ACORN Catalog?

Anyone ever receive it or bought from it. On the web site there is a disclaimer to any organization by the same name. The seem to feature British type gifts etc. Marie

I got an Acorn catalog in the mail yesterday, thumbed through it and put it in my recycle box. I've heard of Acorn stairlift company. Apparently they are not related.

Don't know about them, but Acorn slippers are my very favorite ones. They've gotten a little pricey, though, IMO, for slippers. Wish I could find them somewhere on sale.

Sheila, I spoke to my son and he is bringing a DVD player and hooking it up for me this weekend. If I know my son, it will have bells and whistles...LOL but like you, I doubt I'd ever use the recording feature. He recently brought over a Samsung cellphone with camera, text and image etc. when all we wanted was a simple device to carry into garden with us for emergencies like our old cellphone. But it-IS-lighterweight and so tiny. So now I'll be set to enjoy Lilo's film and then join Netflix. I watched Michael Apted's documentary "49 Up" on PBS last evening. Want to go back and rewatch the "7Up" and others again. What a thought-provoking series! Andie..Brideshead Revisited is another I'd love to see again! I'm not familiar with Acorn and Signal catalogs...do they have online sites? You all have been so helpful...Thanks so much. josh

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to you~~ My family loves this pumpkin pie filling, so we always bake some in custard cups skipping the crust. It works with any type of winter squash and is delicious for breakfast or a snack anytime! We're always sad when our supply of garden squash is gone and we have to wait until next year. Combine in blender: 2 cups roasted squash 4 eggs 1 cup milk (or powdered milk equivalent) 1/2 cup - 2/3 cup brown sugar (lesser amt if squash is sweet) 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice OR (1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 3/4 tsp each ground ginger & nutmeg) 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 tsp vanilla Bake in custard cups in a shallow dish of water at 375 until set. Depending on size of cups will take 20-35 minutes. Will be puffed up, but shrinks as it cools. Variation: add 1/4 cup flour for a self crust pie & bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes. Will set up more as it cools. It cracks if you overbake. Can bake in a glass pie plate or a small rectangle to cut into squares. Serve with sugar cookies & your family will love it! When our kids were young we only used cinnamon and we increased to the full spice as they grew accustomed to spicier foods. I've made it with as little as 1/4 cup sugar or honey if we've also served it with sweetened cream. When the squash is sweet & you have the spices you don't notice the lower sugar amount. The easiest way to roast squash: pierce & microwave the whole squash for a few minutes cut in 1/2 & scoop out seeds with icecream scoop place cut side down on greased pan with sides (cake pan or jelly roll pan) Roast at 350 degrees for about an hour or until soft. Let cool for at least 30 minutes. Flip over & scoop out squash with a large spoon. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! Corrine

This thread is a year and a half old and is about a seed offer that is no longer active. You may want to actually start a new thread on your question. It would be more appropriate and far less confusing. Just a suggestion. I would have just sent you an e-mail but you didn't seem to have one on your member page.

Seed Starting Time Redux

Last year I started Peppers on March 1 and in my notes I wrote to start on March 11 this year with a transplant date of May 6. I am betting on a early transition to summer like weather this year so I'm bumping the starting and planned transplant dates up a week for everything. A small gamble yes but holding peppers an extra week is much easier than holding Tomatoes IME. Last year transplanting tomatoes early on April 23 really paid off because when we had a heat wave in early June it shut down fruit set for at least 3 weeks. I am going to start a new thread called 'Gardenweb Chat - March 2017' for the new month to replace this one since it is getting pretty long.

Got an Acorn catalog today. Have been getting them for several years now and always look forward to them. A nice selection of more upscale gift items compared to the usual flood of catalogs this time of year. I have ordered from it, found the quality of everything to be better than average.

Flamey, have you looked online at the Sierra Trading Post? They have Acorn footwear on sale sometimes. I bought a pair of Acorn shoes on sale for $26 last year.

They're the people who produce a lot of the British mystery series that are shown on PBS - Midsomer Murders is one. I got one yesterday also -it's rather like the PBS catalog - full of gifts and videos of their shows.

Acorn Media Group also has the Acacia and the Athena catalogs. The link below gives a brief outline of the company. Time magazine called it " chief curators of the best Brit TV."

I think it's unlikely that this catalog/TV streaming business is worried about the stairlift company or the slipper company.

A few years ago, there was a congressionally funded voter registration/community organizing group whose acronym was ACORN. It was the victim of a video sting by at least 2 conservative activists. In the end, it was forced to close up shop because its funding dried up.

Here's the Wikipedia entry on all that...

But the Acorn e-mail alerts and online catalog reminds me a lot of the Signals catalog, when it comes to British knickknacks, jewelry clothes, but with a lot more DVDs. It also has TV streaming of British shows (I haven't looked into the price of that).

I fished my Acorn catalog out of the recycle box. If anyone is interested, their phone number is 1 888 870 8047 and address is Acorn, P O Box 1670, West Chester OH 45071-1670. They also have an internet catalog available on acornonline.com. I am not selling for Acorn or anything, just giving contact information if anyone wants.
