When have you seen three socks on a two-legged person, in one day

After some discoloration on inside of a leg just above the ankle a couple of years ago, we began a course of diagnosis.

Varicose veins, it seems, and they did an ultra-sound, to say that my veins were enlarged, so the little valves at the groin, intended to stop the blood from dropping back down between heartbeats, weren't working right.

So, I've been wearing a pair of black knee-length pressure socks for a time, with (usually) white sport-type socks at the bottom end, in order to delay the wearing out of the squeezy ones, as they cost about $60.00 for two pair (alternate daily, washing each night).

Today took son along while they did an ultra-sound to guide their poking of a needle in to a major vein ... they withdraw a bit of blood, to make sure that the end of the needle is in the vein, then change cylinders and shoot a bit of foam into the vein, that irritates it and causes it to shrink, with the blood flow sent around to other nearby veins ...

... and I have a brown pressure sock on the left leg (and the black one that I wore in there in my pocket.

I'm to walk for a half hour, twice a day, for a couple of weeks.

Can't you just picture how great I'd look in shorts?

It's getting chilly around here - everyone's tralking, "fall", so I guess there's little chance of that, any time soon.

That's quite an image. I hope you wore some of your new underwear for the doctor's visit. LOL! Sending cat calls your way. Enjoy the exercise and the lovely weather!

Hope you can walk inside, as ND is getting pounded by rain and more rain and it is headed north!

ali, what about putting an arbor in and growing a honeysuckle up it? From the edge and in from the driveway to the tree, I'd edge out the grass from that area and curve slightly to the end of the concrete pad in front of your home, the patio area. All the way to the end. Let's give you some curb appeal ;) Put the middle of the arbor in front of the edge of the concrete pad where the car is sitting, about 3 feet in. From the middle of the arbor to the drive and then going up your house, you could create a path that would curve over to the sidewalk and to the front door. For right now, using newspapers and a 5 gallon bucket filled with water, cover up all grass with layers of newspapers you've plunged into the water. Lay them down, overlapping as you go. I typically use about 10 layers of paper. The more, the better. If you can create your path first, either using stepping stones or gravel, lay down something like visqueen and lay the stepping stones or the gravel over to create the path. Remove the grass where the path will be so that nobody trips over stepping stones or gravel. Take out a V shape where you're going into the lawn from driveway to tree and up and over to the end of your home. Remove the dirt and the grass from the V, so that you've got a drop off of sorts and lay your wet newspaper to curve down into the area where the dirt is. Cover the area up with mulch or mushroom compost if you can get your hands on some, except for the path area. By next year, the newspaper will start to decompose and the grass will be dead, but it adds to the organic matter of newspaper and the dead grass. Worm heaven. From now and thru winter, study up on various perennials and possibly a few shrubs that produce berries for our other feathered friends. Next year, push back the mulch or mushroom compost and dig holes to plant. There should be enough room to the right of the path up to your front door, to add in a shrub. Then the other shrubs could go in front of the poles, under planted and going out to the edge with perennials. I prefer natives. They're adapted to our weather, our soil, they make up our ecosystem. Find a list of native plants for your area, and research those plants as to what hummingbirds like and also which ones make seed that other birds will like to eat on. The native plants won't require dead heading, don't need pruned or cut back so they look better....I just prefer them over all. Now an iris in there isn't going to hurt anything ;)...or a peony....both left by the previous owner that I decided to leave and a friend of mine from TN also gave me a beautiful iris that is sentimental to me. But again, those 2 are easy plants. Hummingbirds will love to sit and rest a spell on shrubs you provide and give you a closer look at their beauty. Too much?? Where do you live? Zone 5, but where? lovefornature, you're doing a wonderful job! It's people like you who join GW that make it an enjoyable site to visit. If you like butterflies and are interested in attracting some of them to come to your yard, you could plant a Aristolochia tomentosa or Aristolochia durior. Another plant I love that I don't know draws anything in, but blooms in late summer, is Clematis virginiana. Another neat native clematis is Clematis glaucophylla. I've been retired for about 1 1/2 yrs. I worked an evening shift when I worked (3 pm to 11 pm) then had to "unwind" before going to bed about 12 or 1 am. Now -- I find I am a morning person - get up about 6:30 or 7:00, and yes, I do have a somewhat routine that just established itself, but I feel more at ease if there IS a routine (not schedule!). I put on coffee, clean up the kitchen, feed the animals, read the paper, and, because quilting is a major hobby with me, and I'm more productive in the morning, I spend mornings doing more active things, sewing, cleaning, shopping, yard work, etc. etc. I am a little surprised at how busy I find my days sometimes, and wonder how I did everything when I did work. Also - I find I'm cleaning and keeping up the house a little more than I did before - I'm definitely not a "neat freak" but just do like a fairly orderly, clean environment. I'm absolutely loving retirement - I think it is the chance to choose and control how my days' activities go, and I didn't have that before. DH is still working, but I'm pushing him to retire next summer when he turns 65.

Not only that, but there are three pages of entries. Mine is on the last page, but I think it will get lost because it is hard to see that there are three pages. I thought there were just two, and thought my entry didn't make it at first....then I saw another pop up. It's funny, because most of y'all have all seen my recent bedroom make over. I thought that would be a perfect room to enter because I did it so frugally, and was easily put together in a day with everything on hand. I had my essay all done in my head, and photos lined up. :( Fast forward to last night, when I saw the forgotten link. After reading the rules (I am a stikler for rules, and my family often roll their eyes at me. I also never put together anything without reading directions.) and realizing that it has to be a new room "in need", my thoughts turned to the barracks? It's the bonus room, but we call it the barracks because it is so long and narrow. My daughter and I had been discussing changing the bonus room a few weeks ago, so I already knew what I wanted and went to work with the essay and photos. I think I submitted it at about 10:30 last night! Deadline was 11:59. lol Did anyone else enter?

Dianela, Thanks for posting the multiple bush illustration from Austin. It appears that, for example, a bush that normally matures at a 3' diameter will eventually become a 4.5' diameter bush, going by the illustration. Did your multiple, triangulated bushes equal the size increase seen in the Austin pattern? You know, when I asked Mark Chamblee about his multiple, 'side-by-side,' cutting, gallon roses often found among a rose order, he said to plant them as they are and the resultant bush will grow fine.....as an average sized bush when mature. As I wrote earlier, I usually separated the individual cuttings and grew them as one cutting bushes. They did very well. If I can recall, I once did plant a 3 cutting bush just as it arrived from Chamblees, no separating. I remember it growing pretty well, but a dominant cutting among the multiples developed, creating the majority of the subsequent bush's mass. The other cuttings just limped along, not really making the bush larger than normal at all. Moses

Good luck to you, OJ. I hope your socks and walking does the trick. If someone asks about the multiple socks, just tell them you've always been an overachiever. If one is good two are better.

The lovely compression stockings! My mom wore those for years, and she wore them with shorts too, minus the second pair of socks. I don't think that was a matter of vanity though, she just didn't think about wearing a second pair to make the expensive ones last longer :-) They do last a long time, btw. Good luck with your treatment OJ. Enjoy the exercise while the weather is nice and try to get indoors with it when it's not so nice!

Walked in the mall yesterday morning with Bruce ... and did a couple of errands during it.

Walked to a neighbour's to show them the black knee-length pressure sock, the white sport sock over it, and the long beige one, with the white sport sock over it, on the other leg ...

... but it was around 10 p.m. ... and they turned their light out just as I approached their door.

Maybe I'll see them later this evening ... they go to their trailer near the lake about 40 miles away, weekends.

The new stocking is more pressurized than the knee-length one ... I had a bit of difficulty getting the lower leg part down over the heel, last eveing.

Would this heel be a bit too big, do you think?

The neighbours'd gone to the cottage.

Took my secod walk along the paved road in front of the farm about 1 a.m.

Brought Bruce to TO (that's "Toronto") today, now en route home, thught that I hadn't even done one half-hour walk today ... but I walked, off and on, for over an hour where the street is blocked off for the festival in Toronto where Bruce is entertaining the kids with balloons twisted into animal, hat, sword, etc. shapes.

I'm near Hamilton, now, en route home.

Maybe stop for a snack soon - slice of jammed toast down my throat plus coffee has been fuel for the day (till 4:45) so far.

Some time ago, in a discussion about what makes for the good life, my suggestion was first, good genes ... and there's not a darn thing that we can do about that!

Second - an optimistic outlook on life, though when you hear me discussing some of life's, the world's and society's major problems, you might be inclined to question that one on my part.

Third, I figure, is taking reasonably good care of one's body (plus mind and spirit) ... but if you could interview my body about it's life, and the guy that runs its show, it would likely say, "Boy ... can I tell you some things about *him*!!".

Hope you're all having a great weekend.

Hey - plan to retire early: then every day becomes weekend!

Life is good.

It's 7:30 p.m. and I've taken only about a third of the first of my two assigned half hour walks for today. It'll be walking along the edge of the paved back road in the dark. Not risky (unless drunk - I imagine, not having experienced that, thus far).

Bad boy.

I had more beans that needed picking, too ... and wasn't supposed to pick bush beans while kneeling, yesterday, so did it standing up, despite some mild complaining on the part of my back.
