Any FREE ways to find someone living or dead?

I heard at a recent reunion that an old friend of mine had passed away, but no one seemed to know any details. Since that time, I have tried to research online but can find no evidence of his death. A big problem is the fact that his last name is one of the most common names in the US and the first name isn't uncommon either. The social security death index has hundreds of thousands of people by his name. I do know his middle name and his date of birth and his spouse's name, several addresses and phone numbers. Everyplace I've looked, they say "Yes, we've found so and so" and then ask me for credit card info to go further. Is that information FREE anywhere??? Thanks!

Sometimes I can find an obituary by typing the person's name and state in the search box at legacy.com. Or type it in Google with the person's full name and the word "obituary" included in the search.

Well if he's dead, the SS Death Index does have an Advanced Search where you can fill in exact birth date, plus some other details, which does somewhat narrow a name search.

I wonder if anyone has noticed that not a single match has been made on this thread between a person with extra dirt and a person who needs it who are both close to each other. Not surprising. I suggest using your local Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, etc. or the matching sites linked in this thread.

Hi Bramblebee: I know just how you feel it happened to me last year. Your Queen probally died, this happend quit often and as the brood dies off there is none to replace them. The ants came after the hive was so week they couldn't defend it. This is what I did this year and it worked for me. Retrive your honey and place in a cool dry area, if you have any empty frames in the brood box save them and the ones that have something in them (anything) remove the comb replace with new foundation. Replace the bees in the spring and as always you will have to feed the new bees, give them some of the honey in the brood box but also feed the proper sugar mix. The most important thing to do is check for that queen, I know she is hard to see so look for eggs, if you see eggs, she was there in the last two days. This year I checked mine at least every 3 weeks (normal life cycle of the worker bee) that way if she is not there you have time to requeen. Another thing I did I started feeding my bees in Oct even though they had a good bit of honey, now it is paying off the hive is still strong dispite having a poor fall and relative hard winter. what is a LIVE Frasier fir? we need some more facts .... was this a xmas tree ?? kept in the house for a few weeks??? if so ... how hot was the thermostat... how did you tend for it in the house.. do you have a humidifier on the heating system? when did it make it outside.. how was it cared for during the winter.. how & when was it planted? how deep .... what soil.. removed burlap ... potted??? etc ... after planting... how was it tended/watered this summer ... the problem with conifers .. is that the leaves.. aka needles... only hang on the tree for 1 to 3 years... then they are shed ... so ... a needle can have been dead for quite a while.. before it finally browns and falls off ... it is hard.. but i am trying to find out when those branches or needles died.. and hence am wondering if the injury was last xmas when it was in the house ... you have extensive damage .... as you suspect... it might live.. and be a weirdo for a long time.. but if you have the room.. what the heck ... may as well toy around with it ... shade is not good for most conifers.. but it alone .... would not lead.. this fast.. to the damage you describe ... IMO .... if a branch is entirely brown all the way to the trunk .. with no buds for next spring... then that branch is dead.. and can be removed ... once you remove all the dead branches.. you have to decide whether it is worth 'saving' .... any branch can be re-trained as a new leader .... and it easier to do that.. if you DONT immediately remove the old top .. it will give you something to tie the branch upward... and perhaps by next winter..... you can remove the dead stuff ... any chance you can post a picture?? ken

I think those leaves are not new baby leaves but old lower dried up. Correct me if I'm wrong. Please touch the rhizome if it's soft or squishy. Roots look ok to me. I would cut those leaves until I see how inside of rhizome looks like. If its brown, hollow it's goner. It should be pale green or soft yellow color. Dust w/cinnamon,let dry. Pot up in a few days and don't water. Soil mix should be fast draining. But let's wait until someone else more experienced chime in. I could be wrong. Inna

I did the advance search for Social Security, but there were over 900,000 results with the name of Jones and even with the additional info, the results had poor results like including a John Jones, when I requested William Jones and the birthdates weren't right either. No luck with google either.

If you know the city, and the death was fairly recent, you can go to the funeral home site and look there.

If you know where he lived, try newspaper archives for his obit.

What kind of info are you looking for?

It is important to bear in mind that the Social Security Death Index does not list everyone who has died, even if they had their own SSN. The SS Death Index only lists folks if a survivor has filed a claim for the Death Benefits that the SSA pays out.

RedCurls, send me an e-mail via My Page (be sure to put KT on the subject line) and give me what details you do have -- full name, date of birth, etc., and I'll see what I can find out. I have access to everything on Ancestry.com. In addition to the SS Death Index, many states have their own Death Index, and if it's available, I can search it.

Lindsey, I don't think that the death index only includes those who have claims against their SS. I have a relative who died with no spouse (ever) and no children and his name appears on the index.

Sometimes a funeral home will report a death to SS even though the deceased wasn't known to be receiving monthly benefits nor had any known person/survivor entitled to the $255 (or such) burial benefit---just to cover all the bases. Mostly though, these people don't show up on the Index.

The unfortunate story with State Birth & Death Indexes is they are usually woefully incomplete. As an example, California's hasn't been updated since something like 1998---which is 13 years ago, so if the person who died post that year doesn't show up on the SS Index, you have a problem.
