any one use #2 pencils ?

I have got tired of all the #2 pencils collecting up in my drawer so I made a choice to use those pencils (an a sharpener) to do my journal. DM even uses ink pens to do her crossword books. I'm just curious. l.marie

If I were to use ink pens to do puzzles ...

... I'd need a substantial supply of White-out, too!

(I buy erasers in 3-packs ... and even then, often it's hard to find one, when I need it).

Could you list what parts you used? I was at lowes today and was looking in the pvc parts for something I could put together. A 4'' canister and caps w/ hose threads. I didn't find any thing at all like it. Lucky (or unlucky) you! I found a picture. It looks like it was taken with an old Barbie camera, so apologies for the quality. You can barely see the gray colored thread adaptor at the right side. You can see the kitty litter I used, charcoal, and Scotch brite pad I cut down to keep the filter innerds from flowing out into the hose. If you have trouble finding the thread adaptors to go from hose threads to the pipe thread, ask a clerk. I had to ask everywhere I went looking for them. It looks like I did not use any PVC pipe at all but only used pipe fittings. This experiment was from June of 2003 so I've forgotten a lot since then. If you want to get an idea of a ratio of charcoal to kitty litter (zeolite), crack open a filter from one of those water filters you put into the container in your fridge (like a Pur). I was surprised to find only a few specks of black charcoal inside. Most of it is zeolite. Still luckier YOU! I just went out and searched the archives of my garage and found the filter. Here's a modern picture. As you can see I did use 2-inch PVC pipe in the middle. This picture shows the threaded parts much better. It has to come apart somewhere to fill, or refill, with the filter medium. The gray nipple on the left side is straight pipe threads, not hose threads. The female hose fits on the male pipe threads okay (not great), but at the other end I wanted a better solution. It is a real pipe to hose connector. If I had it to do over again I would use 3-inch pipe for more filter volume and less water speed through the filter medium.

Yes, most everything that you mentioned will grow well in unfinished compost. I do that all the time, due to a variety of reasons. First, I like that I can get huge amounts of wood chips (the most acid of all organic amendments) for free, from tree companies. When they arrive, you have to put them somewhere, or your wife will divorce you, and that is on top of the beds. The chips are easy to move around with a pitchfork, whereas finished compost is much more of a pain (I produce small amount of finished compost for seedlings only). And the chips (or grass clippings, or leaves) do eliminate weeding, the chips for two years or so. Clippings and leaves, likewise, are easily movable with a pitchfork when they are still whole. Clippings go under plants as soon as they are produced, while leaves overwinter away from the garden only because piles of leaves turn into mice cities around here in the winter, otherwise they would go on the beds right away. Then you are left with the problem of having temporarily acid soil. For fruit trees and berries, that is not a problem. You will just mulch them with chips indefinitely, and they will be happy like that. I can guarantee that blueberries, raspberries, hardy kiwis, grapes, blackberries, pears, apples and currant are quite comfortable with wood chips only. All my flowerbeds and perennials get wood chips only, except irises and moonflowers, which need wood ash. The pH of the soil will rise as the matter decomposes, to the point where eventually the soil will get close to its original pH. There is a particular sequence that one has to follow to take advantage of this varying pH. Basically, amongst common veggies, potatoes will grow in wood chips that have been only slightly amended and are still too acid for most everything. In that soil, still not totally finished, the next year you will be able to grow tomatoes and squash and melons. The next year you can grow chicory (radicchio) and garlic. The next year you can try pole beans and collard. The next year the soil should be well done. Other large amounts of wood chips go well as a thick mulch (on top of finished soil) for tomatoes, all cucurbita, pole beans, collards, garlic and onions, and herbs. At the end of the season, I rake it in one pile at one end of the bed, and that will be a potato patch next year (repeat rotation). That is basically how I manage my soil. About 60% of my 8 beds were once wood chips. I use kitchen compost, which is quite N-rich, to correct the nitrogen deficiency of the chips. I also use urea and manure from my neighbor's horses, to the same effect (essentially N management). You have to add some N to unfinished compost, depending on its original green-brown ratio. You may have to add N for a few years. I use a lot of leaves, which produce nice, somewhat unfinished compost by May which is friendly to most vegetables. I particularly like leaves compost with lettuce. Finally, for some veggies even years later the soil remains a bit too acid. I add wood ash, which I have in great abundance. Virtually all veggies benefit from wood ash in my acid soil, but greens (arugula, rapini, bok choi, kale, tatsoi, spinach) and beets, in particular, can not grow without some. They prefer a more alkaline soil. I use wood ash basically for pH management. So most everything will grow well in the soil you have, if something looks poor, look up its optimal pH, then put lime or ash under it, on a case by case basis.

Sandra I use a lot of starch and glue on everything lol!!!!! I even starched the denim blocks I am making. Starch makes it so easy to match seams, easier to baste, and easier to quilt. And THEN I wash it all out! Years ago I used one of the blue pens that washes out, I marked an area and didn't finish quilting it for months (years?? lol) and some had disappeared but most of it was still noticeable. I tried everything to get it out and it always came back. Sooooooooooooo, I learned the hard way to use a light hand when marking and wash it out as soon as I can. are you sure its just not an intermediate stage during the growing season??? do you see any indication.. of where next years buds will be.. and if that new growth.. might not hide it all??? ... im sure you could cut it back to force new buds.. but then i suspect.. the plant will get wider.. kinda defeating the purpose of a tall thin plant ... im leery of fixing.. what might not be a problem .. may i ask.. why isnt it in the ground??? interesting media mix .. but i dont see anything so out of whack that it would cause this ... thats a lot of sun on a black pot ... can you put anything in front of it.. just to hide the pot from direct sun ... maybe you are overheating the roots on one side ... there appears to be a shrub on the opposite side .... i have the perfect solution .. since its potted.. lol ... turn it around.. so you dont have to look at it ... lol ... ken

I use the pencils to do crossword puzzles. For a while, I was using pens but I kept falling asleep and staining the pillowcases and sheets with ink! LOL

I keep two calendars, one at work one at home. Always use pencil because things change all the time. My favorite erasers are Pink Pearl or those white ones which come in a cardboard sleeve (forget the name). I hate a dull pencil. Have a pencil sharpener right by my computer.

I use mechanical pencils with erasers for almost all things. My handwriting is terrible, so I must be able to erase.

I only use a lead pencil for one thing, and that is to mark a board that I am going to saw. Then I immediately lose it before I am ready to mark the next one.

I work crossword puzzles with a pen because pencil marks show up too pale on my newspaper. Pen not recommended for the NY TIMES crossword.

I use #2 hardness lead in a mechanical pencil. Can't be without it. I use a ball point for check writing or anything else that requires permenancy.

In the early days of my career, I did quite a bit of drafting work. My favorite leads were #2 and #4 - did almost everything with those two hardnesses. I was using a professional lead holder instead of a regular pencil and a lead pointer. I still have those relicts and know how to use them., but put them aside with the advent of the desktop computer and software development.

I buy the cheapie #2 graphite loaded mechanical pencils but seldom use an eraser. Not sure why I use pencils. Getting less and less use. I sometimes will use an erasable pen but I seldom erase with pencil even. I still cross it out and change it. When I did more drawings and layout work I'd use pencil more but I don't do that much anymore and now I do more of that on the computer too.

I use the computer more and more so a lot of the time I am copying from computer notes so I usually don't need to erase. With checklists I'm scratching things off anyway.

All in all I find it easier to write with a pen than a pencil. A decent pen that is. Just flows smoother.

I love #2 pencils and just used them yesterday at school, filling in the standardized exam ovals. Before the exams, the kids take too long to fill in their names and info, so they asked me to prepare the papers ahead of time for each teacher's class. Lots and lots of ovals. Love those #2s!

One morning, when she was in high school, DD told me she needed a #2 Pencil for a test she was taking that morning. Searched the hpuse in vain,but all I had was pens. I quick drive out to a 42 hour Walgreens saved the day-luckily they had pre-sharpened pencils for sale. I don't own a sharpener!

I like those all-eraser erasers that stick on to the top of the pencil, as I'd be stuck with an eraser all used-up down to the metal sleeve, most of the time, otherwise.

But some of my pencils are so old that that all-eraser eraser has got so hard that it won't work, so I have to replace it with a fresher one.
