Do any of you use an electric roasting pan?

I mean to cook your turkey in?? I'm thinking about investing in one but not sure which brand. I know Nesco is popular. DSis used one last year for the first time and is completely sold on them. She borrowed one. It's a GE. She also said the turkey got browned, but I didn't think they did.

Any advice?

I have two big ones and do like them, one a Nesco and one I think is a Rival. They both have inserts yu can put in them to keep foods warm while serving. I have not used them in a few years but did use them a lot in the past. I liked them at the time.

I have a GE Roaster and have not had to do the turkey in awhile. This year I am having Thanksgiving here. I have been looking online for instructions on how to use it. Unfortunately. I cannot find my instruction book. If anyone uses a roaster, could you please give some hints?

I saw an all stainless square one without the dreaded non-stick at,of all places, Home Depot tonite. It was a brand I never heard of but seemed well built and sturdier than the aluminum teflon coated ones. All our Walmarts only have the non-stick ones. Target is supposed to carry a round one by West Bend but I've never seen one off line.

I always use a rack for chicken if the cooking temperatures are moderate. For sticky chicken I don't use one nor for high heat chicken which I rarely do because I would grill instead. I have several roasting racks and use them all for different things. The rack I use most often for chicken resembles a toaster oven rack and works fine, stores easily and goes in the dishwasher. I like broiling pans because the fat stays covered - v racks for even browning and turkeys, and small racks to fit inside a 13 x 9 pan. Roasting pans w/racks of all sizes can be found quite cheaply around the holidays so if you want to buy one, I would wait until November. You could get one for under $10 them. I see new broiling pans at Good Will all the time too. I don't like to use vegetables as a rack because I'm cheap!

Hi mistihayes, A roast can be cooked in another type of pan in the oven, though I don't think I would use a cake pan - they are thin compared to roasting pans. You could use another type of metal pan OR a glass/Pyrex dish (grease/spray it liberally with shortening or cooking spray,) OR an enamel over cast-iron, OR a cast iron pot OR even a disposable aluminum pan from the grocery store. A Dutch oven is very versatile & is useful for many cooking techniques such as stewing, slow cooking, & even roasting. It's worth the purchase. What type of electric roaster do you have? From what I have read, most are able to handle any type of roasting. I have the impression that they are comparable to "regular" ovens. Yes, I agree - this form is wonderful. I'm doing a brunch for 12 people on the 28th & am relying pretty much on the recipes I have found here. Kathleen

Do you use a roasting bag for your turkey?

I used the bags for the last 3 turkeys I cooked.They work great! Turkey is really moist and juicy and so much easier clean up.Just don't overcook.Bought the bags today to cook 2 turkey breasts.I cut an onion in quarters and stuck it in the bag with the turkey then season as usual.

Yes and I love it. I will be using it for the turkey in Oklahoma and for the Brisket in Louisiana. I also have the server top that you can put 3 side dishes in and keep them warm. Mine is a GE 18 qt model in white. I got if for Christmas from my sister I think she got it at Walmart.

The oven works great and you can set it outside or in another room and not use up that valuable kitchen space. I use it outside on a table when we use the RV. I don't have a lot of kitchen space and the oven in there is small.

I have used mine to cook my turkeys and hams and all sorts of stuff. You can make a big gumbo in one.
And it is perfect if you are having a bbq, put all the meat in there on low and keep it nice and warm.
The inner pan comes out so it is easy to keep clean. When I am warming meat I just wrap it in foil and put in the inner pan.

I just set the temperature like your recipe says and bake it for about as long. Sweet potatoes and things like that do well too. I usually put my turkey in a roasting pan with foil on top and bake it in the roaster. I guess you could use a baking bag, I don't recall if I ever did or not. Makes for an easier clean up.

A Turkey, Chicken, Cornish Hen, or Duck MUST have an ultra-crispy skin to be edible. (The best part). Does a Roaster do that, or just cook it?

I wouldn't be able to do Thanksgiving for 22 people without mine. I think mine is a Kenmore, and it is true it does not get as brown as in the oven. However, I bought my Mom a different brand (I can't remember which) and her's browns very well. I really don't mind though. because the turkey comes out really moist and it frees up my oven for all the sides.

Yes it does brown.
For the manual just Google the brand and model number of it and the word manual you will be able to find one usually on the manufacturer website.

I use an electric roasting pan, a least once a month to cook a turkey. I use a cooking bag. The turkey doesn't get brown unless parts are overcooked, but it cooks faster or seems to than in my oven. I always put mine outside to cook so I don't have the smell of turkey lingering in the air for a day or so after cooking it

OldFixer--that's why I asked. I have to have that crispy skin. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting I can't eat solid foods. I'm sure going to try though!!! If I can't eat it, I'll freeze it and crisp it up when I'm able to. LOL!

I will tell you how I do mine and it is always a nice browned juicy beautiful turkey.
I rub a light coating of French's yellow mustard all over the bird and inside the cavity, then sprinkle on a generous amount of Worcestershire sauce over the breast, then I sprinkle with a nice dusting of Tonys seasoning, then I spray very lightly olive oil spray over it. That combination will always make a beautiful bird and the flavor is amazing. You will not taste the mustard but it really enhances the flavor. Now I don't slather it on just use my bbq brush and paint it on. Another thing that makes it even browner is to add a little kitchen bouquet to the mustard.
I have used the brown in bags in the roaster but it tends to make it really fall apart and you just can't get it out complete. It is good and juicy and very tender, and if you don't mind if it comes apart then you can use them. They end up stuck to the bottom of the bag.

I have never had anyone even know it was cooked in the roaster unless I told them.
You can always take it out and stick it in the oven under the broiler for about two minutes to get it crispy but don't burn it!
