Who has the best pet names?

They don't have to be your pet, but names you've heard.

I had a cat named Frank and we lost him about 2 years ago to heart failure. When I took in a pregnant stray a few months ago, the first baby born was Beans. Beans was adopted and now I have had Frank and Beans!

I now have a tiny little cat and knew she needed a big name to boost her confidence. She is now Minnie LaRue.

What clever names do you have in mind?

My last dog was named JD. We got her at the Humane society. Someone had brought her in after hours and tied her to the fence. (It was below freezing). there she stayed until they opened in the morning and they say the rope around her neck was so tight, they could hardly cut it off with scissors. JD stood for Jane Doe since no one knew her name. My present dog is Georgy Girl as in the movie and song. She came from Georgia.

My wife and I ordered orchids from Houserman a year and a half ago and we were send orchids that were in very poor condition and not the sizes we ordered.Several were in such bad shape that we immediately contacted them and was told there was nothing they would do.We took all of the orchids putchased from them to the N.C.S.U Lab for testing due to the feat that they could be infected with a virus.I was contacted in a week and told that infact the orchids we delivered to them from Housermans orchids infacted tested positive for virus' and it was recomended that they all be distroyed. We had contacted them first by phone and informed them of the poor condition of the orchids they shipped us along with the fact that the 2 Angracieum Sesquipedial in spike was not shipped as ordered as was not the 3 Vanillia Planifolia or the 5 assorted Neofinetia's we had ordered. That was when we were told there was nothing they would do.After we recieved the information from the lab we contacted them again and again we were told that they were not going to do anything about refunding our money, replacing the plants and that they never shorted shipments therefore we could forget recieving the missing plants from them.We have been growing orchids in my family for 40 years and never had such a problem with a grower or fellow orchidist before and we have contacted them on several occasions since but no replies to our problem. So they have given me no choice but to let everyone know to Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris Perhaps with the word getting our Housermans will start treating customers better. Returning their calls and emails would be one place to start!

Who has a plant with the best story behind it?
Q
Comments (38)
Part one I have a friend whose parents were among the founding members of the botanical society here, her name is Martina and she loves all growing things. Her mother passed away in 1996 and the botanical names of many of the plants she inherited are unknown to her although she grew up with them. Her parents are Austrian and called their plants by their Austrian names, sometimes translating the Austrian to English. When I first met her 4 years ago when she was dating my friend Charles. He brought her over one late afternoon for a visit, she'd brought a staggeringly beautiful plant with her that had been on my want list for a long time. Charles had it with him, he took her to the backyard and came to the door with one of it's flowers in his hand. I couldn't believe it when I saw him standing there, and tried to take the bloom, he was holding it out. He pulled it back and asked me what it was in a kind of challenging way. I thought he knew what it was and was testing me, lol, I said "It's a Gloriosa "Rothschildiana" of course!" Welllll, it wasn't a test, Martina really wanted to know and was such a warm, adorable, lovely person that we bonded almost instantly. Down through the years we've just gotten closer and closer. I love her to pieces. I wish I'd known her mother, she sounds like a rather wonderful humanbeing. I did meet their mutual friend, Nell, who is another wonderful and unique individual. Martina's a hero for introducing us. Her plants are amazing and she is passionate about them, and about life in general. She's 73 years young and can outwork most men I know. She's tough and knowledgeable and compassionate all at the same time. I think the world of this lady. Part two About the same time I met Nell I found Gardenweb and hooked up with a member in Mobile. We hit it off instantly, we had a lot in common and each was doing things that complimented the other. She's so wonderful, I don't know how to tell you how much I think of her. She's beautiful and smart, frank and earnest, honorable and ingenious. Our first meeting was at the botanical gardens' fall sale, we had a great time because we were kind of kept busy answering the questions of the other shoppers there, we didn't get much shopping done, lol. She went back on the last day of the sale, she knew the left-over plants would be marked down. One of the plants that hadn't sold, marked at $8 a gallon, was a bunch of Clivia miniata, it was marked at $2. a gallon. Ginny already had plenty of clivias, including some nice yellows, but she was knowledgeable enough to know that she shouldn't pass up an opportunity like that so she bought a couple to give as gifts, one was for an old friend, the other was for me! I couldn't believe it, I had wanted one for sooooo long, it was such a sweet, thoughtful thing to do and I hope she knows how much she means to me. I've had this clivia ever since, it's such a nice plant, such lovely long, orchid-like foliage. The whole growth...

Who has best customer service?
Q
Comments (28)
Companies I've had great customer service from ... WOLF Answered endless pre-sale questions and post-purchase has also been equally top notch. I actually received a replacement part before I got the notice of its shipping (overnight). GAGGEANU Outstanding. I will preface this by saying it was five years ago, before they more throughly combined with Bosch, and I also think it had a lot to do with the amazing rep I was just lucky enough be directed to. But, having said that, it was absolutely above-and-beyond. MIELE Only had a tiny issue but it was handled quickly, politely and completely. Probably not a coincidence but the three products from the makers above are, at least so far, the ones I've also been the most happy with, performance-wise. Good products + good service = win, win. The Wolf and Miele are relatively recent additions to my kitchen though, to be fair. Now for the absolutely lousy ... WHIRLPOOL (includes KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, etc.) Don't even know their own products. While, in the end, I did eventually get some resolve, it's not been ideal and it's been way, WAAY harder than it should have been. When I think Whirlpool major appliance service, the words that come to mind are: slow, frustrating, expensive and stressful. BLUESTAR Bottom of the barrel. Embarrassingly so. Enough so that I have said, 'Never again' despite a product that is pretty damn impressive WHEN it works. ... That last bit is key. And those that are a more mixed bag ... GE MONOGRAM The opposite of Bluestar, in that the products seem to be pretty poor, but the service I've received pretty darn good. Maybe I've just gotten lucky and dealt with some amazing folks, but I've never felt left out in the cold, despite a HEAP of problems, and the on-site service people are the best I've worked with. Professional, conscientious and well-trained. In the end, we ended up ditching our Monogram ovens in favor of Wolf cause we just couldn't get em working right, BUT they definitely tried. BOSCH Actually, up until the end, the service was pretty poor, perhaps even hostile, and definitely illogical. Refused to do things like directly sending me an easily self-replacable part, but would pay for a contract service person to come out and install it charging me "only" for the $50 part itself when the call, even at their rates, had to be 2-4x that. But they did stand behind their product in the end ... Rather surprisingly so, given my earlier experiences but, gotta give them credit, cause they did eventually take responsibility. We chose to go with Miele upon replacement and, so far, I think it's a far superior product, BUT I also wouldn't rule out Bosch for a future purchase either.

Who has the best prices for Hancock & Moore sofas?
Q
Comments (36)
My store in Alexandria VA ships nationwide on Hancock and Moore, I have customers all over the country including many in Illinois. Send me an email to keepingroom@gmail.com and include the model number, the leather cover you are interested in and your zip code and I will get a quote back to you in less than 24 hours. Some notes on pricing. 1) Be sure you get a dealer that stands behind you after the sale, the lowest price is no good if they ignore your phone calls should there be an issue. 2) Home delivery services cost three times more than delivery to a commercial address (18 wheeler accessible off the back of the truck). If you have the capability to unpack it and transport the last mile to your home you can save quite a bit in that area. 3) There are significant price increase coming in January 2021. Supply chain costs have gone up considerably. 4) Century Furniture (Rock House Brands) owns Hancock and Moore. Century has already implemented collection of Sales Tax into Illinois for that brand, its only a matter of time before you will be paying sales tax on H&M into your state as they consolidate accounting systems, this is likely to happen in 2021 as well, along with all the other Rock House Brand Companies. Currently we are shipping Hancock and Moore without that sales tax added. Duane Collie

Our boxers are Bella and Sasha, and being southern dogs, they have middle names (I know, silly :) ) Bella's is Elizabeth, after DD2, and Sasha's is Marie, after DD3. However, also call them Lucy and Ethel (Bella is the Redhead), they act pretty clutzy some times.

Our old girl's name is Phoenix, after the mythical bird. We found her starving in the woods 13 years ago last month and she was truly reborn from the ashes of her previous existence. The new husky pup's name is Jack. He was 9 months old when we got him and knew his name already, so we didn't want to change it and it suits him well.

We had 3 cats..... Rex, cause DH thought it was funny to give a cat a dog's name.......and it WAS funny, cause this cat turned out to be VERY dog like, played fetch and everything.
Next one was Jazzpurr, just cause I thought it was cute. We called him Jazz.
Third one was Gizmo, cause he looked like the little Mugwai thing.
I miss them still, every day.

I look after a couple of strays outside, I call the one "Bob", cause he doesn't have a tail, but on closer inspection, I think it's a she, oh well, "Bobbie" then.

The other one I call "Cookie" cause he's black and white.

Used to have 3 dachshunds, Squatty (male who squatted when he peed), Spongy (he absorbed all the attention he could get.)
The third was Penny. Actually the 2 boys started out as Davey and Bengie.
My mom suggested the names of the pekes. Sasha was the first, a rescue I had about 6 years, now Caesar, the white/cream coat reminded her of a toga.
All the dogs we've ever owned had people names in the beginning.

Let's see, since childhood here are some of the more memorable pet names.

Mike, a boxer and my first dog. Nothing special about the name really but the dog saved my life when I was under 6mos old. He lived to 16 years old. We named our son Michael in honor of wonder dog Mike (and of course just because we liked the name.)

Patches. Who hasn't named a calico cat Patches. LOL

And Patches daughter, Yahtzee.

Fletcher, a pigeon I rescued after it had been hit by buck shot.

Ebony, a long-haired black cat. Sabrina, a short-haired black cat.

Chinese Water Dragons Thelma and Louise and Siskel and Ebert.

And then there's Schooner who we got as newlyweds and originally named Nooner until we realized how awkward it was to yell at the top of your lungs "Nooner! Nooner! Nooooner!" LOL

Lilly.

Gunther.

But the best name I think was a desert tortoise that I named Fat City. Can't remember how I came of the name but I've always loved the name.

Harry's "official, registered" name is Iacchus vom Drosselbart. That would never do.

His real name is "Harry," or Harry the Perfect, Harry Barry Bellboy (in honor of Sookie Stackhouse's telepathic friend) or Harry Boy.

Deutsch Drahthaars are normally very furry, wired haired, and sport huge, bushy eyebrows, beards, mustaches, and wild, out-of-place tufts of hair sticking out all over their bodies. Think electrified brillo pads on steriods.

About 12 years ago Wes introduced me to the breed, showed me pictures and dogs, and said he was getting one. I had a dream he brought the puppy home tucked inside his jacket, set him on the kitchen floor, and I said "There's my little 'Hairy' man."

I had this dream three times before we finally got the puppy in 2003.

Well, it was ovious that "Hairy" was one of the 10% of smoother-coated Drahthaars, so "Hairy, became "Harry."

The DD pups are named officially by the breeder and each litter has a common initial. The first liter is the "A" litter (Annie, Andy, Amedeaus, etc.) Harry was born in the 9th, or "I" litter, thus "Iacchus..."

(Not the ninth litter for his mother; they are allowed to breed only three times in their lives, but the ninth liter the kennel produced and cared for.)

Wes' dad had wanted to name Wes "Sam" but was over-ruled by Wes' mom. We had no problem picking out Sam's name.
He also answers to...

Sunny Sam
Silly Sam
Sam the Man
Sam the Not, (when referencing Harry the Perfect, LOL!)
Sunbeam Sammy

Sammy Two Balls (tenni balls reference)

Best name I've ever heard was by a good friend of mine who named her (now deceased) dog "Ma Barker". She was a good old dog too.

Most of my pets were named when I got them. I changed the current one. Her name was "Kitty" and no, that wouldn't do. The poor thing was so traumatized when I got her she was doing a number of crazy things. I started referring to her as the crazy cat and "El Loco Gato". After a few weeks I adapted it to Krazee Cat, or KC for short.

Our third Westie was Pip because he was nearly perfect, a prize-winner. Current one is Eliot -- just one 'l' and one 't' because he was so small when we got him from Westie Rescue that I didn't think he could carry more than five letters. We had one female we named Rosie; Westies are also known as Roseneath Terriers.

Cutest Westie names I've heard were a pair of males who were called Ralph and Norton.

Great stories!!

Years ago I had a cat I called "Daffodil". She was brown, so I have no idea why I named her that. My neighbour would call her Burdock.

When I had to put my 14 year old cat down when I was still married to my ex-DH, my Mom wanted to plant a tree in honour of Peanut, but we already had a large maple, and no room for another tree.

We saw a cat for sale in the paper, and Mom insisted on paying for him. On the way home, I asked hubby what we should call him. He said, How about we name him after your Mom?
I said "You want to call him Norma??!?. He said NOOO, Biddy, for "The Old Biddy!" He was Biddy till he died, and Mom thought that was hilarious.

I love these tails....ahhh tales. Our current cat is Buster. The gal we got him from called him Oreo. Buster is a big yellow & white marmalade tabby with circles or whirls on his sides. I don't know where she got Oreo. We once took in a kitten and called her Ellen, but from her actions and personality, she ended being called, Little Fart all of her life. Our wolf/german shepherd was called cheyanne.

Latest dog is Jetty which quickly morphed into Jetty Spaghetti. And sometimes Jet-ski.

Sage is not an unusual dog name. I named her with an S because we had Sam (named for Sammy Sosa) at the time.

The horses are Belle and Banjo. Belle came already named.

Banjo was named after a friends horse that I thought was just wonderful and after I named the colt she told me just how awful her Banjo was.

Since there are 4 horses (two are mine) in the field. I now yell "come on pigs" when it's time for food.

I am inheriting mom's cat named Chesney (after Kenny). He is still in her house and will be until spring. He should have been named Evil.

Tucker, aka Tuckeroo; Ajax, aka Jaxie, and Raia, apparently an African (?) word for "friend". They are all Boston Terriers. Raia is my daughter's dog, Tucky and Jax are ours. Tucker was a sort of a rescue; his other family called him "Bum". Their child couldn't say "Bud". Our vet agreed that Tucker was a bit more dignified than Bum *LOL*

A few years ago, we had "Radar" who was named after Radar O'Reilly on MASH because our Radar would carry a teddy bear around everywhere. When we lost Radar, we prayed that he would send us a good replacement and the very next day, we were asked to care for a boxer puppy. We took her in and named her "Akaia" which means "Sent to heal". She's been an amazing dog. Now we added a Jack Russell-Yorkie mix to the bunch who was adopted several times and returned to the shelter and was about to be euthanized. We took him in and named him, "Loki" who is known to be a Norse god of Mischief. It fits him perfectly, as he is a stinker but we love him and he's here to stay.

He also is known now as The Big Guy or Bruiser.

My baby boy is missing a back leg...the name Lucky just stuck. But he has the most nicknames of all....Scooter, Bubba, Bubby, Punkin', Wooter...he knows when I am talking to him.

One Spring, a friend got an Irish setter and named her April May. My daughter always named our pets. We had a poodle she named Spiro Agnew, but later changed it to Spooky. Then we had a husky-spitz she named Rachael and a hamster around the same time was named Jamie. Oh, Diana, he is. He's been the absolute best companion for all these years. When my husband became ill with pancreatic cancer and for two weeks before he passed away, this baby had to be forced to leave his side. He didn't want to eat or drink or anything. It was so sad to watch. Even today, if Harley sees a white pickup truck, he stops what he's doing and looks, just in case it's 'Daddy'.

Jas, his mama was a Springer Spaniel (thus, the floppy ears) and his daddy was a Border Collie (thus, his coloring). The owner bred these two breeds on purpose) - both breeds have wonderful personalities and are very easy to train. The litter consisted of 5 females and 1 male, all adopted before they were born! We took him from his mama when he was 6 weeks old and 6 pounds. At his younger age, he weighed 75+ pounds, but with his advanced age, he now weighs about 60 pounds.

We might need to rename Jack, the husky pup, Spud. He just came through the dog door from the back yard carrying an unopened 5 lb. bag of potatoes. He must have taken them out of the bowl on the counter and outside while we were at work. He is getting too tall and can reach everything. BTW, today is his birthday -- he's now a 1year old!
