Exactly our thinking! That's why DH and I are able to enjoy such a nice retirement.

I've enjoyed life along the way to retirement. I never said that I'd "do that when I retire". There's no promise that you'll live 'til retirement or what shape you'll be in.
I'll take the ice cream now, thank you.

My husband is a good example of why you should enjoy life as you go along. When he was younger, we did do some trips and stuff, but there were many things he thought he would wait until he was older to do. Now that he is older (52), he has a debilitating blood disease, and does not have the stamina to travel to places that he's always wanted to see. He's always exhausted. He should have enjoyed himself more as he went along.

I inherited my mother's 5 lb coffee can.
Love watching the pennies, nickle and dimes , etc grow.

What I do:
Each week, I write a weekly check, and what is left from previous week, goes in that coffee can.

Amazing, things I have bought with that extra change.

certainly two and i have been planning since i was 19 for retirement, now 21 yrs. my biggest concern thou is that 99% of people haven't planned well enough to not need medicare/medicaid and can not afford private insurance well into their 90's. they will cost us more $$ in the long run when medicare and medicaid go bankrupt w/in 10 yrs as predicted by all well known financial planners including warren buffett... ~ liz

I understand and glad to see you posting again. Miss your humor and comments and hope you are still "kicking"" around.
We manage to travel (well tent camping), work, spend time with the kids and their scouts, church and school, not much TV, no viedo games, visit relatives, etc and when we retired, yes the house needed work, but we traveled all over Northern states and Canada and wish we had done more. Saw so many new places and wished we has seen even more. Not much traveling now, due to health issues and age but enjoy it when we see where we have been on TV.

I was a spoiled child and had everything I asked for. As an adult I became very frugal and save 50% of my income. I want to retire at 60. If I die before that time comes I still would have no regrets. I am able to sleep well at night because I have savings and absoulutely no debt. That feeling alone is worth the sacrifice. I don't have any family that could help me financially in my old age. If I live into my eighties or nineties, I don't want to worry about whether I can afford to pay bills or medical care.
Everyone has different needs. The things that make me the happiest don't cost any money. I love going to the lake and bringing a good book. The only thing I want to do differently when I retire is to have a weekly massage. I don't have any heirs so my money will go to helping homeless animals.

Donna, do you want to adopt me? LOL Just kidding. I wish I could have put 50% of my earnings away. But I raised 4 daughters on mostly just my salary. I know, my choice. But I retired at 57 (turned 58 the next month). Bought a new home the year before I retired. Still paying for that. But, I have a good retirement income. I have a pension, plus social security, and a little bit coming in from investments. I'm comfortable. I just did it a different way. Should I die, my investments will pay off my home, and the kids can sell it if they wish.
So, I walk on 2 legs I guess. I just limp a little (bad knee).

I am crawling--live in a small mobile home--live paycheck to paycheck--do without things I need every day--but I earn an honest living and am not getting government assistance. Married for 23 years and always worked to "help out" now my help out money is my "living". Girls get a good education so you can support yourself in the style you are accustomed to if the prince rides away.

I guess I'm walking on a leg and a half.
I put some away for retirement every year and have been for most of my working life (I'm 52). I use to think I'll do this when I retire or I'll wait for that. Then, when my first wife died of cancer at the age of 42, I started thinking that there are things that shouldn't be put off.
All things in moderation.

I agree, Ron. We try to live that way, too. Never beyond our means, but we occasionally "splurge". Twinkie, my DH, is a lot more inclined to say, "What if we never get a chance to do it? Let's go for it!" than I am, so we balance each other out very well.

Retired at age 54 and never regretted. I'm 68 now.
Luckily, I have wonderful teacher retirement, social security, and some inheritance!

The reason I save so much is because I probably won't get any pension. I work for the airlines and they have taken away pensions at most of the major airlines. Ours is hanging on by a thread. Anything could change at any time and ours will be gone too. The airline industry is not a reliable place to be employed. After 9/11 we took 33% pay cuts in order to avoid bankrupcy. This year they gave management huge bonuses. We got nothing.
