Opened a email account, there is was. A printed receipt from Schwans for what I bought and the amount and when driver was due next. So I called to find out how they got my email address. Could not tell me but said I must have ordered on line (I did not) or filled out some slip (never did). And it is a email I don't use much. I really don't want that much information on the internet, yes they want to save paper, now I know why I was not given receipts at delivery, but driver never said NOTHING!. Anyone else receive emails like this????

No. DH does have an account on line with them, tho. I have always met them at the door on delivery. Got my receipt then.

Yes Im getting emails from people I have done business with that I didnt give email to but Im getting emails.

Hi, Here's a list of what to keep from Clark Howard's website. He's a no nonsense all around money guy. His radio show and website are filled with valuable info on what papers to keep, as well as many other money issues. This doesn't cover receipts in general, but is a great help for that other related stuff. There are probably ideas for receipts too if you do a search there. As far as receipts for everyday purchases, if I think it may be needed later, I take a fat Sharpie pen and write what the item is in large print on the receipt so it's easily read, and just put wherever my current papers are piled or filed. Receipts for large purchases are with the other info on the item, in a ziploc bag, taped to the item. If it's a kitchen appliance, it's taped on the back. Water heater is right on front, along with a business card from my plumber. Furniture receipts can be stapled to the bottom of most pieces. There are lots of good tips on this thread. If receipts are being saved in case of fire or other disaster, remember that with the stuff also goes the receipts. I would add to make sure you have everything important, especially pictures, backed up away from your home. Computers make that very easy now, even though it can be time consuming. I bought supplies in advance, as well as fresh items closer to the date. Well, not everything got used. So, that very next day, I packed up what was left (unopened hot dogs, frozen burger patties, fresh buns for both, etc., etc.,) and drove to a Christian Summer Camp. They accepted everything for their campers. I had a list of what I donated, and went and pulled the receipts... and we able to take a non-cash tax donation for the full value of the goods donated. Fairly often, and if I find an undercharge, or too much change, I call it to their attention. Several years ago, when the scanners came in rather than the sticker with the price on each item, there was a bunker with frozen fish on sale, with a placard showing the price per pound over the bunker. When I checked the price on the item, the amount per pound was different/higher. I called it to an employee's attention, he said that the price on the placard was when it had been on sale, the day before. I told him that I should get the advertised price, he said that the sale price was no longer available, I insisted ... he ended up agreeing and so marked my package. I walked around the store for ten minutes or a quarter hour, returned to the fish bunker ... and the sale price placard was still up. I asked for the store manager, called the situation to his attention and told him of my suspicion that there was duplicity afoot. That we used to have the price on each item that was going through the register, so could check. As it is these days, we almost need to write down the price on the shelf for each item, to check with the receipt. I don't often find errors on the receipt ... and I do find that the line item for sale goods usually lists the reg. price, then the amount of saving on the discount below it. ole joyful

Really?? How could they have your email address if you didn't give it to them at some time or another?

My email address for all online ordering bears no relationship to my name, address, state or anything else that could be searched.

I've never had this sort of issue, and I've been shopping on-line for many years.

I always opt out of the "sharing of your address" with other companies, but if Marie has an actual printed receipt for something purchased, well, how else would they know unless you gave them the email address at some point?

I have never given out this email address to anyone, and really don't get much email ads, but I did find out something. All you do is do a email address search, pay a bit and everything shows up, when you put in the persons name and address. I still am going to follow this up.

I have sat and listened to both my DBs talk about how easy it is to track down some ones email address if you know their name. And I Private Investigation show I watch about tracking down families often uses Email searches to find their targets. l.marie

Most of the time you've given it to them whether you realize it or not. Memories fade, but databanks don't. And considering the wealth of information out there via facebook, myspace and other "give away data" sites, it's not difficult to find people who don't care about privacy or security.

I have two email accounts, one (ATT) I give out to friends and businesses I trust, the other (Yahoo, free) for anything I order on line. I rarely look at the second one, only to see if there's anything unusual. I just delte everything every tw--four weeks.

Just yesterday, I received my receipt from Schwan and I, like you, was surprised....But, I probably had done some searching on their site at one time and figure that's how they got my address....This was the 1st time I charged my delivery and was kind of surprised by the $1.00 delivery charge....
We love their food and I have the fellow come only once a month and even then it's too much for the 2 of us....They do have some really good stuff.....

I use several yahoo email addresses ...

... and the main one that I usually use as a screener, that folks get until I figure that I can trust 'em, is "junkmailsystems@yahoo.ca".
