How do you type a 'degree' sign?

I've always used....alt 0176....but it doesn't work anymore for me. It jumps me back to my home page.

Is there a different way?

I use Alt 504. Try that.

It's sunny and 48° here in NE Texas this morning. :-)

Not that I know of, I use the same numbers as you did and it works. Vique

How long do cuttings take to show signs of rooting

    Q

    Comments (6)
Hi KellieB, Welcome to the board! I've rooted less than 10 cuttings since the beginning of this summer (so I'm still a bit of a newbie myself), but I think I've seen growth within a month on each of those. I had a couple not root, and saw shriveling and softening of the original cutting. I think the key word I've learned so far is PATIENCE. I know it's probably the last thing you want to hear, but it will pay off. No promises since we're so near season end, but if you're in an area that still has some warm weather who knows? :) Are you using a rooting hormone? I've tried the powders, but seem to have better luck with a Dyna-Grow Rooting Gel. Try the link to Kimi's in Corona (they ship now!) if you want to snag some, or try eBay or other places online. Good luck with your cuttings, let us know how they progress! --Mark Here is a link that might be useful: Kimi's

    Test degree sign

I'll try anything - but I have a notebook running Windows. Current temp 31°. Okay, I see finally what I was doing wrong. Can hold down Alt key with the sequence 0176 as was suggested by someone... but using the right hand number pad as opposed to the running numbers above "qwerty..." Always glad to learn something new. Now to see if the cent works 99¢ Three new features learned today - how to imbed pictures in a post plus the two above. It's pretty nice when people around the forums share their expertise.

Hold down the alt key and at while doing that type in 0176 °

Or go to your clipboard and copy and paste it.

how weird! I copied and pasted what I wrote from my clipboard and it worked. But I did what you did and it took me to my home page like yours did. Weird............. (singing the theme song to Twilight Zone) do do do do do do do......

I tried both the ways you've suggested and they don't work for me either...I just flash back to home page.

    So where is a clipboard?

Patti, is your number lock on? Make sure it's on and try it again.

I tried both numbers and nothing happened EXCEPT now my tool bar has disappeared and only reappears when I put the cursor up there. HELP! How do I 'splain this one Lucy?

You have to use the "&" sign and the "#" sign before 0176. It works and you won't jump around. So it would be &.#.0.1.7.6. without the periods.

    Try this °

I've always used Alt-0186 for the degree symbol. I don't press any other keys before or after. I just type along, press alt, then use my number key pad to type 0186, and when I let off the alt key, the symbol appears º.

I'm not going to try 0176!

    °They all work for me...

Waaa Haaaaa....snort...that was a good one.

Learn something new every day! I will have to try it.

60 now and 84 high today.

None of those work for me. Maybe it is Vista's fault.
    Clare

I don't have Vista, but try holding down the Alt key and typing 137 on your keypad. (It doesn't work on the regular number keys across the top of the keyboard.)

I always wondered how you all did that. It's 41 degrees here, none of the above works for me, all I get is a nasty splashing water sound.

I just did a search and found this:

"Alt (holding it down) + 0186 is the correct ASCII code. What may be causing some confusion is that the numerals should be typed using the num-pad keys over to the right of most keyboards, not the regular numeral keys near the top of standard keyboards. As long as the Num Lock is on and you are using the numbers on the Number pad."

    Try again.
60º now and 84º high today

It worked!!! Hurray! Using the key pad on the right side of the keyboard was the trick. I was using the numbers up above the keyboard.

That was a good question Patti. I know it has been explained here in the past but I could never remember it. I just wrote it down, now I'll have to remember where I wrote when I need it.lol
    It is 39º here.
    Tanks everyone.

Works for me....its 40º here today and STILL raining. We had such a dry summer but, we've had 2.5 inches of rain over the last couple of days with snow flurries possible this afternoon....really a good day for a pot of homemade soup.....

I just use the * above the 8 and it gets the point across. It's 41* here right now.

The method I posted used the qwerty and not the num pad.

It is what typists use. They don't switch over to the num pad for symbols they just keep on typing with hands in place hovering and no pauses.

    °

    Both work for me.

Yet another option is the HTML version and works on the forum. & deg ; without spaces will give you the ° symbol.

On a laptop without the keypad the keypad is integrated in the regular keys, so try using the Fn key with Alt then use the numbers on the keys (MJUL would give you 0176 IIRC - I'm not on one without a keypad right now.

The html works fine. Cynic, what is the Fn key?

DH got my tool bar back, now I'm afraid to try it again. Oh well, he can find it again if I screw it up again.

    0176 just being a smartie

maryanntx, Fn is the abbreviation used on most, it's the "function" key. Sometimes it will say different names. Sometimes it will have red lettering on it rather than white as a reminder that it activates the additional functions on the keys with the red marks on them. On my old Toshiba it was between the Ctrl and the Alt keys (and the Winkey was up in the top row for some reason. On my new Toshiba it's between the Ctrl and Winkey. Remember this is on laptop/notebook keyboards, not on a "standard" 104/106/108 or whatever # of keys keyboard used with desktops.

I do it like Dilly Dally suggested and it works for me! Yeah!

It is 61° in Las Vegas right now!

Here's one way to do it. Its hokey, but it will work.

Open MicroSoft Word. On the top bar, click "insert", and then choose "Symbols...". A table of special characters should appear. Highlight the symbol you want and at the bottom of this panel, click on the insert box.

The chosen symbol should now be in the text body of MSWord. Close the insert drop-down; Highlight the symbol in MSWord and press CRl-C (for copy to the clip board). Don't close MSWord, but minimize it instead. It can be brought up again when you want to use this symbol again, OR add another special character to the MSWord text and use it.

Use CTL-V to copy the character from the clip board into your reply text. This special character will remain on the clip board for further use until something else is copied to the clip board, or until the clip board is automatically cleared.

Here is a list of all the "and pound" codes that typists use for things like degree, cents, trademark, fractions, ect.:

    http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm

êzY! Wanna know how to do the blink thing?

    Or do RED??

    Or do it real BIG?

Here is a link that might be useful: All the Codes You Need

Oh, and to make it easy, for a long time I had a Post-It note on my monitor with the codes for the most common ones that I used. First I just stuck up the 'cents' one, since I seemed to use it a lot, then the 'degree' one, then all the ones I use.

Here is the secret to using code on GW for things like     strike     bold     underline     italic     blink     color    Â

Most boards use the [ ] but here at GW you have to use the .

That took me a long time to figure out. I like the [ ] better as since you don't have to always fiddle with the SHIFT key, it's faster.

MaryAnn, on my Dad's laptop, the keypad number are in blue, mixed in with the regular keys, so you would hold down the function key and use the number/letter keys to get numbers into whatever you're typing. To get the degree sign or whatever, I guess you'd hold Function,ALT and then type the number to get the symbol, like Cynic said.

My computer gives me the degree sign by ALT, 167. No zero needed, I found that out by just holding the ALT key and typing in numbers until I got what I wanted, then remembered it. I do that all the time, actually, for other things, too, like the little doo-hickey over the é in my friend André's name. ALT + 130

Thanks Cynic and Flamey. I just noticed that I do have a Fn key and my numbers are in blue like your Dad's Flamey. I think I have it now. :0)

the FN key on your laptop is also used for the brightness and sound volume keys that are over your up down left and right keys...when you hold the FN key down and hit the bright sun a few times it will lighten up your screen...or viseversa....the same with sound it will work rather than going into your volume contol.

I have always used ALT + 248 °°°° It has worked through all versions of Windows, including Vista. Maybe this one will work for you.
