Reward Points--good or bad or????

Just got thru opening part of my mail and it seems like every one wants you to join their rewards programs. Please check all the fine print first. One, wants only 25.00 per year LOL, another will give you 50,000 points after you spend 400.00 at the hotels but only for the next 3 months. In figuring out my rewards cards and I do not have many, you really have to have a gazillion points to get anything worth while!!!!
I know some are good, but lately either the companies are getting desperate, or getting sneaker.

lol..got mine on the atm card before they said no more, and still haven't turned them in...but to get points when you'd never go to a hotel, except at certain times, is a waste of money... you could buy a blender cheaper, lol...

I've had an Amazon Visa card since 2005, and get reward points I can spend on Amazon. It's a good deal for me because I shop there a lot anyway. The number of points earned varies. I know I get extra points for shopping on Amazon and also for buying gas.

I'm so sorry for your tsuris, Harmony! Having dealt with precisely what you describe off and on since 1989, I felt the pain you expressed. I believe you were correct in just letting the roses recover on their own with copious water. In many cases, water really is the best "fertilizer", "fungicide" and "insecticide". As long as the plants can be kept sufficiently hydrated, their will to live is amazing! Nature truly has provided them with everything they need to survive, if given half a chance. In this climate, I have found mounding soil over the bud union after replanting from a gopher attack, as you would a new bare root, has helped greatly in preventing the plant from drying out as quickly. It apparently also helps keep it cooler and darker, which are the conditions conducive to root formation rather than top growth. As long as you pay attention, catch the problem before the plant is too far gone and keep it wet, most can be salvaged. But, it is a bear and definitely NOT fun. Congratulations on your successful recovery! I know it wasn't the way you wanted to make the decision, but at least the whole situation worked to help you cull those roses which really didn't speak to you. A whole lot of 'living beyond your means' and 'I want it NOW' with a decent dose of gaming the system. 'No docs' loans originated with large down payments. When you walk in with 50%+ equity in cash, lenders dis not need to look that hard. Extending the same privileges to 10% or 20% down customers is ASKING to get ripped off. 'Interest only loans' started in a similar way. Purchasers had large performing investments, and did not want to liquidate them and tie money up in a house. When you are making upwards of 15% on your money, paying down an 8% loan with that money is just foolish. If your yield starts to fall it is time to move some funds around. It is not a method to let you purchase a house you otherwise cannot afford, assuming it will increase in value and you will get out from under the debt before it crushes you. Here is some BIG news. RE does NOT always increase in value. Items completely beyond your control can cause the value to actually DECREASE. Those with a solid financial base weather the storm. The others go looking to get someone else to pay for their losses.

Thank you all for your suggestions. However, it unfortunately seems that here in Europe these cards are limited. I only found two cash back cards that pay money, one I'm not eligible for as you need a very large monthly spend for it to pay out (no point spending more to save), and the other is from a company I simply don't like. Other cards were linked to expensive or non-local shops I don't shop at. However, I discovered that the supermarket I almost always shop at offers a card that allows you to collect club card points anywhere you use it, which relate to 1% off everything, and double points in the store that issues it. I already spend around Â£1200 a year in this shop for many food and household items, so I will be able to indirectly turn all the points I collect in to real money savings. You can also turn the points in to vouchers of higher value, but they're for various products I wouldn't normally buy, so I'll just use them to save on things I do buy. If anyone is considering one of these cards, I'd suggest checking out your usual shops to see if any of them offer credit cards with rewards. Being able to use the rewards in shops you can easily get to and consider good value for money is worth far more than collecting seemingly huge rewards for shops you don't like, can't easily get to, and potentially are more expensive, thus reducing the value of the rewards.

Next thing you know we will be shipping them our old laptops and tablets lol The primates have gone high tech! I have seen stories online about how much they enjoyed looking at pictures on tablets and video. Maybe they need a big screen. I have left newer magazines and paper back books in hospital waiting rooms, especially in the icu areas. I know when we were almost living in the icu waiting room when my dad was there we really appreciated finding donated books we could read and take with us. I use an amazon card too, for the same reasons, Susan. Makes some of my purchases cheaper!

We use cards that give us 5% cash back on gas, 3% on dining and travel. Better than air miles for us.

I charge everything on a cash back card--I get 1-1/2% on everything, except for 3% on groceries and 4-1/2% on gas. It really adds up. Plus, there is no service charge for the card, and since I pay it in full every month, I don't pay any interest at all.

I have one card through my bank that has points which is great, I just cashed mine in, just had the money added to my savings account, it was over $700.
My one other card is only used online and to pay one auto pay bill, it also has points which I can cash or get in various ways. I will always just get the cash. All good since I was having to use the card anyway so getting anything back is a big bonus.
The only other type reward card is the grocery store, I get great gas discounts and they have added a senior discount to it too. Save a few dollars on their specials too.

I retired 8 years ago. On my job, I traveled extensively and often. I still have some rewards left on several cards.
Still use credit cards instead of carrying a lot of cash...pay them off every month, and the points are a bonus.

I get rewards poinst from Staples for things I buy and for turning in empty ink cartridges, then Staples mails me certificates for certain dollar amounts I can spend on my next purchases.

I get rewards points for using my Discover card, but they won't send me any money which to me isn't fair.

Like Wanda we have a cash-back card with larger points for gas and grocery and smaller for everything else. Pay off each month and get cash back too.
