I can tell the difference too. I like pumpkin. The sweet potato is too sweet for me. Pumpkin is "earthier".

I like both, but sweet potato is my favorite.

I prefer Kabocha squash used in place of canned pumpkin.

I've never had sweet potato, but have been wanting to try it. Could I use canned sweet potatoes and run them through the food processor to get them nice and smooth, and then just use the same recipe as for pumpkin pie?

I love both, but if forced to make a choice, it would be sweet potato. My all-time favorite is pecan, though.

I can't really tell much difference; I love them both. Maybe sweet pot. a little bit over pumpkin, but I make pumpkin b/c its my SIL's fav. I never met a pie I didn't like.

Haven't made either in many years, but here's a basic sweet potato pie recipe. Maybe someone else will post theirs.

SWEET POTATO PIE

1/4 c. butter
3/4 c. sugar
5 oz. evaporated milk
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. cornstarch
2 (16 oz.) cans yams, drained and mashed
1 tsp. vanilla
1 unbaked 9 inch pie shell

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cream butter and sugar together. Add eggs and stir. Add sweet potatoes (yams) and mix well. Stir in milk, vanilla, and salt and cinnamon, making sure all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Pour into pie shell and bake 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Lower heat to 350 degrees. Cook until knife comes out clean, 20-30 minutes

I love sweet potato, only if it made southern style, fresh yams, with the Karo syrup etc. YUM YUM I had some homemade ones in LA when we were in the New Orleans area. Glenda yours sounds good---- have you ever used fresh yams and the syrup?

That wasn't my recipe. I can't find mine, but I remember I put nutmeg in mine as well as cinnamon.

Ok, here's Paula Deen's sweet potato pie

2 cups peeled, cooked sweet potatoes
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 stick melted butter
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1 to 2 tablespoons bourbon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1 cup milk
9-inch unbaked pie crust
3 egg whites
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

For the filling, using an electric hand mixer, combine the potatoes, 1 cup of the sugar, the butter, eggs, vanilla, salt, and spices. Mix thoroughly. Add the milk and continue to mix. Pour the filling into the pie crust and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Place the pie on a rack and cool to room temperature before covering with meringue.

For the meringue, using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form; beat in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is glossy and stiff, but not dry. With a rubber spatula, spoon the meringue onto the pie, forming peaks. Make sure the meringue touches the crust all around. Sprinkle with a pinch of granulated sugar. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until delicately browned. Cool and serve.

I like both but I perfer pumpkin.

I vote for sweet potato. We always had sweet potatoes when I was growing up. I only knew pumpkins from pictures in books/magazines.

I've had both, although its been quite a few years since I had sweet potato pie. Just a titch of difference in the taste.

sweet potato for sure......Everyone all ways told me that they had never eaten pumpkin pie as good as mine...I just snickered a little and kept on going.......Some people feel they have to ...just have to have pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving........so I gave it to them........sort of...

I love Sweet Potato Pie, Pumpkin Pie and Winter Squash pie made from Butternut squash... but if my daughter is eating with us... my Sweet Potato Pie suddenly gets renamed... She refuses to eat anything with sweet potatos in it.. but loves my 'pumpkin pie'...lol

I am the official Sweet Potato Pie Baker for our church Thanksgiving dinners... and make 3 of them each year, and never a crumb left... so I guess they like em pretty wel..
This year they want me to add some of my Caramel Apple pies too. so of course I will.. I love my brothers and sisters to be happy..

I think it is really hard to judge between sweet potato and pumpkin pie.

It depends on who makes them, the recipe used etc.

My mother made both. One brother would eat pumpkin, but not sweet potato. I always preferred pumpkin, and still do.

It seemed to be that sweet potato pies were "heavier" than pumpkin.

BTW, sweet potatoes and yams are not the same thing.

I prefer pumpkin but do like sweet potato.I have 2 small pumpkins leftover from Halloween that I plan to use this year.Instead of carving them I painted faces on them so I could use them.
OK,now someone tell me if they have actually used sweet potatoes and not yams (which is not even a potato) in their pies and can you tell the difference?
