There are some who are on our naval base..that are still working but unsure of pay..most are already on furlough...
They have closed the commissary and exchange..there were active duty spouses saying there husbands may not get their 15 th of the month check..

Our community is mostly military...either in the service..or work on the base..

I feel for the families that are having to endure this BS grid lock.

I know they passed a back pay for those "working with out pay" and WIC is still funded for now too.

I don't think you need to worry about getting paid. The House unanimously voted for the back pay; the Senate majority has already said they support it; the President says he will sign it when it comes to him.

However, if the shutdown continues for an extended period of time, paychecks might be delayed. If that creates a problem for you, you might want to contact your creditors and explain that your payments might be delayed. They are usually willing to work with you, and banks frequently waive overdraft fees--but you need to discuss this with them.

In the meantime, try to enjoy your "paid vacation."

can you apply for unemployment? While I was at the Work Force office faxing some papers, there was a woman there who was a federal employee there who was doing the same. She said she was eligible.

Depending upon the state, federal employees may be eligible to receive unemployment benefits for the furlough period. HOWEVER, if employees receive back pay (which is highly likely), they would have to repay any unemployment benefits received. IMO, it is not worth the effort to apply for unemployment, given the likelihood of back pay.

I'm still working, no vacation here. Just not sure I'm going to get paid. I guess I'll find out Friday. One of my coworkers talked to one of the union workers and all she said was some people would be getting half a paycheck...no specifics on who those people would be. The assistant manager told me she didn't know anything more than me.

A friend, furloughed from the Forest Service, tried to sign up for unemployment on Friday. She was informed that they can't verify her employment due to the shutdown.

I'm a retired Federal employee (Social Security Admin). I went through the last shutdown 1994-95. I feel so sorry for the current employees and their families. I hope this crazy shutdown ends soon!

My DH is a gov't contractor for the Navy. Some of his meetings on base have been cancelled. He is okay for now since his contract is funded, but most of our area (outside Washington DC) is government and/or military, or people that depend on those them: food trucks, restaurants etc. that are nearly empty right now

My DH was called yesterday informing him that they will return to work Monday after a week on furlough. A sigh of relief is heard from the island.

Dorothy, glad your dh is going back to work. The last time this happened in the 90s they said they were without pay for weeks. They set up a food bank at our other facility in town for employees.

One thing about being repaid after the shutdown is over, what does one do in the meantime? Bill still keep coming!

It's times like this that financial advisors tell you you need to have 3-6 months of living expenses in savings so you can sustain yourself during an emergency.

So you drain all of your savings? Wohoo! Sounds fantastic! (said most sarcastically). My point was, have a heart people. There is no good answer to not getting paid. The only good answer is for the government to reopen and reopen now.

I thought only people who actually worked were getting paid, though late? Or are all the people who couldn't come into work still being paid?

Obviously I think everyone should be paid since it wasn't their choice to skip work, and it's not like it was a stress-free vacation. But that is wasting soooooo much money to pay hundreds of thousands of people for not doing anything for a week plus, since the work still needs to be done eventually.

Again, that's not aimed at the workers at all but rather the incredibly inefficient government. And the irony that this all happened because of disagreements over spending...

Well, not to get too political, but that doesn't really encapsulate it.

Beyond fed'l workers, the ripple effect of people not working is not insignificant either. That unpurchased cuppa coffee or donut on the way to work are just 2 tiny examples. The businesses that depend on tourist traffic in/near national parks, e.g. So it isn't just those directly employed by the fed. gov't.

The public is very disgusted, but the partisanship continues.

I don't think draining your savings is that big of a deal if you know you're getting back pay for the time you're not working. I've been through long term layoffs where you don't get any back pay. These are the tough times you need savings to get by. That's one of the things emergency savings are for.
