Will take any advice....

November 1, I woke up with that heavy eyes feeling that a bad head cold was coming on.

Since my immune system is compromised by RA drugs, you can imagine my "O shoot" thoughts.

Well, no cold, but by evening I had eyeballs that looked reddish?

Not having raised any children I didn't know what

Pink Eye looked like - but as the next two days went on, I looked it up, and found my diagnosis.

Called Opthamoligst immediately, went in, and he said a very bad case, but worse is...it's viral, not bacterial(what most kids get), and could last 7-10 days.

In a few days, I also had a raging had cold, coughing, etc. -- went to family doctor who said it was an ordinary rhino virus cold....just have to let it run it's course - Buy some OTC Zirtec and something else to loosen and bring up phlegm? DH runs out and buys it.

Also called Rheumatologist the next week, to cancel scheduled infusion, who suggested since the Pink eye had cleared up, may be a small bacterial infection - prescribed an antibiotic.

Yesterday, the pink eye came back.

Through all this coughing, I have not developed a sore throat or fever, but I have good hours and bad hours, and no real strength. Can't sit stand up too long. No shortness of breath.

I know it's only a cold that my body can't fight...and, being a virus there's no medical "cure".

The only slight blessing is that I have lost almost 15 lbs since the beginning of the month. I'd take them back in a minute.

Hot tea and chicken soup have tried...Any good home remedies?

My doctor recommends "Tincture of Time" when I get a cold. But pinkeye, you really need antibiotic eyedrops. Hope you feel better soon.

When I encounter anything like a cold starting I increase my Vit. C to 2-3000mg about 3 times a day for several days. Decrease it some if you get any side effects like diarrhea.
Has worked for DH and myself for years.

    Engine Rebuild Help & Advice

    Q

    Comments (8)
Thanks for all the feedback. I certainly do appreciate it. It seems the most economical thing to do would be to buy a new engine. But, I do enjoy working on them and I sure hate to see that old cast iron block get retired. So, IÂm going to invest a few $$s in her and call it a hobby. Broke her open last night and hereÂs what I found: - Exhaust valve spring keeper had broken and was not holding the spring and so the valve was floating. - The valves do not pull out of the block, they go as for as where the spring keeper goes on. - The counter weights on the governor had sheared off and were lying loose in the bottom of the block. - Carbon build up on the head and piston. Question: What do I need to do to get the valves out? Thanks, bob

Are There Any Well Behaved Tall Clematis...

    Q

    Comments (8)
Thank you, Babs. Tall for me would be in the 10' to 14' range. I have 2 large arbors I would like to grow taller ones on with Peggy Martin and Isabella Skinner. I doubt either of these roses will reach the top of these arbors so I'm hoping the clematis will carry color to the top. I plant clematis about a foot or so away from the rose because of the aggressive clem roots. They share the same support with the roses. I grow Prince Charles with Jeanne Lajoie on an arbor and, as you said, his blooming period isn't as long as some, but he's very prolific. He would devour Jeanne L if I didn't keep him in bounds. She surprised me by reaching the top before the Prince. I have two more arbors I would like to grow clems on to share space with Eden roses. I bought Betty Corning for one, but have decided she will get too big. I have Louise Rowe, but she's not tall enough. Thank you for the Rooguchi suggestion. I would definitely like to add that one. I'm just not sure the color of his blooms could be seen from a distance.

Don't forget the probiotics - like Activia or an OTC medicine called Floristor. You don't want to deplete the good bacteria in your system.

The only thing I can think of is to take some "Echinacea". It helps with colds & flu's, do a search on it.

    (((((Monica)))))) I'm sorry. I don't have a home
remedy. Grandpa used to give us warm whiskey ! LOL
    HOpe you get better soon

Boy, Monica, that sounds like no fun. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this.

Yesterday I bought something called Oscillococcinum. I've never tried it, but a couple of friends swear by it so firmly that I invested $11 for six doses (on sale at the health food store). It's a homeopathic remedy, and is said to have no side effects, no drug interactions, and is non-drowsy. It's usually taken for flu-like symptoms, so I don't know if yours qualify. The box lists the symptoms as:

    Feeling Run-Down
    Headache
    Body Aches
    Chills
    Fever

Flu is caused by a virus, so maybe this could help. You can decide if you think it's worth a try. In any case, I hope you feel better soon.

I think the best thing is to follow your doctor's advice and just rest.......with the immune def, you need to just take it easy and give your body time to do it's work...just takes longer than usual because of the immune thing.

Monica, did you talk to your rheumy again since the reoccurance? Persistent Pink Eye can be indicative of underlying illness, of which RA is one, so you may want to speak with them again, just in case something is changing.

    From WebMD: Easing Symptoms
To reduce pain and to remove the discharge of bacterial or viral pinkeye, use a cold or warm compress on the eyes. Make sure to use a different washcloth for each eye to prevent spreading any infection. And use clean washcloths each time. Clean the eye from drainage by wiping from the inside to the outside of the eye area. For allergic pinkeye, an antihistamine may be used to alleviate symptoms.

I'm sure you are taking an OTC antihistimine, that, tea and warm liquids are what I would try. I take Mucinex to help things along.

I hope you are on the mend soon, this disease is so challenging.

neti pot. Can't hurt to try

a nasty cold has been going around my work. It takes about 2-3 weeks to clear up.
Never really develops into anything full blown...just makes you feel miserable for a loooong time.

Wow; you sound miserable and I'm sorry for that! Is the weight loss from just a non-existent desire to eat? That is a LOT of weight loss in just 2 1/2 weeks! Have you mentioned that to the doctors you've seen?

I used to get pink eye a lot when I did day care. I didn't even know that there are 2 kinds. I had a prescription eye drop that I saved and used for years.

I hope you are feeling better soon!

There is some kind of homeopathic pink eye drops at the drugstores. The brand is Simalsan or something like that. Try one of those new Theraflu Vapor Patches to help with congestion and cough. I have been sneezing coughing, runny nosr, congestion for 2 weeks now. At least I don't have pink eye too.

No advice, just sympathy. I'm just getting over one of the worst colds I've ever had and oh boy, how miserable it can make you feel. One thing that might be of some help, other than the meds, is frequent naps so your body can regain strength and your eyes can rest. If your cough doesn't keep you awake, that is. Hope you're feeling lots better soon!

I buy a ginger root slice it up boil it with water and drink it all day long with honey~~~if I do it when I first feel a cold coming on it seems to not be so bad~~if I am full on into the cold it just makes me feel better and breathe better

Talk to your pharmiscist. Tell him/her all the meds you take or the Dr suggest.
When we feel like we are coming down with anything, we take a product called Emergen-C. It is a over the counter with 1000mg Vit C + other vit, all listed on the back. It seems to work better that Airbourne with less side effects.
As to nose problems, I like Vicks Sinux, short term, not the 8 hour stuff. Cough--our Dr. still likes the Robitusn products.
Hubby has heart meds, cancer under remission, every three months gets Ritouxin, diabetes and on CPat machine for breathing.
    Hope this helps.
Marie sending you hugs. Do watch homopathic meds as some are great, others do conflict with some meds.
Please excuse spelling errors, lost Google search bar and spell check. At least my computer is up and running for awhile.

Whenever I am stuffed up or coughing, I make myself some broth and simmer green onions, ginger slices, garlic, hot pepper flakes, rosemary and sage.

Strain that all out and add a good dose of black pepper.

It's spicy, and it helps unstuff my nose and ease chest congestion. In a pinch some instant bouillon with a dab of chili-garlic paste helps as well with less fuss.

I also take a cough mixture by grating a knob of ginger and squeezing the juice into a spoon of honey with a bit of lemon juice. Shoot that back and it helps with that "cough tickle".

    Hope you are feeling better!

You need to be careful about using the previously supplied bottle of eye drops, you could re-infect yourself. Be very careful not to let the bottle touch your eye or anything, it might contaminate the bottle...Happened with my son I think, so said Dr also. Throw out the bottle when your finished using it.

    Thanks,
Slooowly sipping shot of whiskey. I'm not a drinker at all.
DH bought those sim-whatever drops, they do help he puts drops in from a distance, never touches eyeball or skin.
GEE - i fotgot ginger...have a big ginger root in the kitchen, will get to it after the shot of whickey is done.

This thing hit me so fast...no time to do any preventative stuff. When your immune system is beaten down, you go down fast and HARD, you're any easy mark. I've always been careful this time of year, around kids especially...no sharing spit, if you know what I mean.

Do they still sell Rock and Rye? That used to be so soothing. The inside of the bottle was coated with sugar, it is great added to tea.

No home remedies, just a cyber hug. It's amazing how miserable the "common cold" can make one feel. I hope you're feeling better soon.

I know that your cold started out as a virus, but with your compromised immune system you have to be careful it doesn't turn in to pneumonia. Happened to me once (I have asthma) and I didn't even know it until I went down. I ended up in the hospital for a week, and off work for 6 weeks--and I was young and otherwise healthy (36 years old). If your chest starts hurting when you breathe, or if you cough up green or rusty sputum get yourself to a doctor for a chest xray.

Hoping you start to feel better soon!

this time of the year we start taking echinechia it has really worked well for us. My doc was the one that had us start doing that, said just start it and take it daily during the months when colds and flu are going around.
take care and get lots of rest!

You probably inadvertently re-infected your eyes, but...

The vessels in the eye are *visible* 'small blood vesssls'. Sometimes when they reveal irritation it's because there's something going on with other small vessels in the body.

This is probably NOT what's happening with you, but a friend with Wegener's Disease has been alerted to a flare-up when her eyes became inflamed. (This is a rare disease, so please don't get excited. It's also something most MD's have never seen.)

Do your MD's think you may require some steroids to quell the eye situation and combat the coughing? I had steroids when I had (bacterial) pneumonia in 2009. (Never felt as weak as I did when recuperating from that. Fell asleep sitting up!) This is an astounding weight loss. What do your doctors say about THAT?

Let's presume it's just annoying pink-eye, and both it and the cold/cough will soon be HISTORY.

Monica, if you suffer from Asthma and have an inhaler, use it. A doctor suggested I do this when I had a lingering cough. It cleared up quickly after I used my inhaler a few times.

    Jodi-

When I had an eye infection that didn't clear up with antibiotics or antivirals I used steroid eyedrops. They worked within days.

    Hope you are better soon!

sounds like the dose that has been ongoing up in this country for months

it affected my eyes as well, altho,I never had anything even closely related to pink eye...my eyes were extremely sensitive for a long time...Buckleys is what ppl here are using,as its the only thing that is working for most..unless it goes bacterial, and into pneumonia...then its mega doses of antibiotics

hot epsom salts baths daily/nightly,lots of Vicks on the throat and chest, use your whiskey as a toddy, take the meds suggested, and IF you do use puffers occasionally, double up on them

Aww Monica, I am sorry to hear you are still unwell.

I can't begin to tell you the number of times I have had pink eye. My Mom used to take a used tea bag and squeeze a few drops of tea from the bag into the corners of my eyes. I still do it when my eyes are dry and itchy.

I hope you feel better soon Monica

What I do when I feel a cold comming on is to drink tonic water which contains quinine. I try to have it on hand because it only works for me if I start drinking it right away.

    Monica,
I have to believe that if you have lost 15 pounds in 19 days that you are eating very little. I know you feel awful, but it might be easier for your body to heal if you can take in more calories. You may need to try ensure or another supplement to get you the nutrition that you need. I hope you feel better soon!

Do you still have infection in your eyes? If so, is it possible to use warm compresses soaked in Epsom salt? I have no idea whether it's alright or not to use this on the eyes--it's my mother's cure-all. My goodness, you've really been knocked low. Hope your doctor is keeping in touch with you and that you're feeling much better very soon.

I'm feeling slightly better this evening, Have tried many of your suggestions...and saw a clue in that my acid stomach is probably the cause of some of the problems. Since this afternoon, I have cut out all carbonated liquids, and cough suppressants that create an acid environment that my stomach just cannot take...and amazingly, the coughing has gone down.

The pink eye is fading, i've been using compresses, mainly cold.

And yes, I am eating more. DH scrambled a couple of eggs, and he even says I sound stronger.

    Thanks, gals.

Well, that's good news! Hope you're getting some good sleep tonight, too.

Monica, I'm so happy to hear that you are starting to see some signs of improvment. You've been knocked down with this for a long time.

One of the wonders of the KT is that we can be reminded of solutions, that we may already know, and it helps us to put our thoughts together for help.

Keep doing what works, and don't give up until it is cleared completely.
    Get well soon!

L-Lysine is a supplement that can be bought at just about any Pharmacy area and says right on it that it is for liver function and to help boost your immunity. Several Dr.s have congratulated my DM for taking it consistently, as it is well documented in Naturalpathic (MD with Homeopathic training) journals for helping control viral infection outbreaks.

She was advised to take it to help guard against shingles. DH takes it to help control "cold-sore" outbreaks. I take it to help guard against respiratory problems, as I have a weak upper-respiratory system. The Nursing Home gives it to DGM to keep her shingles in remission. Take care. l.marie

Severe eye infections can trigger the formation of a "retinal membrane". I have it in both eyes. Look it up on Med MD for more information. This may or may not occur.

After this event has subsided, you should schedule an eye exam by nobody less than an Eye Doctor: a technican will not do. Mention the reason for the exam is that you have had a severe eye infection. In fact, you should call right away to make the appointment and ask when the exam should take place. Sometimes, there is a lengthy delay in getting an appointment.

You should have yearly exams for several years afterward to check for a retinal membrane, or until the doctor advises a longer span between exams.

So sorry you're not well. I too think the dr. needs to know of the large weight loss in such a short time. Have they done blood work on you?
