When did they colorize it???

While channel surfing this morning, I came across the movie, War of The Worlds. It is the original one and in color. I remember it being in black & white and it scaring the heck out of me. Other old scary movies I remember are, the Blob, and The Thing. I saw the remake of War of The World and it wasn't good at all. Any good scary movies you remember?? Dottie

I always liked the original Shining. The remake stunk.
A lot of older movies look kind of silly now don't they? Remember The Blob??

LOL I "let" my granddaughter watch "The Blob" one time (for about fifteen minutes!) She told me that she'd "rather alphabetize the spice drawer!" ROFLMBO

(I was disappointed that she wasn't impressed! LOL)

We've changed our minds about the house colour about 3 times since the build started, and now have it down to two similar shades. Waiting for the stuccoers to do their samples before we make a final decision. I took samples of our roof shingles and window frame to a Benjamin Moore store for their help. Even though we aren't buying paint for the main body of the house we are buying trim & interior paint from them (and have bought masses of testers s far) so they were happy to help. Another important step is to find a paint colour as close to your siding as you can find, buy a tester & paint a board that you can move around & see on different areas & in the different light conditions. If you're brave you can then do like my husband & stop everyone who walks by to ask for their opinion.

I am one of those who think "the hotter water, the better". Growing up my mom boiled most everything, starched all linen,shirts and also ironed EVERYTHING! Socks, towels and undies included! BAck than,there wasn't dryer available to us so we hung things out or on radiators so it had to be ironed. Mom had a "laundry day", which I could not stand and till today I wash as I need. I know back then rinsing took huge amounts of water. My mon would be soaked and exhausted after doing laundry for half a day. We had hand made lacy curtains and those were boiled and starched too and had to be put on the wooden frame to stretch them in proper shape and let them dry stiff. My first washer was twin tub and when first Fl became available, I got one. I don't remember if it had heater (we had boiling water coming in from basement boiler so it was hot)but it did take huge amount of water in and it was very simple compare todays washers. Wash cycles ( I think there were 3 )wasn't as long as today.It did brake too. The electronics had to be fixed couple of times. When sysnthetics came around, my mom fell in love w/them. I think b/c she didn't spend so much time washing it or ironing it but she washed most of those by hand! I remember when first softener made it to the store. Everyone smelled the same- and more smell, the better! Doing laundry 4o years ago was a job but it sure was nice to lay down in crispy starched and nicely ironed linen. On the other exterme, my mother in law did not do laundry at all. She would pack everything once a week, loaded her car a took it to the cleaners. They would wash and dry clean it for her. Even underware. And that's when I learned not to like dry cleaning. The chemical smell was strong and things would be gingy at times but she didn't care.

I was so tired and fed up with collecting color chips from all over I just plowed ahead and painted the whole room what is some sort of 'battleship gray'. RH makes things so easy by offering only 'just the right shades' to choose from. :Sigh: Another color scheme RH does not offer is Orange shades. Yet. I just repainted my central hallway an Orange/Pumpkin/Dreamcicle/Terracotta sort of Orange. It was an Oooops paint from HD for $1. I needed something brighter in the dark, windowless hallway, but still something in a deeper, richer color that would not clash with the rest of the house. Years ago I painted an apartment bathroom gray with white trim and white fixtures. Loved it. Miss it.

I am enjoying these stories. I'm another who grew up vacationing at the Jersey shore. It was a magical place so many years ago, now it is too crowded. We would spend a month in Ocean City NJ. We spent the days on the beach and most evenings on the boardwalk. A real treat was the one night each summer when we went to Wildwood to go to the boardwalk and ride the rides. Later we switched to Stone Harbor, NJ. We would also go to visit my parents' families in a little town in upstate PA and that was so much fun. There was a dairy farm nearby and we hung out there all the time. Every summer there was a carnival and we always went to that. That little town holds such great memories for me. We stopped taking vacations when my parents built a big house with a swimming pool. It was so boring. It was too far away from anything to get there on bike or foot. I just remember being bored to death all summer. As soon as I was old enough to get away on my own, I went right back to the beach and got a job working on the boardwalk. What fun! Later we took the kids to Ocean City every summer.

Dottie, this is really funny because I asked my movie buff friend the exact same thing about War of The Worlds. He said, "It's always been in color". I argued, but then went online to research it and sure enough it WAS filmed in color. We must be thinking back to when we were kids and just had b/w TV. I don't know, but it's been on TV since for decades. I just never noticed it before. Maybe it's been restored.

The remake I like better than the first was Anna and the King, I thought was wonderful. The original was far to dramatic for me to take it seriously. I also liked Sense and Sensibility.

I was never really a big fan of scary movies. Although I do like the old Frankenstein and Dracula movies A favorite movie of mine, even to this day is Arsenic and Old Lace. They colorized it a while back and it just didn't seem the same. Partly perhaps because the colors looked so fake but it just wasn't the movie I liked. I have since seen it again in the B&W version. I had taped it in color but would turn the color off on my TV when I'd watch it. It just wasn't like climbing into the time machine and going back to the B&W days.

Only one movie has bothered me, it was "Five". It was about a bomb that killed people, but didn't damage buildings and about 5 survivors. I thought of that movie every time I heard a siren for years after. It was probably made during the cold war. I recently saw it on TV.

"Them". I love that movie! It doesn't scare me now like it did when I was a child, but it's still just fine, with a young and stalwart James Arness as the star. Actually, the ants are the stars.

I remember running home thru the streets and alleys after watching the Blob one Friday night! I was scared to death!!
Another really frightening one was Last House on the Left....the remakes just don't live up to them! I guess the innocence of childhood made them all so scary, today real life is scary enough!

I loved all three Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
And Them was a favorite, too.
Did anyone every watch The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?

Wow! Schoolhouse, goes to show now well my memory is failing me. LOL I didn't remember WOTW being in color. I have seen most of the movies mentioned, and they sure scared me. Dottie

Oh Dotmom, I'm so glad you posted this. War of the Worlds scared me so much when I saw it as a child (the original one, of course). I remember lying in bed thinking there was something in the closet. I remember from the movie some kind of triangle thing with lights sticking up--horrifying! When the newer version came out, I could not see it.

When I hear of some of the movies children see these days, I know they must be scared too. Some parents just don't realize how powerful and frightening some movies can be. My son was even scared by the witch in Wizard of Oz.

Guess I'm rambling off topic...sorry.

The Tingler always scared the crap out of me. Honorable mention to the Brain That Wouldn't Die and The Mummy. A few others that had me peeking through my fingers were Magic, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, Psycho, and Games. I won't be able to sleep tonight, LOL!

Actually, my most frightening movie is still The Exorcist. My elder DS, who is a real movie maven, agrees with me that this movie gets scarier each time you see it. So I don't watch it any more.

The original The Thing left me cold. The remake, though, is Fright City.

OK, I got my courage up and watched when War of the Worlds was on TV last week, the new version. That is a very scary movie, especially when they are in the basement and when they are captured by the aliens.

I am with Shea, What ever happened to baby Jane is one of the scariest movies, that and One flew over the cookoo's nest. The second took me 3 days to watch because I could only stand to watch it in 15 minute increments.

My husband (age 63) was a child when War of the Worlds came out. His family lived in Queens NY. He walked to the movie theater alone and paid to go in. The clerk took his money but warned him it was a scary movie. He was 6 years old. He remembers it being in color, the one with Gene Barry. The later version, Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, is still pretty scary.

I remember foing to see the original Thing hen it first came out as we walked by the theate to the front we could hear all the scream!!
