Grandma Bonnie (& others), I started on those aprons

The ones made from men's shirts Bonnie linked to in this thread.....

I decided to make them for my daughter and her family: husband and three girls (12, 13, and 21). They love to grill and entertain, and I'm sure they'll have fun wearing them at least once.

At the Salvation Army I bought four men's shirts in cute green and yellow plaids, and two more in a narrow red and white and navy and white stripe. They cost $2.50 apiece, which represents my total outlay. I'm going to use the navy/white stripe to make a pocket for the red/white one, and maybe the ties as well. I'll mix and match the other ones for pockets and/or ties. I've been busy cutting the backs and sleeves off while I stream TV shows on my computer.

Thanks again for the idea! Unless the outcome is a lot different from what I envision, I'll post a pic or two when they're finished.

I took out some shirts yesterday as I was searching for fabric in the same closet.. My husband as a Ga-zillion dress shirts from his work days and he will never wear them again. I have a few in our regular closet that he wears on our cruises and to funerals and weddings...haha anyway I thought I might make a couple too.

Well the only "brand" of plants available around here is Bonnie's Plants as they are the biggest plant grower/supplier in the south. Otherwise you have to buy your plants from a local grower who sells at the farmer's market or one of the few local nurseries who grow their own. So when it comes to plant brands there are few choices. Varieties of tomato plants is also somewhat limited as the growers usually only grow the common varieties or what was a big seller the previous year or years. So any unusual varieties or heirloom varieties will be hard to find as plants. That's why so many now grow from seed. Around here you can almost always find Beefsteak, Juliet, Sweet Million Cherry, Bradley, Better Boy, Big Boy, Celebrity, Early Girl, Patio, Lemon Boy, Arkansas Travelers, maybe Jet Star, Rutgers, a few Brandywine, and a few selected others. Of those, the only ones I would be personally interested in growing are the AR Travelers, Brandywine, Rutgers, and Jet Star. But many others seem to like Early Girl, Celebrity and Better Boy because they sure sell alot of those plants. Dave

I think that pillowcase apron (link provided by dlm2000)could be easily made. Some of the fancy aprons that jazmynsmom likes could be made by buying a dress pattern that was similar and just modifying it a bit, maybe? Grammy Britt always wore the ones that tied around the middle but had a bib. She didn't like straps on the bib, though, so she'd cut them off in a way that didn't show and pin the top two corners of the bib onto her dress front with little safety pins. She had a set for each apron, and when she took the apron off she'd attach the pins to the apron so they'd be handy the next time she used it. I remember sometimes she'd be working in the kitchen and have something on her hands and Gramps would walk in and give one of the apron strings a yank and leave her standing there with her apron just hanging. He thought it was a funny prank. I'd run up behind her and put my arms around her waist and feel for the ends of the strings so I could tie them back for her. She was such a precious little woman. She died of cancer when I was 15. I have an apron that my grandson made for me in Family Living class. I'm going to start wearing it. I've enjoyed everyone's posts. --Ilene

Apron sink/granite owners -$450 for apron sink cutout?

I'm wanting to do an apron sink also. I've gotten 2 quotes so far, one for $400 and the other for $250-300. We're in the DFW area. I was surprised at the $400 quote. Still waiting to get a quote from the lower priced guy for building me a range hood and for installing a drawer microwave in a cabinet. If those prices are reasonable, I'll go with him.

Blue Apron, Plated, Hello Fresh or other meal service?

We just started Blue Apron. We have done a few weeks now. What I find is that it plans the meal for me, a big plus. Does the grocery shopping and sends fresh ready to cook ingredients (like ripe avocado, we don't find those in the store), very nice. The recipes haven't always been home runs for my tastes, the only down side. I love to cook, but finding the time to plan out an entire meal, shop for it, prep and live our busy lives hasn't been happening. I view this as an easy way to get 3 home cooked meals on the table a week without having to do too much other work. It has also exposed us to new foods which I like. For instance Lingonberry jam was part of a recipe the other week. I'd never heard of it, but it was yummy and worked perfectly with the dish it was paired with. A side note, we have been ordering 2 meals for 2 adults and 2 kids, if I throw in a bag of veggies it feeds us all without leftovers. We are going to try 4 meals in an upcoming week. You can only order in increments of 2, so I'm not sure if your daughter wants leftovers of everything once she is back to school.

That's a great touch, Ruthie!

I would have loved to use one of my husband's shirts for my daughter's apron, but I don't have any. He had almost no dress shirts, working in his home office. One of his plaid or chamois shirts would have worked, but the nursing home royally screwed up his possessions, giving me mostly someone else's. They were never able to figure out what happened to my DH's clothes.
