Airlines changed our (perfect) Xmas flight times

USAir cancelled our earlier Xmas day direct flight putting us on the now only non-stop of the day at 6:15PM arriving at 8:20PM. Original direct was an 11:30am, arriving at 1:20PM. We have the option to choose flight times at no charge that better suite us. They are:

6:25am Philly to 8:08 Charlotte (72% on time record)
11:20 Charl to 12:18 New Orleans 3 hr, 12 min layover

or

8:20am Philly to 10:13am Charlotte (97% on time record)
11:20 am Charl to 12:18 New Orleans 1 hr, 7 min to make connecting flight

Considerations: Not sure if the 1 hr, 7 min. connection is enough time from gate to gate in Charlotte (never been) as the plane could potentially arrive late and lingerers getting off the plane at a snails pace. We are fast walkers though. If we miss the 1 hr connection, the next flight out of Charl is 2:35PM. Not sure what weather will be like in Philly late December. We "might" check a bag and have a small carry on. Not crazy about waking at 3:30am, but doable, if we take the earlier flight. Do not know if the "on-time" flight records really mean much. Would like to get to our destination mid-day to enjoy part of the HoliDAY there and maximize our trip. This is a holiday vaca; DH/I are not visiting anyone there. Not interested in getting an allowed refund since all is booked and I got a great price on the RT tickets.

Need to decide before seats disappear. Thoughts? Thanks.
