Hi Kat! I'm obviously not Moni, but I'm going to assume that's the Astoria, OR bridge...located in our (hopefully) future home of Oregon. We drove over it a few years ago and I remember thinking that there is something almost magical about the Oregon / Washington coastline. Much more beautiful than over here in CA (IMO), although we do have some stunning coastlines, too. Lucky you to be able to see that everyday! Well... Maybe not the truck tipping over, just the beauty and ruggedness of the area. :)

Hi Kat

All I can say, nothing bothered me, while I was riding across. I was so sick... and needed to be in a bed. It is a very long bridge, with a nasty uphill just before you get to Astoria.

George, Jerreth certainly is having a challenging week. It sounds like the power might make it back on before you get home. What wonderful friends y'all have.....loaning Jerreth the RV with its' generator. I'm glad Jerreth is going to be able to save the frozen food. And, putting the refrigerated food in the 5-gallon buckets was a brilliant idea. That's a long way to haul water. So, I guess the two of them are building some serious muscle tissue.....and they don't even have to drive to "the gym" to do it. I know that you are doing terrific work at the Bible Institute and you are fortunate to have a spouse who shares your faith and supports your efforts. It can't be fun to be the one who is "home alone" at this time of year with the risk of ice storms, and I admire her so much for being willing to do it. You said that this is one of the "prices" which you wish y'all didn't have to pay, and I understand that, but we don't really get to choose the price we pay or the challenges we face. I know that Jerreth will come through this challenging period just fine and I suspect she won't even "rub it in" too much that you were off in sunny Mexico doing the work of the Lord while she was here dealing with the mixed blessing of having frozen moisture fall. Look at it this way: The good news, George, is that while you are away in Mexico, all your trees got watered. The bad news is that they got iced too. I hope the rest of your trip is successful and productive and the conditions at "the home place" improve soon. Dawn

Paula, I can't believe you had to go to work in this mess. Well, yes I can, because it is the FAA after all. You be careful out driving in this and especially walking on the parking lots and sidewalks! So many people are falling and breaking bones and stuff. Tracy, I'm just across the river from Gainesville and while I-35 is a mess, Gainesville itself is basically fine. As far as I know, their power has remained on more or less and they only had 3-4" of snow. Some people on the Texas side of the Red River have had minor rolling blackouts where the power is out for about 15 minutes at a time about once every couple of hours, but I think that all occurred yesterday and not today, and I don't even know if the affected area included Gainesville. I know it included a lot of the D-FW metroplex. DH drives through Gainesville on his way to work and thought Gainesville seemed fine once you get away from the low-lying river valley area along the highway where all the traffic problems are occurring. If you want to see the Gainesville news, you can go to KXII.com or visit the webpage of the Gainesville newspaper, which I've linked below. Most of the "bad news" (other than travelers rolling over on or sliding off of I-35) locally seems to be coming more from the Sherman and Denison area than from the Ardmore, Marietta, and Gainesville area, if that is any consolation. Maybe your friends are down in Fort Worth for the Stock Show? I'm sorry to hear the cold has hit your plants so hard. It doesn't seem fair that the cold would hit y'all that hard after you already had to endure all the summer heat. Hang in there and when your DH finishes his degree, y'all can move back here where the weather is more normal. Well, OK, not exactly normal, but you know what I mean. Like A Bridge Over Troubled Water

Sorry Folks: I wish I can say that I have designed a new revolutionary form of dry creek bed, but unfortunately, this one is in the "work in process" stage. There will be a mix of gravel and rocks eventually with a transition, left to right, of tropical to desert plants. The dry stream is the low point of slopes to either side, so as the microsprayers water the plants above, the runoff will take care of the plants I plan to put at creekside. The plants I'm envisioning are riparian in their native habitat, so they can handle a drenching and go weeks with out water. These include things like papyrus, palm grass, heliconias in the rain forest, and more water tolerant succulents on the desert side. The two sides will be on two valves so one side will go a minimum of a month between waterings, while the rainforest will get sprayed a little over once a week. The area where the bridge is goes through a transition zone where I've planted things that are happy either way, like Dypsis decaryi Triangle Palm, bird of paradise Strelitzia reginae and sun loving bromeliads, like Aechmea sp. Hope that clears up the mystery creek. spectre

Hi Susie, thinking of you and your family as you grieve for the loss of dear Wendy. I'm so sorry for the pain I know you are all feeling. I do believe she is waiting in peace, and pain free, with all of our other beloved pets. Hang in there and know that thoughts for peace and comfort are being sent your way from all over the country. BeeOhio - is that a hotel? If so, which one if you don't mind me asking? The view is awesome and we've been thinking about taking another road trip...

When I saw the title I was thinking Astoria, Queens, near where I grew up. Then I remembered Astoria doesn't have its own bridge. LOL

That certainly looks nasty, though!

Yes, Shed, it is the Holiday Inn Express & that was our view with the Astoria River Walk right outside the window. We were on our Lewis & Clark journey & Astoria is the area where L&C spent the winter of 1805 before making their return to St Louis, MO. It's a beautiful area.

That Oregon / Washington coastline is sooo beautiful. I fell in love with Astoria. But we retired to central FL because of the grandbabies. And it is beautiful here -- just not as breathtaking.

This is going to sound silly, but I remember watching "The Goonies" as a kid and thinking how cool it would be to live where it was filmed. Years later I saw parts of "Kindergarten Cop", even though I'm no fan of Schwarzenegger, and fell in love with the area. Imagine my surprise when I found a website listing both having been filmed in Astoria! That's when I fell in love with the area and after a few road trips, we have decided that when it's time for us to retire, that's where we'd like to move.

We'll definitely have to stay at that Holiday Inn, Bee. Thanks for the tip!!

I loved the WHOLE coastline... as far as we rode along it. It was one of my best cycling tours so far.
