OK,this is just a little too much!

I'm watching Paulas Party.She just made a "fried" pumpkin cake! I guess the old saying "anything is better fried" would apply here.LOL She made a pumpkin layer cake,then dipped each layer in a batter (didn't see what the batter was made of) and fried it in hot oil. Then stacked it with a cream cheese frosting in between and on top. Can you imagine?? And here I was feeling guilty about eating those 2 little chocolate covered donuts! LOL The fried cranberry fritters look pretty good though.Made with jellied cranberry sauce.She freezes the sauce slices before dipping and frying.I may try those.

I really like her but am finding her overuse of the word "ya'll" a little annoying. LOL I say it too but not ten times in one sentence!

That's what killed her for me.. Being born, bred and cast with a deep southern accent and the dialect and nuances to speak with authority... Paula's absurd use of "Y'all" is embarrasing.

I like Paula,,,have never seen her fix many things that dont look sooo good!!! I am a bit tired of the Y'all too, but what bothers me most is when she takes a big bite and talks with her mouth part open...ick!

There is another unpleasant possibility--the black vine weevil, very common in many plants but its favorite is the yew, Taxus capitata. I once planted a hedge of yews and almost half of them started to turn brown, despite the best care. I was mystified. I called the nursery where I bought them and they told me to bring in some affected branches. It was the black vine weevil. There is a spray for it, which I used, tho I almost never spray anything. Some of the plants were too far gone but I saved some others and also the ones not yet affected. Plants grown in huge wholesale nurseries seem to be particularly affected. Many ornamentals can get this tho I've never seen it before or since. I'd be very suspicious that you might have black vine weevils, as they are newly planted shrubs. Google "black vine weevil" for good info about this pest and suggestions for control.

Really hard to overwater one of these as long as you have really well draining soil in a really well draining pot. Check the soil 1/2 day after you water... it should feel only barely damp, not sloggy... if it's still soaking wet, you have a drainage problem. You need to fix that so water really pours out the holes in the bottom when you water this palm... these palms however, are amazingly drought tolerant... I have forgotten to water mine sometimes for over a month and they show little damage from that abuse (indoors.. outdoors they suffer a bit more since they dry out faster). that's one of the reasons these make such good indoor palms... very tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Low light, high light, dry, moist etc. .. .but not sloggy soils.. they will start to rot then. So, If your pot drains super well and your soils are nice and really well draining, you can safely water this palm daily to weekly... should do fine either way... may grow faster the more you water it, though. Every few months you need to really water it well- take it outdoors and water the heck out of it over and over again- this is rinse out the accumulated salts that tend to build up in the soil in potted plants. Heavy salt build ups are really hard on palm roots.

Out of eight planted, three went brown over the summer, the others did fine. New growth and flowers as they should have. I think that I will need to redo the holes for the three that browned, it seemed like they drained too quickly, so either the water never soaked in and just ran off the tops, or drained too quickly out of the hole and just wasn't taken up. They should do great in Tacoma. I grew up in that area, and remember the soil being much richer and better for almost any plant than where i am now. Clay is just not very forgiving.

Thanks so much, Homebody! Although it has not ALWAYS been FUN, we have really enjoyed this house project. I hope your dream comes true very soon...and cannot wait to see pics of your home too! =) I have enjoyed hearing about this Beadboard Wallpaper. I am wondering if those of you who have used it think it will withstand the MAJOR moisture of our 2 young sons' bathroom??? Is this paintable so it can be sealed? I am worrying what the spattering and running drips of water near the pedestal sink will do to it over time if not 'sealed' with paint???? I am still curious about the 'rules' in my initial question as well as these points about beadboard wallpaper. Thanks for the input =)

With so much obesity, heart disease and strokes here in the US, I just cannot watch her program. Does she ever make anything without buttah and cream and sugah?
And her affected Southern speech makes me ill.

I don't watch her...but does she say oil so it rhymes with "coal" ?

My last name rhymes with oil and most southern say it like coal.

I agree with you Koda04, I can't take too much of her laugh. She's always dressed as a witch for Halloween specials so the food network must feel the same way LOL

Madtv or Saturday night live did a sketch about her where she was deep frying sticks of butter.

She strikes me as a happy, warm and energetic gal who has discovered that she can make real money and enrich her family. I like her. I don't watch her though and have seen just a few shows.

I can't STAND Paula and her psuedo southern cooking but Jenny is completely taken by her! When in Savannah we had to go to her spot (buffet) and she's got her books.. blah blah blah..

The problem with MY wife is that she selectively notices the good in people and tosses out the bad..... It's a fault of hers...

She can't be in the GREEN HAT group....

So I can assume Paula isn't in the GHG?

I don't have cable or satellite so I don't have to see her much but the few times I saw her, she nauseated me so much. I did get a chuckle out of her deep-fried, breaded macaroni & cheese though! And watching her pack it away was amusing.

And my Texican uncle always rhymed oil with coal...

I cashiered at Wal~mart for 4 years as a part time job. I honestly have to say she was a major part of the decision to quit. After hearing her on the TV monitors every 30 minutes with her Ya'll, and her oial, and her other drilling into your brain phrases, I had enough. That and the fruits singing about how they love their underwear.....

Linda--LOL! You sound pretty southern, girl!!!

DH's family grew up in Statesboro--not far from Savannah--and they sure say "y'all" a lot. BUT--not every two seconds like Paula seems to. I like her a lot, but lately her recipes are definitely not all that southern. And we really don't deep fry everything. Yesterday she made a turkey dressing with Hawaiian bread and dried cranberries. That ain't southern, y'all!!!!

Paula makes me laugh! I don't watch her very often so I guess she doesn't bother me either. I'd weigh 500lbs if I cooked like she does. omg the calories.
If we all had as much fun as she seems to have and all her bucks, we wouldn't have so much fun complaining.

Did anyone see SNL last night? Debbie Downer, y'all,she is soooo funny! I love the expressions on her face when she complains. Lindsey Lohan and the crew were hallarious!
I can just Debbie her talking about Paula!

I saw her on a special about her life. She was calm, mild mannered and talked softly. I think that is how she is in real life. When she isn't "on stage" with the cooking shows. She also said in that interview and in several others, that her recipes are over the top on purpose. It is her thing, but she doesn't eat like that everyday. She doesn't cook that much for herself either. Her husband does alot of cooking also and she said that they do eat reg normal, healthy food most of the time. But since she is known for the deep fried, over the top foods, that is what she makes alot of on the show. I did like her on her specials, she truly loves her family and takes very good care of those that work for/with her. I do not watch her cooking shows though cause she does drive me crazy with the oil and y'all. And the over the top laugh. But as a person, I do like her very much.

My gf begged me to go with her to her local publix where Paula was puttin on a show...the cost...215.00...I said NO THANKS...that 215.00 would buy a whole lotta groceries! She's definitely found a niche and is milkin it to the hilt!

In the store - $215.00!

On TV - for free (if you can stand her recipes) ... her talk (including all of those "Y'all"s). Plus all of those commercials!

(Sometimes "free" comes at a price!).

But I'd be keeping the $215.00 in my jeans.
