Revlon and Nice and Easy are good for me

If you are going light blonde, I am here to tell you there is no hair color brand that leaves your hair soft and silky!

There are no oils left in your hair and you need to put a super oil treatment on your hair and sit under a dryer, but that doesn't do much, either. I can't speak about other hair colors.

I use a ash blond... Garnier Nutrisse. Leaves my hair almost too soft... it has a little thing of oil that gets mixed in with the color.

Clairol Nice & Easy for me, leaves my hair soft and gives lots of highlights.

Loreal preference (only preference though) for me.

Several have suggested to me that I try the color at the 99 cent store so I did. You have to buy your own conditioner, as it is not included but then we all have conditioner don't we. I can't tell the difference in it and any of the other brands I have tried.

L'Oreal Excellence, 8G. :) It leaves my hair nice and full of body and it lets the natural highlights show, after a few washings. I recently went back to 7G and don't like it as well as the slightly lighter look of 8G.

I'm actually looking to dye a medium brown color... but I find if I just color brown it sometimes looks one dimentional and fake so I'm not really looking for blond streaks... just some natural looking lighter or darker brown tones.

I have used Natural Instincts -- the kind that is temporary for a few dozen washes -- when I start seeing a few too many strands of gray.

I have found it hit or miss. That last color (didn't write the name down) gave me too much of a red overtone on my very dark brunette (some say it's black but it isn't) hair.

I think looking for highlights out of a box is a tricky thing. I just don't think it looks natural unless someone is applying it for you, so make sure you have a friend who knows how highlights should be done.

For now, I think I'll let the pros do the highlighting part, if that's my goal. Costly, yes, but less of a risk in my hands!

I know... I usually get my color (and hi-lights) done at a salon... I just thought maybe boxed hair color had improved a bit since I last used it. It seems like I hear of advertisements of boxed color with hi-lights but I never really heard of specific reviews to know which, if any, worked.

I do use the root touch up between salon visits and I like that. It's just the last time I colored out of a box --It was some grey coverage one and it fried my hair. I'm skeptical to try boxed color again but I just don't have the time to always fit in a scheduled appointment.

The only way to highlight is to lighten some of the hair before toning. The only way to lowlight is to add a darker shade over some of the hair. That is impossible to do with one shade out of a box or even at the hairdressers.

I have my hair done at the hairdressers. I am another big fan of root touch-up. Gets me through those last weeks between appointments.

But if you have highlights now they will not be as dark as the rest of your hair if you color from a box and may still show a bit. But after the first time I would think the color would cover them all.

I use the root touchup kits, but otherwise go to a salon.

I stopped coloring my hair years ago. Now it's a mix of light brown and gray. In the right light, the gray looks like highlights.

In an aside, how do you tell friends that their hair color looks ridiculous? Two friends, who don't know each other, both in their 70's, both use red. Fake copper-penny red. Both look silly.

Or a new mirror? Yes, they are both dear friends, and I know I can't say anything. Maybe I can gift each with a new mirror for Christmas?

Sushipup, are they male or female? I have seen men on television who dye their hair a blondish red when they get older and they don't look good in my opinion but maybe they feel better doing this than having grey hair. It is the same idea as men who wear hair pieces.
