Comments (2)I take CoQ-10 with Crestor on my doctor's advice. Many people take CoQ-10 together with their statin drug because statins beat up on the CoQ-10 that your body naturally produces. I have never read anything about CoQ-10 actually lowering cholesterol...See MoreHigh Cholesterol
Comments (14)We lived many years in Germany teaching for the Army. We usually saw the top German physicians since they were allowed to have pay patients and lower ranking ones did not enjoy that perk. Our internist saw that my DH's cholesterol was very high; he said for the next month, don't eat anything with eyes. We were almost vegetarian with that. It did lower his numbers a bit, but the dr. said, well, you never get more than about 10% with diet. He put DH on a statin. As you read about statins, they do have some side effects like muscle pain (although changing statins will usually help), but the news about them preventing heart attack is very strong, to the point that many drs. are taking them regardless of their cholesterol levels. Do some research about statins and I think you will feel better about your prescription and worry less about your diet. We do eat things with eyes now, although we don't go overboard with those cholesterol no-no's. My DH's cholesterol is very low taking his statin. As far as "natural products" go, there is a point where you have to decide if you are going to trust the training and experience of your doctor and try to follow his advice, or not. I don't take anything not advised by a doctor, but I have had doctors (including my German one back then)advise some things that would fall into the arena of supplements. But I can't imagine a doctor telling you, oh forget that statin (which has a lot of studies to back it up) and take this natural cure. Sorry if this offends anyone, but that is my humble opinion on that. We each follow our own path, and events send us down different paths. My father was very convinced about natural supplements and would "hide" what he was taking from his doctors. I did some research once and convinced him to stop all of them and let his prescribed medications work alone. He improved drastically; at least one of his supplements worked against his blood thinners; it's a marvel he didn't develop a clot and die when it hit his heart valve. That sent me down a path of deciding to follow my dr's advice. What sends one down the natural supplements, ignore the dr. path is incomprehensible to me....See MoreWhat do you take for high cholesterol?
Comments (36)Shirley, I read your post just now while eating oat bran. LOL Usually I cook it in a bowl in the microwave, sometimes adding raisins before cooking. Sometimes I add a sprinkle of cinnamon. Occasionally I stir in some applesauce after cooking. Tonight I was eating it uncooked, mixed with wheat germ and some raisins and walnuts, and sweetened slightly with one drop of stevia. Cooked or uncooked, I eat it with soymilk. Actually, oat bran is very much on my mind right now because I have to launder a shirt and shorts that are covered with it. I fell down my porch steps this evening while holding a bowl of cooked oat bran and soymilk, and it got all over me--hair, arms, clothes. What a mess. I don't know how it happened. My DS was right there, and he doesn't know how it happened either. I'm just glad I didn't reinjure my bad knee. Anyway, I didn't get to eat any of it, so that's why I was eating it uncooked a little later....See MoreHIgh cholesterol diet
Comments (22)I had my annual physical at the end of May, and my cholesterol was 299. I immediately cut out all sugar and refined carbs and trans fats. I walked 40 minutes a day. I ate healthy low-carb whole foods like baked or grilled chicken, wild salmon, grass-fed beef maybe once a week, fish, eggs, legumes (primarily red or black beans), LOTS of vegetables (but no potatoes), avocados, and some fruit (mostly berries and apples). Healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil. I never felt deprived or hungry. For snacks, I ate nuts, mostly almonds and walnuts, but also some pecans and pistachios. One of my favorite snacks is apple pieces dipped into almond butter. Homemade kale chips are good, too. For beverages, I stuck to water and lots of it, and tea (green, white or Rooibos). I took a high quality fish oil supplement, not the ones you buy at the grocery store. And for a sweetener, I use "Just Like Sugar." I like it better than Stevia and you definitely want to avoid aspartame. Although after a short while of no sweets, I lost my desire for them and seldom used the Just Like Sugar. After 3 months (and 20 pounds lighter) I had my cholesterol re-checked and it was down to 224. I don't need to lose much more weight, but I'm going to continue on this eating plan because I feel soooo much better. I think the key is to reduce inflammation, I think that is the real culprit to much of what ails us. Good luck to your SO. He's a lucky man to have you helping him and looking out for him!...See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
