Rechargeable Batteries Weaker?

Do I recall that rechargeable batteries are somewhat weaker than non-rechargeable ones? I tried using rechargeable AA's in the balance board for our Wii-Fit. It will work for a few minutes, then says the batteries are failing.

I found that the last pkg of rechargables do not last any time at all in our digital cameras...the hard way...graduation...
The others I have had for several years and used them a lot. I am thinking about taking them back to walleyworld and asking for an exchange...No matter how long you charge them, they take about 6-8 pictures...poof..dead...

I think that's probably true, Chisue, although my experience with them in digital cameras was far better than Pammiesue's.

You're kidding, right? Buy a new controller because of a backup battery? I recently had to replace my battery in my RB ESP LX controller and had a difficult time finding any rechargeable Nicad 9v battery anywhere. I finally went to a battery specialty store and got the replacement battery I needed, albeit not a Nicad. I think I paid around $14 for it. You might call RB service or check their website to verify.

Well, without knowing what the product is - Sony uses the "Walkman" name on all their portable audio and video players - and what those acronyms that you stated from the manual mean - it's still probably fine. The only thing to remember is that rechargeable batteries such as AA are usually 1.2 volts compared to alkaline 1.5 volts, so the product may give a low-battery indication sooner or not operate as long - so, just recharge them!

drawing a circuit diagram for the original and the new circuits would be a first step in figuring out what could be wrong. Other things - measuring the current draw for the original vs the new, checking for breaks in the solder, polarity.

The important item here is: What kind of batteries/cells are we discusing? Many camera use Ni-MH, size AA rechargeable batteries. This is a 1.2 V cell and can be used in any camera that accepts this type of battery. Its nominal voltage is 1.2 V and may get as high as 1.5 volts while recharging. Do not confuse with a lithium cell of the same size. The lithium cell is 3 volts. Although the words cell and battery are used interchangeable, in a strict sense they are not the same. A cell refers to a single cell and a battery is collection of cells. A 12 V, lead-acid car BATTERY is a collection of 6, 2 V CELLS connected in series. A 9 volt transistor radio BATTERY is a collection of 6, 1.5 V CELLS stacked in series inside the shell. However, I wouldn't belabor this point too much. If you go to a store, you'll find single cells under the battery sign.

Maybe it is the brand or charger? We too have found that to be so. Maybe if we write to the maker and ask why--or do they just want us to spend money on regular batteries.

They are not necessarily "weaker." Good performance is usually a question of buying quality, name-brand rechargeables. Also, they function best in certain applications. See the link below for more details

Here is a link that might be useful: Rechargable batteries

My rechargeables did well for 2-3 years but now they can barely hold a charge anymore. I think the older they get, the less they can do?

kudzu9 -- Thanks for the link. I see they ARE weaker -- 1.2 volts instead of 1.5 volts. That's what my brain was trying to recall! Four non-rechargeables would provide 6 volts of power; Four rechargeables, 4.8 volts.

I'm going to call Nintendo before I go out and buy non-rechargeables for the balance board. We've been using the batteries that came with it for three months. They were super-premium, not-for-sale-to-the-public Panasonics.

...it was that you have to re-program the balance board to 'sync' with the system when you replace the batteries. Why they can't TELL you that in the booklet or online, I don't know!

Anyway, I'm back to 'flying as a chicken' and 'catching fish as a penguin' as well as 'biking around the island'.

Rechargeable batteries can only be recharges so many times, then they die. It's like a laptop bettery, as time goes on the amount of time the battery will hold the charge gets weaker and weaker. The worst thing one can do is use a laptop plugged in all the time, with the battery installed. My techie geek told me to remove the battery....but of course I don't.
