards of those days and my, didn't she hit the bottle. I understand that her sister burnt most of her letters and I'm sure Jane would have never started so many sentences with "Oh my God!" Very modern. btw the actress, Phyllida Law, who played JA's mother is 'in real life' the mother of Emma Thompsom.

Minnie, I agree with you about the Forsyte Saga the older version, despite being in b and w and 'studio bound' was a much better production. The long story needed the many episodes to help develop the characters and slowly moving 'plot'. Mary re. Lewis GG. You mentioned him some while ago here. As I had never heard of him I looked him up and found his work is not generally known in England. Maybe Sunset Song was made for Scottish TV. For all you Jane Austen fans you probably know that Becoming Jane a film of a short period of her life comes out over here on the 7th March. Austen purists will probably disagree with the storyline that she was in love with a young trainee lawyer Tom Lefoy but the romance came to nothing. It should be a very pretty film, most of the location shots had to be done in Ireland because Hampshire (JA's county) has become too modern and lacking in bucolic charm. Ann Hathaway and James McAvoy play the leads and her sister Cassandra is played by Anna Maxwell-Martin who did so well in Bleak House and is now appearing in black leather as Sally Bowles on the London stage. And Frieda if you didn't see Bleak House add it to your order, a few more $$$'s wont make much difference. It was the best drama series I have ever seen. I've never been married. I'm 56 now, so I realize it's not going to be easy to find a partner. I dropped out of college in 1980 to take care of my grandmother who helped raise me. Then I became the caregiver for three other relatives in succession, the last was my father, so I didn't get out enough to meet many single men. I got back from Cache Creek casino sooner than expected. One of my cousins wasn't feeling well so we had to come home early. Now that I'm home, I'm feeling depressed, partly because I lost money, and didn't have time to win it back, but mostly because I miss my dad. I thought of how much more fun the trip would have been if he were with me. I remembered the time when we gambled all night together in Reno, when we both were much younger. We arrived home exhausted but happy. I wish we could have had more fun times like that. I thought about my dad on the long ride home and how the world seems so empty without him, even though there were crowds of people in the casino and on the roads and freeways. It's hard to believe I"ll ever feel better, but I know I'm feeling extra weary from lack of sleep. I couldn't sleep well last night, because I was crying so much, more than before. It's a different kind of exhaustion than the kind you get from having fun. I know that no one can take my dad's place, but it would be nice to have someone here to talk over the trip with and to just watch tv with at the end of the day. I love it, Vee. I do like cozies and detective fiction, but I don't like horror. After finishing the last Stephen King I read (long ago), I put the book down on the coffee table and thought how glad I was that it was over. Then--drum roll--I had the thought that I really didn't have to read any more of his books. And I haven't. The only King novel that I read and really liked was The Stand that was a good vs. evil treatise. I know he rewrote it much later, but I haven't read that one. I saw the movie of The Shining with a friend who did like him. She screamed through the whole thing.

At least here in Chicagoland, PBS will reprise Downton Abbey in December and begin the newer episodes in January.

IMO "Call the Midwife" is superior to both the Abbey and Up/Down. We'll get a 'special' of Midwife here on December 30, but I don't know if there is a sequel.

I love Midwife, too!

I laughed outloud when Chummy finally stood up to her "Mater" (mother) & told her that her wedding would be at the local or village church, her reception would be catered by the nuns, & she was going to wear a suit instead of a wedding dress.

"Well, at least let it be white" begged her mother.

& Chummy said, in her perfect upper clahs accent,
"Sorry, no longer entitled".

I adored the original Up/Down back in the 70's. After doing the dishes on a Sunday evening, I'd close myself in my bedroom to watch it before putting the kids to bed.

Midwife was such a treat and I was sorry to see the season come to an end. My local PBS keeps begging for money to bring us season two. I think I will send a donation.

I have to go back to the beginning of the new Up/Down and catch up.

I do love them all. My sister clued me into the Bomb Girls on REELZ, but out cable does not carry that station. It is about the girls who work in a bomb plant during WWII. Luckily, my daughter gets it and records it, so I do get to see a lot of the shows, though out of order it seems. DD came to the show late, and she picks up repeats when she can.

My DH returned from our library with Series One of "Waterloo Road" -- a 1996 BBC production about teachers in a troubled high school that will be shut down unless academic performance can be improved. The blurb says,"Welcome to Waterloo Road, where every day is an education." After watching only the first episode, I'm not sure the teachers are much more emotionally mature than the kids!
