What is the worst lie you ever told?

I would, in high school, intercept phone calls from my guidance counselor and pretend I was my mom because I was getting bad grades.

I have never been much for lying. Too in your face for that.LOL

I probably have many lies of omission under my belt though. I just can't remember any that stand out right now but if I do I will post it later. I'm sure there is something. I've just repressed them.

Now Michelle. I am going to say something the same I would if you were my best friend i n real life. I like you and would like to think you would want to hear what I feel to be true.

Your pretending to be your mom is not your worst lie. If you count lies of omission the "lie" in your other post about your former boyfriend is the big one. That may be why you are having those dreams and wanting to clear the air.
You are being haunted so to speak. But that doesn't change my advice in that post. Only that you need to make peace with yourself. It was a tragic,painful time for you. But it cannot be changed. I wish you only dreams that leave you waking with a smile in the future.

I have to agree with wildchild. Combined with the post about the lost baby and finding someone on the internet I think that it is something that you are going to have to deal with ((hugs))

I will admit that I have been known to tell a whopper or two. Never to hurt anyone, more to protect them.

Many of you have had some interesting jobs! I can't say I have had any job that I could even characterize as "worst." For the most part, most of my time was spent in in air conditioned buildings, I didn't get too dirty (except packing supplies and taping boxes ruined my hands and some many a pair of Hanes stockings) and the people I worked with in all of my jobs were pleasant enough with the exception of a few, but that's to be expected. Summers I worked for my dad's business while in high school and all throughout college every afternoon doing office work--filing, bookkeeping, answering the phone, filling orders and packing supplies, delivering supplies, cleaning the bathrooms--you name it, I did it. It was good, general experience and the best part was the time I spent as an adult with my Dad. I guess the most interesting job I had was working for a criminal defense attorney when I graduated from college. I had to travel to different states and hunt down some pretty questionable characters to take statements and get affidavits regarding a murder--we were defending a guy that shot a guy in the back of the head from the back seat of a car over a drug deal. I remember we all said he had "Manson Eyes." Also, I had some interaction with some dangerous people in undercover work for the federal government--illegal arms buyers, drug dealers. But I can't say it was unpleasant--I enjoyed knowing that one day these people would be going to jail for their crimes. Nope--no bad jobs--they were all good!

cyn, thank you sincerely for your posts, as without them, I would not have known that others may have interpreted my post, as you did, and I need to correct that immediately! Firstly, thanks for informing us that the word 'racism' was actually coined in 1902, much earlier than I thought. Since many people obviously behaved in ways in the late 50's/early 60's that were definitely racist, I actually don't recall ever hearing the word 'racism' when I was little, so I guess I thought the words came into usage much later. But more importantly, roarah is precisely correct in understanding that I meant racism was APPARENTLY 'acceptable' meaning it was WRONGLY TOLERATED. Yikes, I hope everyone will now understand (with my apology to those who didn't) that I was not accurate and precise enough with my wording to make that perfectly clear! Also, I guess I need to clarify that I had never heard the 'N' word before, so I did not have a clue what it meant. It was NEVER said in my house by my parents, or said on our street (that's why I mentioned "I did not even know what the 'N' word was, nor did my friends, I'm sure.") I had never heard it until starting school, where it was used in "Eenie, meenie..." before a game was begun, to see who was the starter of the game or "It." So I was meaning that I regretted participating in the schoolyard chant with no knowledge of the word, having never heard it at home or among my little friends on our street. Only because it comes up frequently at this time of year, I wanted to comment about the appropriateness or inappropriateness of using the "last frost date" as a planting guide. Many folks (and a whole lotta websites!) seem to think the average last frost date for their area will determine when any planting can take place. This is an invalid assumption. The average last frost date is typically only an indicator of when it might be safe to plant out cold sensitive plants like annuals or very tender perennials. And a date to count backwards from when starting seeds indoors, so they will be of sufficient size and maturity at a safe planting time. But it has little to no bearing on when one can plant fully zone hardy plants like most trees, shrubs and perennials. These should be able to take frosts easily, although newly emerging foliage may be damaged with a sharp frost but will recover. Generally, the only limitation to when they can be safely planted is the soil condition and if the plant has been hardened off. If the soil is workable and the plant still dormant or if not dormant, adequately acclimated/hardened off, then you can plant any time regardless of when the last frost may be.

No, I don't lie. I would have looked at that VIP ticket taker and asked him if I really had to walk all the way back and around to the ADA entrance. It just doesn't seem necessary to lie. I doubt she/he would have insisted you go back, especially if you weren't taking a goody bag or anything. i don't think it would occur to me to lie about it. We have friends who tell little lies all the time. Once they had friends visiting from CA and at dinner the husband said that we were the smartest people they ever met (so not true) and went on to tell how I do the Sunday crossword puzzle in ink and in some ridiculously short amount of time I do use a pen, but it is a sensory thing-cannot stand writing with pencils. I tried to correct him, but he kept insisting his story was true. It seems silly and I don't know why they do it because now I never trust a thing they say. When it comes to the baby incident, that is easy. There are all kinds of sweet wonderful things one can say to a new parent that will fill up her heart and be true. As to the party thing, I would do as others suggested and either say I have another commitment (watching my favorite show or whatever) or do as Ms. Manners says.

I hate lying!!!! I guess when I was a child I may have lied about something I shouldn't have done but I can't think of anything because I just don't lie about things. I have this crazy SIL that makes up the craziest stories constantly....I absolutely HATE IT! I can't imagine why my brother would have married someone like her? But that's JMHO only.

Like wildchild, I've had a few lies by omission. My face is too transparent to get away with a real lie.

An incident that comes to mind....Across the road from our farm was a woods with a small lake in the middle. Mom was always scared I'd fall through the ice in Winter. It could be a foot thick and able to drive a car across it and she'd still tell me not to fall through the ice when I was going to the woods. One Spring, when I was 11 or 12, the ice melted, then refroze into this surface that was smooth as glass. It was a windy day and I had the brilliant idea to take my sled and an aluminum scoop shovel to use as a sail to the lake. It worked! I was really moving. Then I realized the ice was so thin that as I swept past the cattails going parallel to the shore water was squirting up around them. I almost made it to shore when I crashed through the ice! I stood up drenched, tossed the sled and shovel on shore and headed home. I took a slightly longer route home to avoid my Grandparents house so Grandma wouldn't see me walking home all wet. If she did I knew she'd rat me out. By the time I got home my clothes were freezing stiff. I was in luck. Dad and Mom had gone into town. The house was empty. I peeled off my clothes, tossed them in the dryer, and added wood to the stove to get thawed out. 45 minutes later I'm taking the long way back to the lake to pick up my gear. Then, I casually walk home, waving to Grandma as I go by her house looking like it was just another uneventful day at the lake. It was about 30 years later when I finally confessed to Mom that I really did fall through the ice one Winter.

I pretty much don't like lying, but we all have. If I had a "worst lie" I most likely would not want to share it ever, since it may hurt someone else besides me. I tell white lies to protect feelings, but lying is not something I do, I am very honest. You ask some very personal questions here, but interesting.

When I was in sixth grade, my good friend Lynn wrote a short story. I liked it so much, I asked if I could borrow it. I recopied it and submitted it to my school newspaper, saying I had written it. They printed it and of course Lynn found out, and she was so angry she was no longer friends with me. Thou shall not streal...

I'm not a good liar because it is really something I don't do unless someone else will get hurt. Being honest gets me in more trouble, but oh well. At least I don't have to remember what I lied about. My biggest lie ever was one to protect a child who might have been in danger if I had told the truth.

Maybe not the worst, but maybe...I can think of a few doozies.

When I was about 13 my sister and her new husband took over the dairy farming from our grandparents.
I was spending the summer with them and I was painting a fence.
When it was time for lunch, I went in the house and she handed me a gallon jar and asked me to go to the milkhouse and fill it.
I had seen it done hundreds of times by using the drain spout at the bottom - but I was too young and was supposed to use the scoop and take from the top.
I just knew I could use the drain.
It was simple. Take the pin out of the last position and move it to a front position - that keeps the 3" diameter plug from coming the whole way out.
The plug was like a pressurized cork with 800 (or more?) gallons of milk pushing on it.
So what do I do?
I take the pin out and lay it down.
Slowly I start to tug on the plug
POP!
It came completely out and I am getting literally hosed with milk! It was gushing like a fire hose.
Whether it was the grace of God, fear of BIL, or pure adreneline, I got it back in. But I couldn't find the pin!
It had shot across the room in the spray.
I literally had to put my foot on the plug and stretch out to reach it.
And there I sat drenched in milk, shaking badly.
Lord only knows how many gallons of milk I lost that day. I have know idea if it was 10 seconds or 3 minutes. I was shaking so bad. I knew I had cost them precious money.
I had to hose down the milkhouse and myself before I went back in the house.
I told my sister I was hot so hosed myself off with water.
I have never told them what happened and I never got milk again.

There are not many things I hate, but liars are at the top of the list. I do lie, I told a whopper a couple of days ago, but not for myself. Here is my kind of lying. My gardener backed into my garage door and he was so upset I thought he was going to cry. The first thing out of his mouth was there is no way I can pay for this. I told him to forget it. It was an accident and I have more money than I have time left. He won't forget it, so when he called to ask what the estimate was I said it will cost $300. to repair. He was very relieved. It will actually cost almost $700 to replace it. I don't want him to worry about it, it was an accident. If you ask me if I like your outfit and I don't like it I will lie.

I really don't consider a white lie such as "does my dress make my *** look big" and I say "NO". Anyone with any sense isn't going to be so blunt as to tell someone they look bad.
