ACORN Catalog?

Anyone ever receive it or bought from it. On the web site there is a disclaimer to any organization by the same name. The seem to feature British type gifts etc. Marie

I got an Acorn catalog in the mail yesterday, thumbed through it and put it in my recycle box. I've heard of Acorn stairlift company. Apparently they are not related.

Don't know about them, but Acorn slippers are my very favorite ones. They've gotten a little pricey, though, IMO, for slippers. Wish I could find them somewhere on sale.

Whoo, glad to hear your dishes arrived safely. I'm sure you will enjoy them, Luvs. BTW, I got a new Pfalzgraff catalog today. I thought of you when I saw their acorn salt and peppers. Seem kind of pricey to me compared to the others... but, then, I don't really know. They also have dishes with acorns. I really like the ones you have, and your pitcher. Just about any (acrylic) spray paint will work, Chery. You need to visualize how the wreath will look with various 'finishes' of gold paint... flat (matte), semigloss, gloss (shiny), and I even have a can that looks like gold chrome - very shiny! Here's an idea... spray it all with your choice of gold, then place it flat on a table and gently spray it with a white from an angle just above the top (hanging point) of the wreath. Just a heavy misting from the one direction only, and at a low angle. It would look like snow has fallen on the gold acorns! This is a little tricky to get just right, so if you decide you'd like this look, try it with a sample first. I think you can even buy 'snow spray' also. But then again, perhaps one shouldn't snow the acorns (gild the lily) - LOL!! Whatever you and your daughter decide, I bet it will be spectacular! Please post pictures for us to see!!

Hi, odiegirl. We are maybe 3/4s of the way through. One major thing that is not done is the doors, and that is my fault. I haven't yet placed the order because I want to be absolutely certain we won't have to tweak anymore cabs which would throw off my door measurements. The kitchen is up and running, though, and I am thrilled how much more functional it is--even though we still have a bit left to do. I will post pictures when all is said and done. I know what you mean about getting started. Really, it took a while for us to get going--even after DH knocked the wall down between the kitchen and dining room. I kept going over my plan obsessively. (I wish I would've found this site and Ikeafans while I was designing our space!) I started buying things and storing them in our garage. I called it "gathering acorns". Finally last fall, my husband said, "Well, let's do this thing!", and we basically stripped the kitchen and started plodding away. Once those very first cabinets were hung, I was eager to really dig in. It really helped to see progress. Electrical work is very necessary (hubs is an electrician), but it isn't very visual, so it didn't seem as if we were getting anywhere. For quite awhile. It was a long winter. ;^) Have you been playing around with the IKEA planner? That is what started the ball rolling at our house. Once we decided that we were going to do "something" to the kitchen (though the idea to do a complete remodel came later), the wall came down and there was no turning back. I am very excited to finish this loooong project. :^) Are you looking at a complete remodel or just a "sprucing up"?

Has anyone eaten chinkapin acorns or shellbark hickory nuts?

BBlood, I'm late to the party. Chinkapin oak acorns have the highest fat content of any of the white oak group. Still, you're gonna have to hull, grind and leach them to remove tannins. Otherwise, they're relatively bitter, like most acorns straight from the tree... and they're quite small, compared to many other acorns. Shellbark hickories... good! Large nut, with fairly thick shell; I have a hard time believing that Donna R's little Reed's Rocket pecan cracker can even begin to crack one - but she may have an exceptional hickory - I have a couple of really thin-shelled shagbark selections that I can crack with a Rocket... but have never seen a shellbark that you could even begin to crack with one. A hard-shell nutcracker, like Kenkel or Mr. Hickory... designed for use on black walnuts and hickories is your best bet. Stay away from cheap Chinese knock-offs... I've seen some copies of the Master Cracker that broke the first time folks tried to use them on a real nut.

Got an Acorn catalog today. Have been getting them for several years now and always look forward to them. A nice selection of more upscale gift items compared to the usual flood of catalogs this time of year. I have ordered from it, found the quality of everything to be better than average.

Flamey, have you looked online at the Sierra Trading Post? They have Acorn footwear on sale sometimes. I bought a pair of Acorn shoes on sale for $26 last year.

They're the people who produce a lot of the British mystery series that are shown on PBS - Midsomer Murders is one. I got one yesterday also -it's rather like the PBS catalog - full of gifts and videos of their shows.

Acorn Media Group also has the Acacia and the Athena catalogs. The link below gives a brief outline of the company. Time magazine called it " chief curators of the best Brit TV."

I think it's unlikely that this catalog/TV streaming business is worried about the stairlift company or the slipper company.

A few years ago, there was a congressionally funded voter registration/community organizing group whose acronym was ACORN. It was the victim of a video sting by at least 2 conservative activists. In the end, it was forced to close up shop because its funding dried up.

But the Acorn e-mail alerts and online catalog reminds me a lot of the Signals catalog, when it comes to British knickknacks, jewelry clothes, but with a lot more DVDs. It also has TV streaming of British shows (I haven't looked into the price of that).
