May be cliche, but "Imagine" by John Lennon.

On a funnier note, "Uneasy Rider" by the Charlie Daniels Band.

    MARTINA MCBRIDE LYRICS

    "Anyway"

You can spend your whole life buildin'
    Somethin' from nothin'
One storm can come and blow it all away
    Build it anyway

    You can chase a dream
That seems so out of reach
And you know it might not ever come your way
    Dream it anyway

    [chorus:]
God is great, but sometimes life ain't good
When I pray it doesn't always turn out like I think it should
    But I do it anyway
    I do it anyway

This world's gone crazy and it's hard to believe
That tomorrow will be better than today
    Believe it anyway
You can love someone with all your heart
    For all the right reasons
And in a moment they can choose to walk away
    love 'em anyway

    [chorus]

You can pour your soul out singing
    A song you believe in
That tomorrow theyll forget you ever sang
    Sing it anyway
    Yeah, sing it anyway
    I sing, I dream, I love
    Anyway
    yeah

Laughing here because so many songs of the sixties and seventies had really, really silly lyrics and blew clean off the charts. Sometimes even the words were incomprehensible. I guess we are just accustomed to Stevie's songs actually saying something? I have always adored Stevie, remember his very first songs and they called him "Little" Stevie Wonder? I think the first one I remember was Shake and Fingerpop. OK, does this make sense. LOLOL.

Song lyrics that inspire your garden....

WEll of course there's the song by David Mallet song "Inch by inch, row by row - gonna make this garden grow - all it takes is a rake and a hoe and a bit of fertile ground." . . . But, I also make up my own songs while I am out in the garden. Here's one I wrote last year after finding deer tracks everywhere. A Song to Sing While Working in the Garden Stay out of my garden you mangey ole deer Your presence is definitely not wanted here I see your footprints in the early morning light So I know you visited my garden last nite. YouÂve been biting my beans and chompin my corn Your destruction is leavin me oh so forlorn! I planted this garden for me  not for you So you mangey ole deer  just stay outta here! Stay out of my garden you ole woodchuck you I definitely donÂt want what you came here to do YouÂve left holes in the rows I so neatly have sown Your destruction is making me we-ep and moan I planted this garden for me not for you So stay out of my garden you ol groundhog you. Stay out of my garden dear bunnies so sweet Go somewhere else to find something to eat I planted this garden for me not for you So stay out of my garden you little bunnies you. Stay out of my garden you ugly ol bugs My gardenÂs off limits to you thieves and thugs DonÂt want your destruction in my garden so dear So you ugly ol bugs  just stay out of here. If IÂve failed to mention all you culprits by name The message is still just one and the same I planted this garden for me not for you So stay out of my garden  yes that includes you! © May 23, 2007 Sherrieflower And sometimes I sing another I made up: Guardian angels guard my garden keep it safe from all that would destroy Guardian angels guard my garden so abundant harvests I'll enjoy. :)

What is your favorite song of all time

    Q

Way way too many to list, or even to bring to mind! My top one is probably Canon in D - My heart turns over when I listen to that song. Second, maybe River Dance. I love so many that are already listed in this thread. Someone mentioned Oh Danny Boy and in that same category is Loch Lomand, two ancient songs that I've sung thousands of times. Used to sing them to my kids when they were babies and still sing them to myself from time to time. I have some favorite hymns... Amazing Grace and This is my Father's World are a couple. Unchained Melody - Wonderful song mentioned above. Many others. I love country western and old time rock. My list would be dozens if not hundreds!

gs-I saw GVF in a smaller theater venue last month-and I just know that the next time they come to my town they're going to be in a much bigger venue. I'll pay the price for their tickets-I just love them. I was thrilled to see so many over 50's in attendance. Have you heard The Struts? They opened for the Foo Fighters this past tour and just released their 2nd album. Got to do a M&G with them this summer, also. They're very fun.

A few I can think of off the top of my head:

"One day you're waiting for the sky to fall. The next you're dazzled by the beauty of it all." Bruce Cockburn's "Lovers Ina Dangerous Time."

"The screen door slams; Mary's dress waves." Bruce Springsteen's "Thunder Road." (Actually, I think that whole song is a beautiful poem.)

"Your heart beats my blood, my breath fills your lungs. Maria McKee's "Breathe."

Let there Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.
Let there be peace on earth
The peace that was meant to be.
    With God as our father
    Brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother
    In perfect harmony.

    Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.
    With every step i take
Let this be my solemn vow.
    To take each moment
    And live each moment
    With peace eternally.
Let ther be peace on earth,
And let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth

Religiously, Be Not Afraid, to this day can't hear it in church without tearing up. Played at my mom's funeral.

You shall cross the barren desert
But you shall not die of thirst
You shall wander far in safety
Though you do not know the way.

You shall speak your words in foreign lands
    And all will understand
You shall see the face of God and live. You Shall Live

    Be not afraid
    I go before you always
    Come follow Me
And I shall give you rest.

If you pass through raging waters
In the sea, you shall not drown
If you walk amidst the burning flames
    You shall not be harmed.

If you stand before the pow'r of hell
And death is at your side
Know that I am with you, through it all.

    Be not afraid
    I go before you always
    Come follow Me
And I shall give you rest.

    Blessed are your poor
For the Kingdom shall be theirs
Blest are you that weep and mourn
for one day you shall laugh.

And if wicked men insult and hate you
    All because of Me
    Blessed, blessed are you!

    Be not afraid
    I go before you always
    Come follow Me
and I shall give you rest...

Not religious, I Hope You Dance (Lee Ann Womack sings it beautifully, you can hear it on youtube)

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
    But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
    I hope you dance
    I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
    Living might mean taking chances
    But they're worth taking
    Lovin' might be a mistake
    But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
    Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
    Reconsider
    Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
    I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
    I hope you dance
    (Rolling us along)
    I hope you dance
    (Tell me who)
    I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
    (Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
    Dance
    I hope you dance
    I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
    I hope you dance
    (Rolling us along)
    I hope you dance
    (Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
    I hope you dance
    (Where those years have gone)

    (Tell me who)
    I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
    (Where those years have gone)

Not my very favorite, but in the top five. This one gets me teary-eyed every time b/c it has meaning to me.

    Luther Vandross
    Dance With My Father Again

Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around til' I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
How I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again, ooh

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He'd make me laugh just to comfort me, yeah yeah
Then finally make me do just what my momma said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance, one final step
    One final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never ever end
'Cause I'd love, love, love to dance with my father again

Sometimes I'd listen outside her door
And I'd hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I'm praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved?
I know you don't do it usually
But dear Lord she's dying to dance with my father again

Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream

There are too many to count for me. The old folk songs like "Green Green Grass of Home" sung by Joan Baez or "Who Will Watch the Home Place" sung by Laurie Lewis come quickly to mind. The one below written by Tom T Hall who has a way with words is a more current favorite. Simple accompaniment to a gentle singing voice, to me makes the lyrics more special.
OUR LITTLE WORLD (Tom T Hall)
    By: Tom T. Hall (BMI)
    Dixie Hall (BMI)

A LITTLE OLD CABIN OUT BACK
BREEZE BLOWING IN THROUGH THE CRACKS
SUN SHINES IN AT THE DOOR
CAN'T ASK FOR VERY MUCH MORE
A LITTLE 'OLE PUP AT OUR FEET
NEVER SEEMS TO CATCH UP ON HIS SLEEP
THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD IS AT PEACE
    IN OUR LITTLE WORLD

    IN OUR LITTLE WORLD
THERE'S NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR A WAR
NOTHING COMES IN OR GETS OUT THAT NEEDS FIGHTING FOR
SOMETIMES WE THINK WE'LL GO OUT BUT THEN WE STAY IN
    YOU'RE ALWAYS WELCOME MY FRIEND
    IN OUR LITTLE WORLD

IF THEY CAME AND TOOK ALL OUR STUFF
THEY SURE WOULDN'T GET VERY MUCH
SOME GRASS AND SOME FLOWERS AND TREES
    DAYS FILLED WITH OLD MEMORIES
THESE THINGS THAT COME ROUND AGAIN
CAN NOT BE HELD ON TO BY MEN
LOVE IS TO SHARE WITH A FRIEND
    IN OUR LITTLE WORLD

SOME PEOPLE SAY WE ARE FOOLS
WE STILL BELIEVE THAT LOVE RULES
LIKE CATS 'ROUND A SAUCER OF CREAM
HAPPY TO SIT HERE AND DREAM
THE BLESSINGS THAT EACH MORNING BRINGS
THE SONG OF A BIRD ON THE WING
AND KNOWING TO TREASURE THESE THINGS
    IN OUR LITTLE WORLD

I know this is from the musical "Carousel", buy it has more meaning to me. I had it played as the recessional at Frank's funeral - for me.

    You'll Never walk Alone

The first time I remember hearing it was when Dr Tom Dooley died, and Nat King Cole sang it in his honor.
Dr Dooley was a missionary doctor, and he was my hero.

When you walk through a storm
    Keep your chin up high
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At he end of the storm
    Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.

    Walk on through the wind,
    Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.Walk on, walk on
    With hope in your heart
    And you'll never walk alone,
    You'll never walk alone.

Just A Closer Walk With Thee
    I am weak, but Thou art strong;
    Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
    I'll be satisfied as long
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
    Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
If I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
    Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

When my feeble life is o'er,
    Time for me will be no more;
    Guide me gently, safely o'er
To Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

Just a closer walk with Thee,
Grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
    Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Dylan's Forever Young, a parent's song for his son

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
    And climb on every rung
    May you stay forever young
    May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
    May you always be courageous
    Stand upright and be strong
    May you stay forever young
    May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
    May you stay forever young
    May you stay forever young.

    I Am Woman..by Helen Reddy.
    I LOVE that song.

    (Helen Reddy and Ray Burton)
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
    Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
    Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
    If I have to
    I can do anything
    I am strong (strong)
    I am invincible (invincible)
    I am woman
You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
    Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
    Oh, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
    Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
    If I have to
    I can face anything
    I am strong (strong)
    I am invincible (invincible)
    I am woman
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
    But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
    Oh, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
    Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
    If I have to
    I can face anything
    I am strong (strong)
    I am invincible (invincible)
    I am woman
    Oh, I am woman
    I am invincible
    I am strong
    I am woman
    I am invincible
    I am strong
    I am woman

I cant believe I left one out, I have a bumper sticker that says this:

I bet I have sung along with Alison Krause this song hundreds of times since my mom died. I cling to this verse .. But if I trust the one who died for me....

In the Palm of Your Hand

If I could have the world and all it owns
A thousand kingdoms, a thousand thrones
If all the earth were mine to hold
    With wealth my only goal

I'd spend my gold on selfish things
Without the love that Your life brings
Just a little bit more is all I'd need
'Til life was torn from me

I'd rather be in the palm of Your hand
Though rich or poor I may be
Faith can see right through the circumstance
Sees the forest in spite of the trees
    Your grace provides for me

If I should walk the streets no place to sleep
No faith in promises You keep
I'd have no way to buy my bread
With a bottle for my bed

But if I trust the One who died for me
Who shed His blood to set me free
If I live my life to trust in You
Your grace will see me through

I'd rather be in the palm of Your hand
Though rich or poor I may be
Faith can see right through the circumstance
Sees the forest in spite of the trees

If I could have the world
If I could have the world and all it owns

"Sometimes this old farm feels like a long-lost friend, Yes 'n' hey, it's good to be back home again"

I just like that part of the song. It makes me think of the house I grew up in.
