Brain meltdown; can't select a stitch program

I just set up my Bernina 230PE again hoping to do some actual sewing this winter. I am drawing a total blank on selecting stitch programs.

My machine has the 1-0 buttons for the first 10 stitches, but I am trying to use the button sew-on foot; I need to set the machine for Stitch 13.

Does anyone here use these models? Could you refresh my memory on how to select Stitch 13?

I feel like a fool but just pushing the 1 and 3 buttons doesn't work. I searched on line but the examples I found blythly said "select Stitch X" without showing how to select it.

Looks like a sophisticated machine! Where's your manual, Caroline? ;-)

I forget how to operate my sewing machine if I go too long between projects, so the manual is always at my side. If you don't have yours, you can probably find a downloadable one online.

I had a conversation about chicken intelligence with a coworker who had worked in a commercial broiler operation one winter while he was in college. As a consequence, he won't eat chicken and hates the idea of having to deal with them. He made the comment about their stupidity and I replied that chickens are very good at being chickens, not humans. I'm one of those who believe that they aren't stupid because we don't understand them but that we as a species aren't smart enough to understand the "lesser" animals. I have 4 pullets that I bought from the feed store for an Australorp hen to brood for me. She was a wonderful mother until the day she decided she was finished with mothering and went back to laying eggs. She refused to let the pullets go to the feeders and the fifth chick died before I figured out what the problem was. This hen has been broody for me several times so I may have another chance with her before the season is over. I used to have two roos, one a purebred Australorp and the other a New Hampshire Red/Australorp cross whose feathers were black with some red and orange on the wings. I named him Sunrise and he was my companion and protector when the purebred Australorp tried to attack me. Unfortunately, Sunrise died prematurely and it was necessary to dispose of the nasty rooster because his aggression wasn't limited to me. I was spreading some mulch this morning and my New Hampshire pet hen came to help me. Actually, she was looking for bugs, grubs and worms but the former broody wouldn't come anywhere near me. I raised the NH but the Australorp was given to me by a friend last spring. The NH is the best fly control program you could ever hope for and still lays at 6 years old.

Dan, Your block will be in the mail on Monday. Everybody thanks for your conserns but I'm fine. Just been gardening when it doesn't rain, cutting & splitting wood, and quilting. I have 4 quilts to go to Colorado, 3 are all done and one for my new baby to be done. It's going to be very simple. A rag type with animals appliqued to the blocks and a beautiful puppy print for the back. Someone gave me a big box full of quilting magazines so I been looking through them to pass onto someone else. Quiltmaker is the name. The mosquitos are so bad here they can carry you away as soon as you step out the door. Black flys were yesterday. To do anything you need jackets and gloves and my bee hat. But I can't complain, with all the other disasters going on, we are lucky. Have a great day everyone!!! Sharon gmom

Lynn, Are you using 'Windows XP', 'Vista', or some other operating system? You mentioned 'Superantispyware' removing "several spywares". Have you also run a full scan with your 'anti-virus' program? If not, update and run a full scan. Something else I overlooked when I read your initial post, I see you're using AOL 9.1. I'm still using AOL 9.0 SE, so there may be some changes to the way things are done in 9.1 as far as repairing the software. I'm not even sure they have the same features in 9.1 so let's forget about 'rebuilding the AOL adapter' for now. Someone else using that version of AOL will have to jump in here. If you have the 'AOL' icon down in the system tray (by the clock) you can right click that and see what options there are. System Restore is painless and if you don't get the results you want you just 'undo' the restore. If you had any kind of virus or spyware infection and you restore to a time when your machine was infected, yes, it will restore those infections, but you can always run your anti-virus and anti-spyware applications again to remove them. I can't say for certain whether or not 'system restore' will affect your bookmarks but it is always a good idea to back up anything on your computer that you cannot afford to lose or want the hastle of having to replace. There can never be enough said about the importance of backing up important data! I use Acronis True Image which makes an image of the complete hard drive, sector by sector, that will restore everything including operating system, programs, documents, pictures, data, etc. to the 'T'. This is on a second drive in my PC in case my primary drive should fail. I also have an external hard drive where I back up 'My Documents'. "I also ran ccleaner right after the updates (I thought at first that that was the problem) - should I rerun that as well?" No, running CCleaner again is not going to fix the problem, nor do I see where CCleaner would have created your problem, unless by chance, if you also used the 'Registry' feature in CCleaner, it may have removed something. Anytime you use any kind of registry cleaner it should have the option of making a backup in case things go wrong, which is exactly why most cleaners, some don't, have the backup option. Either that or create a 'system restore' point before you use it. Using a 'registry cleaner' is a hot topic. Some swear by them, others swear at them! I personally have use Macecraft 'Reg Supreme' for years with no ill effects. "There may have been an easier way to do this, but I just copied and pasted all the bookmarks I made_____". There is: Internet Explorer has an 'import/export' feature for transferring or backing up your cookies and favorites. Click on 'File' in the Menu bar at the top of the IE browser, select 'Import/Export', and follow the Wizard. You can save them to a file on your computer for retrieval later if you should need to do so using the same wizard. I made a folder called 'Backups' in the 'My Documents' folder where I store a copy of my 'cookies' and 'favorites'. In Firefox, I'm still using version 2.0.0.16, if you go to 'Bookmarks' in the Menu bar and select 'Organize bookmarks' and click on 'File', you'll find an 'Import' and 'Export' wizard. Drink some 'brave' juice and try the system restore first to see if that works. Witz

"It's erratic, and it's more likely to work if you upload FIRST and then write about the picture. For me, it's not at all erratic. I've tried all sorts of permutations and nothing works. And, before now, I NEVER had a problem. I sent an email to HOUZZ and they asked me to clear my history, cache and cookies. I use CCleaner and will periodically clear all that, usually leaving cookies like Houzz and yahoo for example. So, this time when I used CCleaner, I made a point of asking that the Houzz and Gardenweb cookies be deleted. (Houzz does not make it easy to log back in, but I finally figured that out.) They asked my browser. Google Chrome. Nothing changed. Same problem. What's somewhat interesting is that I can upload to my "Ideabook" at Houzz, then click the "Houzz Photo" link and will be offered the chance to select from pictures in my "Ideabook". I've taken pictures in the winter through my bedroom window as the birds come for the food scraps I throw out for them. I was big into peas at the time. Hay

I'm sitting here with egg on my face!

I have several Bernina books and two of the "Feetures" books, none of which had "how to select a stitch program" info. I guess it's so basic they didn't think anyone needed to be told.

After reading your response, I finally found the little User's Manual (where it belongs) in the pocket of the machine's cover. It had the proper Step-by-Step-for-Dummies info!

I was not pressing the "#" button, (lower left of the key pad) before pressing "1" and "3".

Alisande, I love this little Bernie. I've had it for eight or nine years. It was a surprise gift from DH. It was considered one of their simple "entry" models at the time, but obviously, LOL, it's more machine than I'll ever conquer. It does everything except the supper dishes.

Over the years, and thanks to a deeply discounted "going out of business" sale, I've collected so many of the wonderful presser feet and accessories. This machine will outlast me, and the next two people that inherit it.

Just for laughs I dropped by a large Bernina dealer in Fargo last summer. They had a new sewing/embroidery/computerized monstrosity that cost more than a perfectly usable car. I was in shock. It was very grand and glorious...but I'd never work my way around it.

I have my original 1975 Singer Fashion Mate 252, (bought as a floor model) and a 1950s Pfaff 130 (from FreeCycle). The Singer has been limping along for decades, but it will still crank out an acceptable seam if I baby it along. The Pfaff is a workhorse, and the Bernina is my Lady of the Sewing Room.

I've linked to my machine's manual if you want to check it out. The 230PE is now discontinued and replaced by far more complicated models. I'm glad I got mine when I did.

Denny bought me a new maching last Christmas....I can't say I like it yet (I hate change) and I like the old standard maching with a zig zag and maybe a stretch stitch

But I have found the stitches to be simple on it.
It is a computer machine and all the stitches are printed on the front of the machine alone with the number of the stitch. you just click in the number of the stitch and it is ready to go.

My problem....I have to get the book out every time I need to thread a new color. I forget it everytime.

I seriously would love to have my other machine back. It was only a couple years old....but when he bought me the new one I let my daughter have the other one.
I would trade her but I don't want to hurt his feelings...he was so proud of buying that maching for me...and I can get along with it.

Glad you found it, Caroline. I changed sewing machines a few years ago, and it sounds similar to yours, Patti. I loved my old Kenmore, which was the top of their line when my DH bought for me (a whopping $400 in 1975), but I don't have a dedicated place to sew, and the Kenmore gained weight over the years and became too heavy for me to cart up and down the stairs. (I don't know how a sewing machine can gain weight, but I know I couldn't possibly have gotten weaker. haha) My newer Brother is much lighter.
