Question about Chair seat covers...

I am recovering the seats of our counter stools.

I found a fabric of the perfect color and it has a nap that rustles up when you brush it in one direction.

Which direstion works best?

Is it better to have it going flat as you slide off, or as you slide onto the stool?

The fabric is made with what looks like irregularities in it even though it is a solid color.

Do you like the shading difference facing one way or the other when looking at the chair face on?
My inclination would be to have the nap "rustle up" facing towards you, the feeling of smoothness when brushed from back to front.

Much to my surprise, it looks about the same either way.

While waiting for ideas about this, I just laid the fabric over the seat and have been sitting on it.

It seems that if the nap flattens forward, then when I sit down and slide back a little it makes a crease that I end up sitting on.

If the nap is laying toward the back, then when I sit down it pushes into it's natural direction. The "drag" of the nap is better when getting off the stool, because I am no longer sitting on it.

I have a rocking chair where the bottom of it broke the pegs out of the legs gave out and the bow snapped off one side of the chair. Can this be repaired? Without taking the entire bottom legs and bow off?

I have a beautiful new Nichols & Stone dining table in my kitchen with 4 matching chairs. I need six chairs and I'm thinking about recovering two parsons chairs that I already have for 'host and hostess' seating. I have a couple of questions: 1. should I reupholster the chairs or have a custom-fitted slipcover made? 2. the chairs are currently upholstered in a floral - will I see the floral legs peeking out from under either option? 3. the current floral upholstery is threadbare on the seat - is this an issue with either option and if so, how do I correct it? I borrowed that pink chair from where I'd posted it in the Cottage thread in the Gallery. I've been having fun over there. I thought you'd get a kick out of it! It's cute as can be and twice as gutsy. Your room is shaping up just great. I love the cozy feel. Formal is lovely but can look un-touchable sometimes, you know? Everyone loves a good kick-back casual room, especially if it's pretty. Reno ~~ I really do like the shape of these chairs better than the other chair you asked about. These are more graceful. If they're comfy, I say go for it. You could re-cover them a kazillion ways so they should always find a place in some room or another. They will probably work just fine in there as they are. Just toss a red pillow on them and drape a throw over one. You can always re-do them later if you want. Go for it! Rhonda ~~ I love your chair! I've spent a lot of time all over your blog and you are SOOO talented. Your home is just gorgeous. It's the perfect combination of elegant and casual. It's a real art to put that together the way you have. You're an inspiration and I wish you'd post a lot more of your pictures here. I don't think that is an antique; it's a repro. I have a similar one, true antique, that I got on CL and upholstered in linen, but I don't sit in it often. It's fine for the few times I do. In 'my' CL, I have seen people call things from the 1980's antiques. I'd ask the seller more about that chair, if it being an antique or not means a lot to you.

I was waiting to see, how this one turns out.

Judy, I would be the rebel, and put the fabric with the nap sideways. Not even that alone, how about on one chair you make it face one direction and on the other, LOL, of course face it the other direction.

I vote for a fabric without a nap!LOL Think about it,whichever way you put it,it will never lay flat or smooth.Been there done that! If it doesn't bug you then any old way will do.LOL I do know that any chairs I have seen in furniture stores with seats done in fabric with a nap,the nap smooths down from back to front.Similar to making a garment with a fabric that has a nap,it is always done with the nap going down,or should be.My mother was a seamstress and she taught me that!LOL

While waiting .......Hours .... for you KTers to wakeup, I tryed placeing it sidways and that way drags depending on which way you get on the stool.

I'm trying to avoid a BUTT print here------- sure I could just not sit on it! LOL

Lilliepad, LOL in my mind the "down" direction of a chair would be going toward the back.
I remember the torture of learning how to deal with naps and plaids in sewing.

So far having the nap pushing toward the back seems to be w/o problems.
