Hope you get to feeling better soon. I would have taken the shot to get the meds in my system right away.

Frankly, you should have had the shot! It's a moment of pain, and would have helped so much on your road to recovery. It seems you are afraid of medical treatment - but why?

They might stick you with a needle now - but you may have a major kidney infection later? You are also worried about who will care for your children? What happens if you are hospitalized later? Who will care for them then? It's just a shot!

I do not understand your reasoning at all.

Yes you should have had the shot. It is a loading dose of the antibiotic and would have given you a jump on getting better.

Be a good girl and take ALL of you meds, don't stop when you feel better.

I'm glad that you went to the doctor Miss Wimp! ;-) I should scold you for not taking the shot but at least take the antibiotics for the full course. Don't stop just because you are feeling better.

PS This Wimp got up the nerve to donate blood after her baby grand daughter needed many units of blood when she had acute kidney failure. Needles are not nearly as scary anymore! I am not saying I like them, but they don't scare me like they used to.

I hope you feel better soon. I truly understand where you are coming from as far as shots go. I, too, have a major phobia of them. But a year ago I had a terrible burning pain in my leg that was very intolerable. I was given a pain shot, much to my dismay. I really didn't want a shot. But, boy I tell you, when it finally took effect (took longer than usual for some reason), I was in heaven. That's one shot I won't ever refuse!! Just to have the pain gone for a few hours was such a relief. It hasn't been that bad since.

I got a steroid shot recently when I was coughing up blood. It didn't hurt at all. The needles are so fine now you barely feel them. I felt better within 2 hours. You should have taken the shot.

I am glad you went to urgent care. Take all your meds and drink plenty of fluids. I had a kidney infection a few years ago and in the ER they gave me several IVs plus they added antibiotics to the IV fluid. I was sicker than a dog when I went in and felt a little better when I left.

Now why, for crying in a bucket, would you not take the shot? The infection has all ready traveled up to your kidneys. It needs to be stopped by the quickest means possible. Are you waiting to become delirious from pain and fever and to be put on a four-day IV drip? (That's what happened to me even after quick treatment of a bladder infection.)

Do you not know how vital your kidneys are for LIFE?

You're a big girl; go back and get the shot and then thank God there are these wonderful meds available that can save us from pain, agony, and possible long-term kidney damage.

The reason bladder infections are so "bad," and why we must get the proper medical treatment for them is just that. If not treated they can travel up to the kidneys.

Child, I love you dearly, I love seeing your posts and hearing about your beautiful children...but right now I wish I were your mama. You would not be lovin' me as I drag you back to the clinic, by the ear if necessary! (No; I don't pull kids' ears; it's just a phrase.)

I'm glad you went in, Nicki and I hope the pills do the trick, but seriously, if you're not a LOT better by tomorrow, please don't wait until it's the weekend, go back and suck it up and get the shot.

An injection is much more effective and faster acting than a pill every 4 or 6 hours. Just close your eyes and think about something else, wouldn't you insist that your kids get one if THEY were ill? Where will they be if you're not around to take care of them? Please, sweetie, it's just a needle for an instant. You gave birth, for Pete's sake, you can handle anything!

I'm glad you went to the doctor Nicki. Now take your meds correctly. You should feel better even after the first day of meds. If you don't or get worse run don't walk back to the doctor. Be sure youtake all your pils and do go back for a follow-up urine test to be sure the infection is completely gone.

I'm going to be the sole person not to scold you for not taking the shot. Your reason may not be the same but new information shows that pills are just as good as shots in most cases. I've posted a link to one article below.

I was never allergic to any antibotics until the last time I had to take them a sinus infection.I broke out in hves in the middle of my treatment. When I discussed it with my doctor he said that is why antibiotic injections are very much out of favor with most doctors today. No one can ever predict when one will have an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. With pills the symptoms come on gradually. With a shot it is sudden and he said used to be the "major cause of fatalities in a doctor's office". His exact words,not mine. That's why injections are only given when absolutely necessary and when the patient can be observed for a time. No more here's your shot now go home and rest.

You are a lucky lady, not to need shots. Lots of diabetics take daily (even multiple a day) shots, and I take two once weekly for allergies.

Really, like Flamey said, I bet you would insist the kids get one, if they needed it.

I'm glad you got the meds that you needed, feel better soon. I'm not going to scold you for not getting the shot. Shots don't bother me so it would be easy to scold you for not getting it. I have a phobia when it comes to the dentist, so in a few years when I have to get dentures, please don't scold me for not taking better care of my teeth. Is it a deal?

Glad you went to urgent care. I may be a nurse but I'm much better at the giving end than the receiving end. However, I hope you won't regret not having a simple injection over more aggressive treatment should the infection not clear for you. Remember follow-up care is imperative until the urine cultures come back absolutely clear. Sending cyberhugs and congratulations for getting over your hesitation to seek assistance. PS....Drink lots of water!

Nikki, I hate needles, too. Just do what I do when I have to get blood drawn. Tell them to lay you down, and not let you see the needle. If I don't lay down, and I see the needle, I'm out! If they do what I tell them, there isn't a problem. I don't pass out, and they don't have to pick up my fluffy self!

Hi! I don't post very often, but...when I was six, I had severe bronchitis, and the doctor wanted to give me an antibiotic shot. I still remember the pale blue syringe. Anyway, there was no convincing me to take it, so they sent me home with the same thing--penicillin--in pill form. It turned out that I was extremely allergic. That shot could've killed me. So, yay for the fear of needles!

Alia, if you had the penicillin shot, you probably wouldn't have made it out of the doctor's office before you had gotten into trouble. You are right there, BUT the doctors office keeps epinephrine handy just for that sort of case. I hope you wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace just in case. It could save your life.

And I am sure this isn't the first time she has had an antibiotic so I don't think an allergic reaction was a biggie...I think that she has the right to choose whether to take a shot but with children and others as well as a job to think about, including having reached the point of blood in the urine, I think it was foolish not to take the shot...

The thought also struck me that you have children to throw into that mix and I wonder if you are passing that fear of needles on to your children.

I don't like needles and I have a gashong port in my chest so that I don't have to deal with them but in the situation you described, nikki I would have taken the shot.
