The Kitchen Table

Back from DIsney

Just got back from a week at Disney World for DGD's 2nd Birthday. Nothing like the look of a young child as they see the parades, meet the characters, see the animals at Animal Kingdom. And she was great on her first airplane flights - a real little trooper.

Now - back to the real world :)

No Longer a 'balcony' Gardener

Hey Nova! I couldn't believe my eyes, as I've been searching for the exact same type of apartment -in northern VA, but not in Alexandria! I have to move from a house to an apartment, and want to become a Balcony Gardener. As you well know, exactly how much sun you will be getting is all important, so I'm wondering exactly how much sun you will be able to offer your plantings? Will you do veggies and flowers? If only flowers, you know also that there are many that don't require full sun. Please let us know as we are interested.

I reckon I'm one of the oldies...LOL I do pop in and see who all has posted. I should post more...I still grow roses but have neglected them this year because of losing Mama in April. I have just been in a black hole without having her here. I think perhaps I need to crawl out of my hole, quit licking my wounds and just crawl ahead for a while. I never thought Mama would die like she did...just awful. I miss all the old rose buds too. I hate change. I want things to go back the way they were too...but alas, they never can. Love to all my old buddies, Deb

I love this show...this is from Variety (you might have to skip the ad if you read the link) "Additionally, [casting director] Strack points out that dire poverty is not a prerequisite for being cast. "That's a huge misconception," Strack continues. "We have to be conscious of what we're doing. We can't give someone a big house knowing full well they can't afford to keep it." Home-makeover recipient Brian Wofford of Encinitas, Calif., credits the show's producers with "drumming it" into his head that "with a bigger home comes bigger upkeep." To ensure that he could afford a big, new house for himself and his eight children, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" conducted a thorough check into his financial background, according to Wofford. Someone's financial history is only one part of an extensive background check. The show investigates every aspect of a potential subject's life. Strack contends that the background check "is the same as if you were applying for a job at the FBI." Veronica Ginyard, a resident of Capitol Heights, Md., whose family was the subject of an episode, says she had to provide court records to back up her contention that she was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of her ex-husband. "You have to prove your story," Ginyard says, "and I don't blame them one minute for that. Once vetted, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" pitches a family to ABC executives who make the final decision. A family doesn't actually find out whether it has made the cut until the day host Ty Pennington and his crew arrives at their house." Here is a link that might be useful: Variety

Yes, I live in sunny So Cal~~~I live inland about 35 miles from Disney and my DD lives about 30 miles from there on the coast so we meet there. It is the most fun when it is not too crowded but you can never tell~~~we have been going since the baby was about 9 months, now that I am retired I can go monthly. We always eat breakfast there, we only stay about 4 hours and have only gone once in the evening. You all will have alot of fun no matter when you go it is so pretty now.

Monica - Visiting Disney World with your little granddaughter sounds like tons of fun!

Jae TN - My first visit to the original Disneyland was for my 5th birthday too, and that was their opening year. I still remember what a great time I had, and I'm sure your dgd will too.

Disneyland is less than an hour's drive for us, and it's so long since we've gone there. You are making me think it is time to fit the Magic Kingdom into our busy schedule.

I've been there 3 times-once when an Uncle died, made a side trip to Orlando, then twice when our kids were little. Love the looks on their faces when they met the characters. We made sure to have Breakfast with Mickey. Glad you had a good time!

I gifted my gs, his dad, and mother, a trip to Disney World when gs was 4. They stayed at Disney's All-Star Sports Resort. GS is now 15.

I'm sure you all enjoyed seeing the Magic Kingdom through DGD's young eyes!

Our DS astounded us by asking if we could all go to Disney World for a vacation. He was 23 and living in on his own! We went, of course, and stayed on property.

susanjf -- We were all fashion plates then, weren't we? I wore a suit, hose, heels (and a *girdle*) departing Chicago on a plane for our honeymoon. I had a lynx fur hat, too (in a hat box). Now airplane passengers look like they're planning to go jogging or mow the lawn. (Not that I miss the girdle!)
