I got a book called "its perfectly normal" when my son was nine or ten...it really cute - there's a cartoon bird and bee making comments throughout the book (one says "that's gross" and the other tell him its normal) I just left it for him to read when he was ready. Luckily I found it very easy to talk to my kids about bodies, sex, etc so in return they found it rather easy to ask me questions (car rides are great for that!) At sixteen we can talk pretty openly and both my kids know they can talk to me about anything.

I think my daughter was about two years old when we had "the talk". I found a little book that explained things simply and added it to the stacks of books that I read to her.
There wasn't ever a time that she didn't know. Because if you wait very late, some other kid will inform yours, and I made sure she heard it from me.

Shouldn't "the talk" be quite protracted ...

... starting when they're very small ... and continuing throughout life??

Rather than making a "big deal" of it, shouldn't we deal with it, like ordinary things, a bit at a time, as part of the ordinary business of living? Part of the natural, undramatic order of things, no?

My kids have been given information and appropriate and slang terminology all along. They've seen graphic births on tv and know how the babies come out. My oldest ds watches the science channels all the time. He's seen parts about fertilization, etc. I've never really had a reason to explain more than that. Now is the time to give him further information so I am. I'm using the book in addition to what I'm going to tell him.

I did like Marilyn C and others. We talked from toddler-hood about our bodies and what they do.

When I was pregnant with DS I explained to almost 2 DD in simple terms how the baby got there using the "seed" terminology. She didn't ask about how it would get out but if she had I would have told her.

DS had no problems talking to me either. Even as a preteen he asked me to check out a rash because "dad isn't comfortable with that stuff" LOL.

All that so called "sex ed" paid off. instead of jumping into relationships both kids took it slow and had respect for both themselves and their partners.

Not the answer to the OP but hopefully will help those with little ones who are "waiting" for the right time. It's now.

With pornography so readily available on the internet, phones, EVERYWHERE it is a good idea to talk to your children about sex, and to make the conversation continuous and open. Otherwise kids get a pretty interesting point of view as far as what sex is and should be.
