'Not In Front of The Servants'....

"A True Portrait of English Upstairs/Downstairs Life" by Frank Dawes.

After watching the entire BBC Series Upstairs/Downstairs for the second time, my interest in this period of social history was renewed; so I sought out some books on "life in service". Just finished the above title awhile ago and found it very interesting, there were some photos as well. I got to thinking - anyone here have memories or stories of grandparents or great grandparents, other family members, in service in the early 1900's - 1918 or even up to the 1930s that have been passed down, to share?

I have one elderly friend, now in a nursing home, whose Uncle John was a chauffeur to the Seiberling family in Akron in the 1920s and 30s. She showed me his photo, in uniform beside the family car, one time. Since then all her things have been dispersed or done away with by her children(!). She often speaks of that photo, how I wish I knew where it was without causing a family hoo-haw. None of my business that's for sure.
