Check Scam--US and Canada--

On our local news two days ago it was reported that a boy received a letter, check, and survey to be filled out. His mom checked it out and found the following:

Sun-X-International in TX had information stolen and these checks are being mailed out. The check is $3,490.50, you are asked to cash the check, fill out the survey, keep 150.00 for training fees (secret shopper) wire the rest to xxxxx. Our reporter called the number which appears to be a cell phone near Montreal, Quebec --city Magog

He questioned person then she hung up. FBI, Canadian officials and law enforcement have been notified.

Please be alert to this scam, and now a firm in Boston reported the same scam--check, survey etc.

PS--Also you are asked to take $300.00 from this cashed check go on a shopping spre at Target etc then fill the form out.

There's variations on this all the time. People buy your car, have you ship it to Europe or something and you cash a check and send them 9/10ths of it. And the check comes back in a couple weeks.

I'm constantly amazed that people are stupid enough to fall for this. I used to have sympathy for them. But not anymore. Too many people just don't think. And all the cons are doing is appealing to greed and they know how powerful greed is.

If only common sense were more common. Who in their right mind would think a company would trust people to send them money and trust you/me/us to send the money back to them? And of course, what reputable business would do that anyway?

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run. A Nigerian General has been emailing me and is going to make me rich.

When you get your purported hundreds of thousands from Nigeria, please send me some. I'll make sure to send you some money for your trouble.

Why would a legitimate company just arbitrarily send out money for no reason? And not the exact amount, but an over-payment?
I can't understand why people still fall for these things.

Phishing happens all the time on the internet, and people who are new to computers usually get caught. They think everything that comes into their email is legit. AOL has one where they want to "verify" their records and ask for your SSN, mother's maiden name etc and it's all identity theft. Just finished watching a show on CNN where a few guys are in jail for id theft. One guy created the AOL one, he was a Spammer.

Yep, well I am not in the mood to apologise for my use of glyphosate. If I had a penny for everyone of our customers who claimed to be organic, only to find something nasty lurking in their sheds, Mr.Camps and I would be rich gardeners today. When, and only when, the huge pharma companies such as Bayer, Monsanto and the hated Dow Agro get their collective wrists slapped and whopping bans and sanctions on them, will I feel ashamed about my negligible use of the considerably less toxix glyphosate compared to the evil pesticides such as imidacloprid....and as for GM!!!!

The Miele Warehouse is currently holding their warehouse sale. Thursday, November 17 to Sunday, November 20, 2011. They say prices are "up to" 50% off. I purchased an "A" grade Optima DW (that was a display only model in mint condition) for 40% off retail. I do think prices are higher in Canada to begin with though. I guess I will be the only positive post in this thread. ;) DH and I have a DirectBuy membership, although when we got it it cost around $2000 if I recall correctly. We were students at the time and have since gotten married (invitations and accessories came from DB) and bought a house. We also got our full set of appliances + big upright freezer for excellent prices. It's also a good place to get some gift items - like the Royal Doulton set we got for my MIL. Can't forget our big tv and entertainment set also. One of the good things is that they have a lot of different manufacturers to choose from with an endless selection. I can be indecisive so sometimes all the selection is a bad thing however. ;) Some items the deals are not that great on - for example certain electronics items. Others are more than 50% off (like that Royal Doulton stuff). Overall I think we have gotten our money's worth. It's also nice not to have to wait for sales, we can just buy whenever. Delivery times can be up to 6-8 weeks depending on where the item is coming from (I'm in Canada). However we got our appliances 3-4 days after ordering (was supposed to be 6-8 wks also) so I guess it depends on what the manufacturer has in the warehouse. Oh, one more thing they have at our local store - gas, grocery, and restaurant gift cards which you get at a discount (handy, since it's stuff I'd buy anyway, and very nice with the price of gas!). I can totally see how folks who are not planning to buy many "big ticket" items would lose money on this. Also, I was not a fan of the hard sales pitch, yuck! But overall it's not nearly as bad as the other posts made it seem IMO.

This is the problem....I cannot check it out..my 36" all fridge sub-zero comes tomorrow. The kitchen is set. There is no going back. 3 months ago, this would have me all over it. Maybe someone else is interested.

I'm still loving these 'personal' emails addressed to 'undisclosed-recipients'....hahahahaahahahahahaahahahahahaaa!

And let's not forget the 'free Dell laptop ... contact our shipping department'....hahahahahahahahahahaaaaaa .... again to our 'personal' email address mentioned above.

jasdip, I'll be glad to share! You wouldn't mind sending me a check for... guess I shouldn't even say it in jest, there's so many people that go crazy over nothing these days! (heavy sigh)

I guess there's the stupid penalty that needs to be paid by some people. Truly sad. The internet is a wonderful thing. It's also very dangerous to so many of the naive and stupid. At least before, the con artists had to go door to door or pay for postage. Now, dummies flock to them! Guess that's what they call progress.

But that aside, I'm having a GREAT day! How 'bout you? :D
