Sobriety day 1

This is a repeat of an email to some very close friends, rather than retype, I'd like to just share.

*****

It's a beautiful day in the neighbourhood....

Things clicked again this weekend after reviewing my actions last week of I must drink those last 3 beers because this is my last chance to have a drink, looking at them will cause a problem in a weak moment. I got it. This stuff is killing me, my life and hurting those I love the most. I don't want to go there any more. Not for any reason. The price is too high, I can't afford this anymore. Not even if I win the lottery tomorrow night. At the same time the idea of returning to WW has clicked along the same thought patterns of taking better care of myself. I'm ready. My mind is in 'the right place' for my fall / winter tune-up.

I met smiling faces in the parking lot before pulling the door open. More smiling faces inside. Yep, this was the right place and the right time to just be and nothing more. Absolutely enjoyed the meeting. Next week I will exchange information and obtain a sponsor. Relief. A few tears during the closing prayer and peace. Peace.

Don't worry about me. I'm doing great moving forward in many aspects. I can't thank both of you enough for being a part of my life. Our friendship means the world to me.

Lots of love all round,

Peggy

It says 6 hours for regular roundup but I get your point. I wish they'd compare against their commercial concentrates. And it's like I've been saying all along. You aren't saving $ with the concentrate when you have to spend more time and use more of it to accomplish the same thing.

Interesting timing Jim. Our local news recently reported that Spring, 2021 is the year of our Brood X (or 17 year) cicada emergence. I remember the last time it was supposed to happen and we didn't notice any major eruption in our neighborhood. https://www.phillymag.com/news/2021/01/28/philadelphia-cicadas/ This is a link to a CBS map of the areas involved - https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-brood-x-us-cicada-infestation-coming-in-2021/

I never thought of "devil's advocate" as being on the losing side of an argument but rather taking the position that is less popular as a way to point out the flaws in the popular pov. And that wasn't necessarily being cantankerous, but a useful tool in testing the strength of the argument.

Ditto, both what I've read and what I recall, the 'screaming mimi" was a World War 2 German rocket so-named by the Allies because of its distinctive sound. Stacey, I think you're referring to another World War 2 German weapon, the V-1 flying bombs used against England. These were called "buzz bombs", also because of the sound they made. Another terrifying WW2 sound came from German dive bombers, which were fitted with passive sirens on their bodies that would produce a characteristic siren sound when they were diving to attack.

I'm so glad the meeting turned out to have the right people for you and you feel good there. Online friends can be just as important, and everybody here wants to see you have the best you can for yourself.

Have you checked out AA online meetings? They are there 24/7 for people who cannot get out to meetings due to physical disabilty, child care issues, or job scheduling conflicts. They are also there to help people pull through "weak moments".

Sometimes it is best to also join some sort of new hobby group where the focus is not on alcohol or alcohol related issues so that you don't 'burn out' on AA meetings as your only social outing, and lose interest.

Good luck and all the best wishes for success.

Thank you everyone for your continue support. All of you mean the world to me.
I have a ton of craft projects to do, my house to paint and part-time work (have a few weeks off right now). Never at a loss for something to do. I make it a point to get out and do things, now I have xmas gifts to get done among other things. My DH is very supportive as well as his family. During our next visit I will let them know I am a very happy new AA member. The drink socially but always have non-alcoholic beverages available and never push drinks. Like dealing with my chronic depression I talk about things that affect me in the hope that others seek help knowing they are not alone in life's challenges. I am a firm believer of the saying 'when God closes one door, another one opens'. The last couple of months I have made many new friends from the forums, in person and I feel the inner spirit radiating and drawing positive people my way. I just had to listen and open my heart a little more. Next week when I get my sponsor I may look for a ride to another evening meeting which is an open meeting where members just talk. Boy have I met some terrific folk today - they've been around the block and are so positive. I feel blessed these days in so many ways.
Hugs back to all of you!
    Cheers,
    Peggy

what good way to start the day.

Good on you Peg. You are worth taking care of in every possible way and recognising your problem areas is a huge positive step. The group I am attending for grief issues also helps people with problems with alcohol or other addictions and I am learning what battles some people are facing. It is so important to treat yourself well in all respects - physically, emotionally and spiritually (whatever that means for each of us). You are a special, unique person and you deserve to give yourself the best possible life. You have lots of friends here who will help to hold you up when you need them. (((Peg))) Beth

Peggy, you don't know me, but I want to tell you that your attitude is that of a winner! You will win the battle over Demon Alchol because you have already made up your mind that that is what you are going to do. Know that you have many people ready to listen whenever you need an ear.

    Hi Peg,

Your soul sounds so healthy right now - what a wonderful thought!! My best to you for each day ahead.

Do you keep a journal - I don't know if that is a good thing or not, according to AA or such, but thought I'd ask. I know your story may end up helping someone else take that first step as well.

Hip, hip Hooray for you! Bet you become a shining light for others.

One of our DS, sober for 15 years, still attends AA meetings. He finds solace in the meetings and had close friendships develop that have lasted through the years.

    You CAN do this!

Peggy....just wanted you to know that you are in my prayers and I just KNOW that you will do well. You have a positive attitude and are willing to help yourself. My sister always says to look out for the good in life and think positively and the universe will reward you. Good Luck!

Peggy - you have the right attitude to succeed. My DS has 7 yrs. sober now & has other problems but not alcohol. As in all things, attitude is everything. Good luck & keep it up. I'm behind you all the way.

    Good luck Peggy.

Growing up with an alcoholic Grandfather I saw firsthand how destructive it could be on the those around him. I wish he had taken that first step like you are instead of apologizing for his behaviour on his death bed.

Anne, I grew up with an alcoholic father. He was loving but when he drank we disappeared to our rooms to avoid getting caught up in any discussions - sooner or later they would always lead into verbal abuse, very, very nasty verbal abuse. I used to wish he would just hit us instead but he never did. His father was an alcoholic and both physically and mentally abusive. I avoid arguments at all costs because I'm afraid of what might come out of my mouth. I loved my Dad dearly - he really was a riot and extremely smart. It just took those odd times that overshadowed all those happier ones. I don't want to lose my life to alcohol nor hurt my DH in any manner by hurting myself. I used to be extremely funny when I drank in my 20's but with chronic depression that changes over years and alcohol really becomes more of a depressive.
I'm tired of being 'sick' in my head. I can help my overall health by working on all aspects in my life. Give a choice - I choose life and love.

Thank you again everyone for your continued support.
    Cheers,
    Peggy

Peggy, Just remember, one day at a time. You only need to stay sober today. If possible, get to as many meetings as you can and get AND USE phone numbers! I won't wish good luck....because I don't think sobriety is about luck. I will wish you the willingness to work hard. I've been in the early day shows a few times, and now I'm over 12 years sober. But I only did it one day at a time. Thinking of you.

    Thank you again!

Patser I don't desire to drink on a regular basis - it's more when I get depressed or have bouts of depression that is when I usually want to get drunk to feel better, sleep, name one of a billion reasons - and when I do I get further depressed, angry at myself and wish to do harm. It hurts me, my family and those who care about me to see me behave like this.

I am waiting for my booking into a winter cognitive counseling program (18 weeks) and AA is nothing short of a 'godsend' for me. I feel so happy being there and talking about it with people who understand. This was my second meeting. They are not worried about going through details with me yet - just start attending on a regular basis. Also I now have the meeting book for the city so I can drop into any meeting when I want. It's not the drinking that is so hard for me at 'this time', more the staying positive and not letting my chronic depression surface or if it does I do something positive. Being around positive people really boosts my morale. Being on a spiritual journey to take better care and seek out help just feels so right I can't get over it. I always joke about winning the lottery but money doesn't buy happiness nor fix problems. My lottery winning is life right now.

I only wish I my mother were here to share my happiness but she's busy right now catching up with my father 'upstairs'. They have 24 years to catch up on (she passed away in June).

Life is good. I have no complaints - just gratitude.
    Cheers,
    Peggy
