If you go to Ross's on Tuesday, Senior Day, they don't honor the discount unless you ask them. Sign at checkout says you are to tell the cashier you want the senior discount.

Did the first clerk ask you for your Rite Aid card before he/she asked you for your phone number? I am normally only asked for my phone number if I need a card but don't have it with me. They can look it up with your phone number. If that's the way it happened, then the clerk asking for your card would've been your clue. Did you wonder what the clerk was asking you for your phone number for?

And then you said "forget it", which, to me, would've indicated that you were saying to forget the discount because you neither had your card nor could provide your phone number.

How did the 2nd clerk "take care of everything"? Did you give that clerk your phone number? Or did he/she just run a card of their own?

From what you've said, I don't think it's the fault of the clerk, although perhaps they could've gone a step further and asked what you meant. Perhaps they have people that don't really have a card and are just trying to get the discount without it. I know that wasn't the case with you, but perhaps they run into that.

How come you couldn't remember your phone number? I think I'd have wondered about that if I were the clerk.

If you are supposed to show a card to get a discount, generally I would think it is your responsibility to present the card not the salesperson's responsibity to ask you.

If there's just one price listed and no mention of having to show your card to get that price... then that's a store problem of advertising a price and management should be notified... it wouldn't be a sales clerk fault.

Those that don't ask, pay full price and the store benefits. We also are not supposed to ask if you'd like to buy more of a sale item to stock up....so you will come back and pay full price later.

All the sales tags at my Rite Aids clearly state the sale price is the card price.

What most of the public fails to understand is that "reward card" prices are subsidized by those that do not use them. If a certain percentage of the public did not pay the regular price (which is usually jacked up a bit higher than places that don't have the cards) it would not be good financial sense for the stores to have them at all.

You were offered 2 chances to get the sale price,one was to show your card and the second was to give the phone # attached to the card.

Had the employee just let you have the item at the sale price anyway the employee would in effect be stealing from the company he/she works for. So in this case the employee did right.

The first sales person was probably following store policy. It's not their job to remind you about your card and he did ask for your phone number. Once you said "forget it", did you really expect them to just give you the discount?

Thanks for your very good advice.it was my fault.The fact that I'm old made me forget my number after relocating from one state to another all within a three month period.Than that's my problem not his.I for got to mention two days be for I was in the store and when I came to the counter it took him quite a long time to get to the register because what he was doing was more important than waiting on a customer.Where I live there are Rite aids popping up like mushrooms so I can fined another and for get about what happen.I was wrong.I worked in retail for thirty years at Supermarkets General and they built their business on being nice to the customer and sometimes we went out of our way to be nice.God help this generation.

I don't think you need shoulder too much blame here. But given the situation you described, you went back, they completely rectified the situation. If it were me, I ONLY make a complaint to the management IF I give the store the opportunity to make things right and they don't. Since they did take care of things, I wouldn't make a complaint in this particular case.

Stores are funny with their discounts. We have one grocery store near us that offers senior discounts on Tues. If you look anywhere close to being a senior, the clerk just takes it off without asking. I've even had the clerk voluntarily take it off my order when I just said something about shopping for my mother (back in the days when I was too young to qualify myself). No card, and usually you don't have to ask, even. My husband's been completely white-haired for over 10 years. All through his 50's, from time to time, the counter help at fast food restaurants would give him the 'senior discount'--even though he wasn't really old enough for it, and hadn't asked for it. Often he wouldn't even realize it until he got home and looked at the receipt.

Please do not condemn ""this""generation. Too many of the senior citizens do that and what we did was probably as disturbing to our seniors. I just turned 79 and still quite active in Church, etc. I love to play hidden object games and do try to watch what I eat. Very little chocolate, sweets, coffee etc. I am still able to drive almost everywhere etc, and I love to be around all ages and people. The younger generation does have a lot to offer if we only respect and listen and not condemn.

Our Rite Aid asks for the card up front. So do the two local grocery stores.

They may not be required to, but they want to keep us happy so we don't switch to other drug stores and markets.

You were smart to go back and ask for them to do the transaction over with your customer discount.

At Kroger, if an obvious senior doesn't have a card, the clerks will ask the next person in line if they can use theirs. I've loaned mine several times.

Usually they have just forgotten it, like my 91 year old friend did a couple weeks ago when we were shopping. I have 2 sets, so I gave her one to use that day.

BTW, shortly after we got home, she drove over to my house to return it.

I like to save whatever I can, so I like having the reward cards, but some stores do make it complicated. CVS is one like that.

Goldy, I sometimes forget my phone number too, and I have nothing like a recent move to blame. It's not like we call ourselves everyday as much as we call family, right? It happens. (Usually I'm stumbling over figuring out whether I gave them my home phone, my cellphone or a made-up number!)

It seems like your experience was an innocent communication mixup (you thought he meant one thing, he thought another), though I wonder why the clerk didn't ask if you had your Rite-Aid card. (He didn't, right? Or did I misread?)

I have a whole keyring full of store cards -- multiple grocery stores, CVS drugstore, pet-supply stores (plus library cards for 2 counties). I keep it in my purse all the time. The proliferation of these drives me nuts! But I understand the marketing game, and for many of those stores, you get cash back (like from CVS) or special online offers or gas points (I think my highest was 40 cents off each gallon! Yay!).

Did the guy ask you? If he didn't, I would ask the store manager whether cashiers are supposed to ask, because sometimes customers' minds are on other things and just forget to pull it out. I wouldn't make a huge deal of it, since you eventually worked it out, but it might improve your opinion of their customer service. (Or you certainly could start going to a different Rite-Aid, but what if that guy gets transferred THERE? LOL!)

I agree that some places' customer service could use improvement (too many cashiers don't even say 'Thank you' anymore, even after I've thanked them, and the bagger), and then there are others like Sue's Kroger (on occasion, before I started to keep the cards in my purse all the time or when I hadn't yet changed purses after a trip, one of my grocery cashiers just swiped her own card, or an extra one she had at the register.)

Goldy, I forget my phone number all the time. I don't know why but I have had it for several years. When you forgot it that triggered you to leave and he let you do that without helping. I like store clerks who will do whatever it takes to help keep you happy and as a customer.
I actually put it in my cell phone and had to refer to it today. Today, I said God help me. I was not myself and somehow, although I took the long way to do everything, it got done. That sounds like your story. It will be good to go to bed and say good night to this day and crank it up tomorrow....or take a nap.

You admitted that it was your fault and then you accuse Rite-Aid of tricking you and making a fool of you and ask god to "help this generation". The clerk asked for your card, you didn't have it. He asked for your number, you didn't remember it and said "forget it". You came back and they adjusted the price for you. I think you are taking this WAY too personally and being paranoid. Let it go, there are better things in life to spend time on.
