The 'best' mop?

On vinyl/linoleum floors, have you found that a sponge mop gets the job done easier and faster? I've tried string mops and the mops that have the little strips that absorb water, but they seem to just push dirt around (I do sweep first).

My kitchen and bathrooms with this type of flooring are just to small to warrant a steam cleaner -- not enough floor space unimpeded by fixtures.

I really need to reduce my cleaning supplies, from sweepers (I have brooms as well as the Swiffer thing) to mops to cleaners. I'm tired of having to schlep multiple things through the house!

(I love microfiber cloths, but I think they need to be slightly damp to pick up dust instead of just moving it around.)

I git rid of mops and went to the Hoover Floormate years ago... best housecleaning move i ever made!

I like the O'Cedar microfiber cloth mop. I use a wringer bucket with it. My whole downstairs has to be mopped as it is very old tile. I have had a Hoover Floormate and did not care for it on my floor, so it is stored away, I have the Shark steam mop and did not care for it, I have the Swiffer wet jet and the Rubbermaid Reach mop. Those are okay and I use them for small mopping I like that I can put my own cleaners in those mops. I really dislike mopping as it hurts my back so much. Good luck with finding your perfect mop.

I've had a shark steam blaster and just recently got a ladybug. There's absolutely no comparison between the two. The Lady Bug was really expensive, but I use it every other day, it's VERY powerful and I expect for it to last for a long time. You can do a search here for Lady Bug or steam cleaners and get quite a bit of info. There was also a recent post called "Back to the bucket", I think it's on the second page (sorry, I'm not sure how to link a post) where I commented on the Lady Bug and what I've done with it. I have a hardwood floor and found this site: http://www.goclean.com/floorcareguide.htm Her mop is unique because it has a foam head with velcro hooks on it. You use a towel over the head to wash the floor. Then the towel goes right into the wash. It's great because there is no smelly mop lying around. Good luck! Thanks for all the comments! While I think the alabaster looks great with the granite, I am just flat out too lazy to keep it clean enough to look good. I refuse to clean the floor every day, I need a little bit of hiding power! I realize that, like wood, it will need to be swept almost daily, but I don't love it enough to comit to bright white. I love the Night sample, but probably too busy for that granite. I'd love to find it a home in another room if we love the cork though. I wish the sun would show up here, it's been overcast the whole weekend! I want to see what things look like in sunlight and post a few more pics of the final contenders. Island, haven't seen this tile locally anywhere. I did post online asking if they have a pic of the tile grouted or installed, hoping they do. There are shades of brown in the granite, just not prominent. You can see some in the sample on the left in the last batch of pics. May_flowers, I definitely want cork. For comfort mostly, but also durability, allergy issues, moisture resistance (definitely getting glue down), and environmental friendliness. We also considered bamboo, but so much of it is floating which is not great in a kitchen. Plus I do not under any circumstances want grout to clean. It's fine in the upstairs bath with such a small area and just on the floor, and I'm thinking the backsplash won't be too bad, but definitely not on the floor.

I noticed that you have potted plants sitting directly on the floor. These have the potential to ruin a wood floor. Many planters have a drain hole in the bottom to let out excess water. The same potential exists with a drainless pot that leaks or cracks. I suggest that your plants be placed on large plate like water catchers and be elevated off the floor on stands. your floor is beautiful. There's nothing like a hardwood floor. We have oak flooring in all our upstair rooms. I lightly stained those to a natural oak color and then coated with a bowling alley finish. The first time I finished a floor, I spent several hours on my knees and knuckles with a brush. And then I watched a pro do my neighbor's new floor. He did an entire living room in about 15 minutes and had me mentally kicking myself when I saw how easy it was. He did the whole job standing up! He started in one corner by pouring a puddle of finish being careful not to entrain air. I gasped as suddently poured about a quart of finish on the floor. He spread the liquid with a squeege and made a final smoothing pass with a thin, wide push-broom style brush. Of course, he was an expert in executing this daring manuver. A few more dumps of finish and spreading and he had applied 2 gallons to the floor and was done. Time: 15 minutes. Later, he told me the trick was to use techniques to avoid entraining air bubbles. If you got air bubbles, these have to be brushed out with a smaller conventional brush.

I prefer my Lieberman mop. The head is the kind that is washable and it has a piece that you pull down over the mop head to wring it out. Seems to do a good job for me. I used it on a floor that really needed mopping and I could tell the difference. I do change the water and use hot water with Armstrong Floor Cleaner in it(just a tiny bit). Grease comes up easily and as long as you change the water, I don't feel you are pushing the dirt around, if you have vacuumed first of course.

I like the WetJet and the microfiber mop. I have a "generic" one I got at Big Lots that works great. There's a slightly larger version out there made by Rubbermaid, O'Cedar and Sh-mop. Elastic band on the microfiber cover so you can change them and toss them into the washer. There's also cotton covers available. They work great for walls too. I alway moisten it and mop. Sometimes use a cleaner with it but for light touch ups and dusting a damp mophead works great.

I used my Swiffer with a thin micro fiber cloth. Works great!

I use ammonia/water for the cleaner. I keep a spray bottle with some ammonia in it (clearly marked!!!) and spray the cloth, or the floor directly if it is really dirty.

I can take off the micro fiber cloth and rinse it as needed during the mopping.

Works better than anything I have tried - and cheap!

Hands and knees on the kitchen or bathroom floor with a rage (that was supposed to be "rag") and some dish soap in warm water in a pan.

Usually using some of the orange cleaning rags that mechanics use ... that I rescued from the garbage ... when I worked security at the trucking co. garage when staff were gone ... and washed (with the really dirty stuff).

Let's see .. that finished twelve years ago: when I retired.
