There's nothing like a beautiful book.

My immediate family have Kindles, and chances are they'll buy me one someday. I look forward to it, because the portability and ease of reading, etc., appeal to me. But I hope we'll always have books.

I went book shopping yesterday, taking care of several children on my Christmas list. I hope they'll like their books as much as I do. Visually, the books are as impressive as the information contained therein. I also bought few cookbooks for adults on my list. Although I admit I'm more likely to Google a recipe than open one of the cookbooks in my collection, new cookbooks still tempt me. The photographs, the layouts, the fonts, all combine to create an irresistible package. There's no comparison to the cut and dried, multiple recipes to a page look of cookbooks from the 1960s, for instance.

And I bought a gorgeous British book called Dad's Book for my son. Subtitled "Old-Fashioned Fun For the Family, it even feels wonderful in the hand.

I wonder when books will become a rarity. Probably not in my lifetime, but you never know.
