Would anyone like to do a card shower for my Grandpa?

My Grandpa is so down lately. He's been so sad since my Grandma passed away 6 years ago this Christmas. And lately he seems worse than ever. My mom thinks it's a combination of he's turning 88 on November 19th, plus his neighbor is dying of cancer and she is only in her 60's, plus he has over the last few months gotten vertigo very badly and despite taking antivert every day he still has dizzy spells all day long and is having trouble walking. He called yesterday and was so upset because he can't take care of the leaves in his yard this year by his self (riding the tractor makes his vertigo worse.)

I asked my mom if she thought it would brighten his spirits to receive some funny birthday cards from all over, and she said she thought he would get a kick out of that.

If anyone would like to send a cheery birthday card for my Grandpa's 88th birthday, please email me. His birthday is November 19th.

snookums - I do lean towards the warmer white and the ORB hardware, just like the finishes in your pictures (love those pulls!). That's a great example of white cabinets blending well with the copper and natural wood details. I just posted on my other post on Home Dec that if I paint my current cabinets I would use SW Antique White, which matches all my trim, and I think that's pretty close to what you've shown. Of course, the style of my cabinets aren't as beautiful as all the ones in these pictures, but it could make a big difference! Thank you, rosie. Those are my wood floors, although I have slate tile in the kitchen (shown below). I really like that too and it will stay if I paint my current cabinets, but will be replaced if I do a larger-scale remodel. I'm not sure if I would bring the soft pine floors into the kitchen or choose another tile floor. We've done several improvements - replaced all the electrical, drywall, ceiling, paint, new wood slider and crown/baseboard, and installed the recessed lighting and pendants, but everything else is from the PO. I've since replaced those terribly uncomfortable metal barstools with Pottery Barn wood stools. We're shopping for a stainless steel counter-depth refrigerator right now and I'd like to switch out all the appliances, because I know having mixed finishes is going to bother me. I also wouldn't want black appliances if I paint the cabinets white. There's a lot of wasted space on the other side of the room that I would like to expand into with a stand alone island and more cabinetry if we do a larger-scale remodel. You said your daughter has had 'all the tests and nothing unusual has come up.' Do you know if blood work was done as well? My 24 year old niece has had several seizures, and after ruling out Epilepsy or a brain tumor, they discovered she sometimes has extremely low blood sugar. She now eats little bits throughout the day, rather than 3 main meals and has not had a seizure in about 5 years. Hopefully they will solve your DD's episodes and I wish her well.

Thank you for your response, kay and jo. Jo, I'm hoping you are talking about Royal Standard. Because, for the purpose of keeping any sanity I may have left, at some point I have to draw a line and stop going back and forth back and forth on MY hosts ID's. Thanks in part to this thread, a week ago I didn't have name to my Plantagineas. Now I do. I've noticed my neighbor has some P, another garden I was in this week has some P; they are the same color - light green. Maybe they all come up light green and turn darker under complete shade! Mine, under various locations and conditions always remain light green. I might have a couple of RS. They are darker green but seem to have smaller leaves than what I think RS should have. I'll have to do further investigation on those. Maybe next year!!! I'm happy I Identified my Undulatas this past week, as well. Yeah, Ken's scale was very nice, very informative. What are the odds I 'll find this thread come August? But I do still have one hosta in various locations that I don't know what it is (and driving me kind of nuts) that I'm quite sure many of the people on this forum would know immediately! Someone asked me this week what that is ( I have many of my hostas name tag staked) and had to respond with "I don't know - maybe a Sagicrabbyass") If I had to take a stab at it I'd call it a Frances Williams.

Gifts are good to give out to others due to they can be used for shopping at stores for only they can know and buy what they like. Grocery gift cards are a good one too, in fact if grandparents are doing the cooking all the time for these expensive meals, I see them here and that is a huge cost for them, help them by giving them gift cards for those and not break their budget or go without after its all over, food has become hugely expensive and hard to buy at times. Gas gift cards for those driving cars. Restaurants, book stores, there are such a variety of gift cards that can be bought and what they like and can choose what they like themselves. But think of ones you are giving gift cards and will they use them as all many not like them or not go out and about to use them. I caught this show where they were talking about gift cards and one loves them so much for everything from going to movies, to food, to gas, to shopping all those things to do. Another said she has a huge pile of them and hates them, feels they are a unthought gift. Another said she likes to actually open up a gift given. I tried that with my brother and sil years ago as I couldn't afford their expensive taste so thought I would give card where they shopped back then and they hated them said that is an unthought gift. There are many that are hard to buy for and you give up then as they aren't happy with anything. I would love to have something like grocery gift card, bookstore gift card, for me those are useful and great gifts to have but I have no one to give anything like that to me except if I do it to myself. Tammy, you or your mom might want to give your grandfather's doctor a call about the dizziness. You would not want him to take a fall.

wonder if he should see a ent doc? sis had the same problem with meds not working..

it turned out to be an inner ear problem, and once they drained the natural fluid that controls your balance, it went away..downside was loss of hearing in that one ear..but she was able to walk and drive with no problem...

Thank you everyone! I've emailed everyone above and replied to the emails that were sent to me.

Socks and Susan, thank you for the suggestions. Fortunately, and unfortunately, because of his age and all the ongoing issues he has, he sees all his doctors very frequently, so they are aware of his dizziness problems. Poor guy, he just has so many things going on.
