Good Morning Zidane, The import of plant material into Canada is currently reglulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's Plant Protection Division (CFIA). I believe a decision was just recently made by the Canadian government to transfer Plant Protection responsibilities back to Agriculture Canada, but I'm not certain when that will happen. Your best plan of attack would be to contact the Oregon Department of Agriculture and tell them what you wish to do. ODA will be the ones who inspect your roses and provide you with the required Phytosanitary Certificate for export to Canada. They will also know what the certification requirents are and what the Phyto must attest to. Once you have things organized with ODA, I would suggest that you contact the CFIA in Vancouver and discuss things with a Program Officer with the Plant Protection Program in that office. When you are ready to move the plants to Canada, you will have to present them and the Phytosanitary Certificate to a Canadian Border Services Officer. They may choose to hold them for inspection by CFIA at the border, or more likely let you move them through for inspection by CFIA at destination. The good news is that no Import Permit is required between Canada and the U.S. I import roses from Oregon and other U.S. nurseries often. The CFIA has an online web system called the "Automated Import Reference System" (AIRS). As with all things scientific regulated by governments, plant import requirements are complex. AIRS allows you to access requirements for specific species and types of plants from various places and determine admissibility and import requirements. I have inputed a search for roses, with soil from Oregon to be imported into British Columbia for planting. The result is pasted below: ______________________________ Recommendations to CBSA/Documentation and Registration Requirements Refer to CFIA-NISC(must be accompanied by the following documents\registrations):•Phytosanitary Certificate Importer / Broker Instructions DOCUMENTATION INSTRUCTIONS PHYTOSANITARY CERTIFICATE - Obtain from Country of Export prior to importation. CONDITIONS OF IMPORT The Phytosanitary Certificate must accompany the shipment. The material must be certified free from Columbia Root Knot Nematode (MELOIDOGYNE CHITWOODI). 1)The phytosanitary certificate must bear one of the following additional declarations: "The material was produced and prepared for export in accordance with the conditions of entry specified in Quarantine Directive 82-01 of February 1, 1982." or "The soil originated in an area in which, on the basis of official surveys, Meloidogyne chitwoodi does not occur." Requirements for European brown garden snail (Cornu aspersum, syn. Helix aspersa): The Phytosanitary Certificate must list the following additional declaration: "The plants in this consignment were inspected and found to be free of European brown garden snail (Helix aspersa/Cornu aspersum)." 1)The material must be certified free from European brown garden snail (HELIX ASPERSA). The phytosanitary certificate must bear one of the following additional declarations: "The soil originated in an area in which, on the basis of official surveys, Helix aspersa does not occur." OR "Material is free of European brown garden snail (HELIX ASPERSA)." 1)Requirements for Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica): The shipment must be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate indicating the state of origin, OR a U.S. Nursery Certification Program Phytosanitary Certificate OR Shipping documents showing a U.S. Greenhouse Certification Program label. A Phytosanitary Certificate is required to accompany the consignment, containing the following Additional Declaration: "This shipment conforms to 7 CFR 301.92 which regulates the movement of nursery stock for Phytophthora ramorum from the States of California, Oregon, and Washington." OR "The soil originated in a production site in which, on the basis of official surveys, Phytophthora ramorum is not known to occur." --------------------------------------------------------- Moving your roses across the border should be relatively stress free, provided you do you homework with ODA and the CFIA. Good luck. Cheers, Rick

its all about whether you have inclinations towards being a felon or not .... lol .... at jaro's link .. interesting its the food inspection agency ... lol ... but it specifically says: Prior approval process and import requirements for plants rooted in approved MEDIA the key to me seems to be the media issue ... i did LEGALLY send hosta to canada .... called the Ag office.. found out hoops to jump ... and the guy came and got them.. and took them to the detroit/windsor border ... its been a long time.. but basically they had to be bare rooted.. NO IMPORTATION OF SOIL.... and then we bleached them.. and then made an inventory with values ... because you know what the government wants ... its darn fees and taxes .... and then the inspector came and jeweler looped every single plant ... like he would ever see anything that time of year ... but we didnt point that out ... he gave us our stickers for the boxes ... and off he went ... now get this ... EVERY time ken came to visit.. he would be hassled coming into the US, and going back ... once because he had a BB cart.. and they accused him of coming over to earn money.. anyway ... the one time we are fully legal .... and he is standing there with his tax wallet open ... what happens.. he shows the border guard the import docs.. and the guy waives him thru ... lol .. apparently the doc was good enough ... the other time i tried .. legally, by mail ... the import police insisted on holding them.. sealed in the box .... for some ungodly 'holding period' ... some failed .. but most made it ... you know.. i have had the same requests you have gotten ... and frankly .... if i insist on legality .. it isnt worth the effort .. i mean really.. what will i do with scion returned in favor [i dont graft, and i cant pay to have it done] ... and even though the stuff is newer ... and unique.. and foreign ... arent you getting to the point that they are bare derivations of each other ... isnt one yellow P.a. just like another ... ??? as an example .. cant you find the same thing here ???? ken

Food pairings are very much subjective, and I object to a whole slew of them. I hate coconut in curries and also abhor most sweet things that find their way into meat dishes - especially fruit. People put all kinds of sweet fruits on ham, and I won't touch it. The absolute worst pizza is ham and pineapple (which I love separately), but there are people who eat it. Certain cuisines have more acceptable (to me) food combinations, such as Italian, Greek, Cajun, Mexican, Sichuan, and Japanese (except for their curry), and others have combinations that I consistently avoid - especially Philippino, and some of its neighbors. Some cuisines have a few dishes that I love and a few that I hate, such as Thai, Indian, Persian, and Jamaican. I will go to those restaurants but be very careful what I order. There are no universal rules about what goes with what because there will be exceptions to every rule and nothing will please everyone. Here are some pairings I do NOT like: nutmeg in spinach cinnamon in curry Waldorf Salad (bad mix all around) and there are a few herbs/spices that I just don't care for, such as tarragon and star anise, although I can handle them in minute amounts. I love cilantro, however, and many people hate that. Once I was on the Fillmore bus in San Francisco, and I happened to start talking with the woman sitting next to me and told her that I had just made my grandmother a lavender silk blouse for her birthday. The woman said to me, "That's perfect! Lavender goes with everything!" and I tried to imagine what this woman's wardrobe looked like. Lars

I've mailed home smoked salmon, wild rice, artisan cheese and home made bbq sauce down (Not all at the same time) and have received hot sauce, Moon pies, various dried chilies, various seasonings and spices back. All declared on the little sticker that goes on the package and all got where it was going, both ways with no dealing with customs. One time a shipment of hot sauce had one bottle break and it was returned to sender as hazardous waste! I was somewhat concerned about the smoked salmon and cheese packages but they all made it. Multiple times.
