Update on My Mom

Since you all have been consistent in your wishes and prayers, I thought it was time for an update.

She's still in ICU, and apparently, soon as there's a bed available, she'll be put in a private room.

She's off the respirator as of yesterday and has the little oxygen nostril thingy, off and on throughout the day. Her breathing is good. She has some moisture, or a rattle in her lungs though that she never had before. They keep asking her if she smokes (no) or if she has asthma (no) or if she uses a puffer (no). She might end up by using a puffer though if this continues.

The only complaint is that she's parched, so thirsty.

She's not allowed to drink, can only have a sponge/swab on a stick. I keep putting it in her mouth and she's in heaven, to be able to suck on it.

Her sense of humour is there, in full force; so "she's back."

She keeps saying how well-fed Wally is (has gotten a lasagna, pot of chili and I'm having him over tonite for roast beef) and she can't even have a glass of water! He'll be gaining weight and all she wants is (sing) cool, clear, waater.

LOL

*** What is truly remarkable about Mom's recovery is the surgeon told us there's an 80% mortality rate. Thanks to YOU, my KT friends, and to mom's tenacity; thank God, she is in the 20% minority.

She has had 2 stints put in her heart and both legs and this time they did the one in her liver and it has made a huge difference. She is at home now and still has normal blood pressure. They gave her a prescription for half the strenght she was taking in case it goes back up but so far so good. She is sore but in good spirits. I will be making plans to go down there when the weather warms up and we can go to some flea markets and book stores. She likes to read. My uncle is still being weaned off the ventilator but is stable and getting a little better. That is a big relief to my Mom since he is too far away from her to go see in her condition. Thanks for all the well wishes. I am glad everything is working out so I don't have to stress so much.

So Hubby did indeed make it home (though late). We spent a good deal of yesterday cleaning and organizing but we still have a lot to do. With the chaos our life has been for the past several months cleaning (other than the basics) has been a very low priority. CT scan revealed that the mass in her shoulder is non-homogenous, there is definitely infection and the other parts could be abscess, live tumor and/or dead tumor cells. Plan is to do a CT-guided needle biopsy of all the different masses today. She should also get her stomach tube. The battles raging in her body have taken a toll on her in many ways. Probably the most difficult one right now is that she is easily confused and agitated and has no short-term memory. We have to explain to her multiple times where she is and why she's there and what is happening. They put her on oxygen last night (she has developed apnea and shallow breathing due in large part to the meds) and you could see it was really helping her but she kept wanting to take the cannula off. Hubby is at the hospital now hoping to catch up with the oncologist. I suspect he's going to be gone all day. We're still nowhere near ready. Adding to the stress, we came home some time after 11 pm (having spent the evening at the hospital) to discover the newly-vacuumed living room full of garbage and three very dirty and guily chihuahuas. My fault - I had left the (nearly full) garbage can where they could get at it. With a ham bone and other tasties in there it was just too tempting. So we spent our evening scrubbing floors and puppies. At least we hadn't shampooed the carpet yet.

They often say that death is peaceful, but the journey certainly isn't. I am sorry to be morbid but I feel for you. It reminds me of what I went through when my husband was ill. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

You have to love her sense of humor. I don't know if I could be that civil. We need to give thanks to the doctors, too. Bless them!!! I bet you're breathing a sigh of relief, jasdip. So are we.

Looks like she's a tough old bird, it seems.

A touch of humour, and an optimistic outlook, and mainly trusting that things will turn out well are a lot of help.

I got shivers reading this - a feeling of happiness.

Please let her know we continue to pray for all of you. My prayers continue. I hope my shivers meant my thoughts are getting through.

All the signs were positive. Nice to see they were right! Thanks for the update and best wishes to you, your Mom and Wally's full belly! Sounds like I should stop by and keep him company for a while. :)

I know the annoyance when you're dehydrated and want something to drink but they won't give it to you! Finally they gave me some ice chips. Little did they realize the sink was within reach of the IV, the monitors and stuff - the cords and tubes would reach for some DIY ice water.

They definitely won't give her ice chips Cynic, in case one goes down the wrong way and gets stuck in her lung. Then it's back to square one.

OJ, I've never posted her name, but what the heck.....
Gotta tell you this story about my ex-hubs. He had a sense of humour as well.

At the time, my cat of 14 yrs died. Mom wanted to give us something in memory of her. She was going to give us money to plant a tree, but we didn't have room for another one.

I didn't think I'd get another cat, after losing Peanut, but it was lonely without one. We saw one in the paper, and mom gave us the $50 for it, if we liked him.

One the way home, with the cat and his belongings, we didn't like his name, and wanted to re-name him.

DH said "Let's call him after your Mom." I said You want to call the cat NORMA??!. He said.....Noooo, Biddy; after
"The Old Biddy." LOLOL
Mom thought that was hilarious, and Biddy was Biddy till he died this year.

JASDIP...I am thrilled that your Mom is doing so much better!! I hope she can soon have a glass of nice cool water! (worries the crap outta me thinking about her being so thirsty). My Prayers will continue! Give her another Alabama hug from me!*S*

What good news to read! Your mom must be a tough cookie. That is a very cute story, btw. Getting out of the icu is such a good feeling, I'm sure. Best of luck on a quick recovery.
