COMPUTER!

LOL My friend Vicki called me the other day and asked me if I wanted their old computer that was down in the family room and of course I said Yes! They have had their new computer for a few years now and kept the old one as a backup. Vicki's daughter has now gone off to University and has her own laptop so now they don't need 2 computers anymore. She dropped it off on Monday.

It is funny because the week earlier my friend Kathy asked me if I wanted her printer/scanner because she couldn't figure out how to work it so bought herself a new one. She knew I was looking to buy a computer.

Vicki brought it over in a box and that evening I went out and bought a computer table from XS Cargo for $37. I came home and spent 3 hours putting the thing together with very little instructions. I surprised myself at being able to put the thing together. Lots of screwing in pieces and putting slides together so that the mouse pad and the keyboard slide out.

Then I had the task of putting the computer together. I had to call Vicki to find out what plug went in where. In the old days - way back in the early 80's I knew everything about computers - LOL not anymore. LOL After getting everything plugged in and the Woofer and speakers set up I was ready to go. LOL

I played Pinball and Solitaire. The computer has Windows 2000, Excel, Powerpoint and some other programmes. I just found lots of other games on it today. Last night when I was on it though the screen went black and red words appeared to say something was not connected or missing or plugged in or something like that and the computer went dead. I couldn't reboot it or anything. Thank goodness when I tried it this morning the computer came on.

I still have to hook up the printer once I find where it plugs into. I most likely won't get it hooked up to the internet for a while. I have to find the cheapest dial up in this area. I am looking into the One Plan that Webtv offers. I have to see if I can get MSNIA in this area first then once I sign up for it I call Webtv then I will only get billed by MSN and get both the internet for the computer and Webtv will be free.

Now I have no excuse, I have to start writing and see what words come out of these fingers of mine. LOL

I am so excited to finally have a computer and grateful I have some wonderful friends.

Congratulations on your gift. That was very nice of her. Hope you can get hooked up to internet soon. I have dial up and it's so slow sometimes, but better than nothing. lol.

It sure is better than nothing! LOL I have dial up with my Webtv and it isn't really that slow but I can't go onto a lot of sites that have been updated and if a post has a lot of pictures or gifs in it. I am surprised I can still access That Home Site with my webbie. Everytime they update the site I get worried I will not be able to get back in. Webtv hasn't given us an update for a long time now but I don't see pop ups or other things computer users see and I don't have to worry about a virus shutting me down. I love my little black box and the wireless keyboard and the television screen as my monitor but I can do more things with a computer than I can with Webtv - like write a book. LOL

Thank you for all the kindness. You guys are really wonderful. I used a mix of used 1 portland, 1 peat moss, 1 sand and 1 perlite. I was really scared when it was time to de-pot it, becuase I didn't use plastic inside I only sprayed it with WD40. I had to give it a few good hard taps with a shovel handle while it was upside down- after I rolled it into place on it's side, but it came right out. I plan on painting them all and I'll post pictures of the finished products. I'm going to space them out along the fence at the rear of our backyard. Thanks so much for the courage you all gave me in attempting this. I've been a lurker on this site for 5 years and finally got started. I have definately caught the bug. I was looking at the panels at the bottom of our screen room today and I have a plan for a hypertufa living wall to replace the ugly t1-11 paneling that's currently in place. When I get the pots done I'll finish up the planning and post my thoughts to see what you think.

joeb004 we have had this discussion a few times now. The soil water and lighting is the most important aspects in my opinion. The plant cannot adapt to really hard water, nor can it to really bad light or soil mix. These will indeed make the plant grow slower and make it sick. I am proof however that adapting the plant to humidity of 30-40% still allowed the plants to grow large traps, grow lots of leaves and stay in good health. Various plants are picky about humidity, especially some Nepenthes. VFT's however are not one of these plants. If you want to build a terrarium then thats fine, if however you dont have the cash for that or dont have the space and simply want the plant in a pot on a windowsill, then adapting it makes plenty of sense. If the plant is still happy and this can be seen by the rate of growth, the size of growth and the look of the leaves, root system and bulb, then why would it be a bad thing? And if it was not a bad thing, then Id have to say that in the instance where someone wants to grow the plants in a pot that it makes alot of sense. Im curious as well if you have done an experiment of a hardened off plant VS a terrarium plant and what the results where. Mine was that once adapted fully the hardened off plant grew at the same rate and produced good sized traps of up to 1.5" in length. It also was alot greener and firmer on the leaves and was never sickly. Cheers Sheldon

Joyce, I'm not sure that an umbrella palm is what I'm looking for. Is that the one that can grow to seven feet tall? I especially want things that grow in water near the shore for decoration and cover for small aquatic critters. Got anything else? Or am I mistaken about what the umbrella palm is? Also, thanks Queens for the tip. I'll be careful.

Cherryfizz, do you know about *The One Plan* that MSN offers? You don't have to get rid of your Webby! You can have both for the same price - one ISP. You can't use them both at the same time of course. Since WEBTV is virus proof it is ideal for reading email and checking sites that maybe suspect and use the computer for computer stuff. And of course if you like to surf while lying on your couch instead of at a desk, you would now have the option to do either.

The biggest plus is that when your computer goes down or starts acting up (and it will, it will) you can still go on yor WEBTV to the computer help sites and get answers to fix it.

You have to call MSN for it not MSNTV. If you call MSNTV they won't know what you are talking about. I know they still have it.

Great! Now we can hear more of the "Annie Chronicles" that we've been missing.

There is an old saying: "To have a friend, be a friend."

You have been a friend to many, so now you are being rewarded.

You are going to have so much fun (and some frustrations) learning all that you can do. I learn new things constantly and you will too. If I had to make a choice between my PC or TV I would definitely keep the PC.

One suggestion. Use the CompHelp Forum any time you have a problem or question. There are knowledgeble helpers there. In fact, even after 12 years of having a computer, I go there first thing each day before going anywhere else. That way I can read about anything new that is important to keeping my PC healthy.

I hope you will have everything set up the way you want it and start that book! We will all be glad to edit and proof it for you!
