Remember watching your favorite tv shows and thinking back to when they seemed to get dumb?

What were some of your favorite shows and when did you think they should have "called it quits"?

That's what's known as "jumping the shark" which refers to a Happy Days episode when the Fonz was water skiing and jumped a shark. The show had already started to lose ratings before that.

I watched all of LOST and at least once a season we'd declare that "it had jumped the shark."

I just read an article in the paper about when the Fonz jumped the shark. I'll have to check the link you posted as well.

In some ways you and I have had similar problems. I am not religious. Perhaps you are putting too much reliance on your religious leanings to show you how to solve your problems ? Just a thought. Anyway..my home life has improved a lot, because we moved out of the destructive home life we were heading for. We bought a vastly smaller house, in the city, with a tiny couryard. In doing the move, we have reduced our financial outgoings, there is less housework, gardening etc. The are cafes, art galleries, parks, people, communities, just out the door. We walk everywhere. We do things together we enjoy ! I guess I am saying - sometimes if you change your circumstances things can be so different, and new challenges present themselve. In doing that, your focus on the difficulties that you are experiencing now, fade into the background. Or you can see things from a different perspective. I realized that my DH was never going to be a person who "did things around the house" and I became resentful, that I was doing it all. Perhaps some lateral thinking on your part might help you. You don't want to plod on in your life and become bitter and resentful. Sure you can see better ways for your DH to relate to your children, but don't become a "policeman" who picks faults in his fathering. I could see glaring faults in the way my DH related to our children, over the years, but I guess they have grown up now, and we often sit and talk about what went wrong when they were younger. He knows he did things wrongly and has made ammends. Perhaps your DH might relfect on that one day. Tracystoke says your problem is not a serious one. Perhaps a better way to look at it - is that the problem is "fixable", it has the potential to be "fixed". I will stop rambling now. Good luck with it all.

Hey Donaleen, Schoolhouse, AlexKitchen and all the rest -- are any of you still here? *I'm* not! I nipped back onto gardenweb to find the name of this series to give to the mother of a friend who was a terrific gardener in her day and had one of the first gardening or kitchen TV shows I think? She didn't have a TV... ;) Sadly, when I click on all these links ... gone. It says they're removed for copyright infringement by BBC. So I'm wondering: why do they not release the videos for sale and not permit them to be sold? I guess I probably know the reason, someone from the series, perhaps Ruth Mott or her family? ...likely has some copyright issues and BBC cannot release them. I know that happened with Alistair Cooke's stuff. But I can't find the series anywhere! The wartime kitchen series is on utube and the victorian kitchen and garden is, but not the victorian kitchen! I'm wondering whether anyone has any information or links to this series that still works. It really was such a wonderful series. The reason I even thought of it was because of that section about the mushrooms that were grown. A friend visited with a housegift of a block of fungus that you water and out of it grows mushrooms -- it's really, really wild. So fast and weird and strange and beautiful and slimy they are! I was reminded of the series. Thanks any for whatever functional links anyone might have....

I never saw The Avengers when originally broadcast, but I enjoyed watching some of the episodes on DVD. Diana Rigg was amazing. I find that while I have fond memories of some shows, I don't enjoy them when I try to watch them today. My favorite series will probably always be The West Wing. I have the digital version and when I want some relaxing downtime, those are the episodes I like to watch. That series was an almost perfect blending of actors, writing and directing where heavy, serious topics were leavened with the quirky humanity of the characters. Another show that I wish would become available in digital format is Reasonable Doubts with Mark Harmon and Marlee Matlin. I don't know if I would still like it, but I'd sure love to have the opportunity to view the episodes again.

pillog, I hear ya about the real political candidates. Fools, bullies, and jerks. Not all, but seriously, is this the best we can do? I agree that Alicia is no worse by a long shot, but really, besides being the real power (and charisma) between her and Peter, she's just a very beautiful face. Those early years were fantastic when she was recovering from Peter's betrayals and coming up through the ranks of Lockhart/Gardner. And Will. My friend thought he was a rat, but I loved him. So did Alicia. And now that she's risen to the top and beyond, what's left that's plausible? The quirky judges and courtroom scenes are fun, but the drama's gone. It happened to The West Wing and I hate to see it happening here. Although that new guy, the one who took Kalinda's place, is really cute.

I liked Don Knotts - and the show was only about 3
years old when he was brought on, and it went many
more.

I thought Suzanne Somers ruined the show, and the
girl after her made it even worse.

I agree with you on Happy Days -- tried to revive
a dying show when people outgrew it, I think.

AFAIC most of these "reality" and "competition" shows along with "talk" shows have toothbites in them already. They should have been dumped before going on the air.

The same with All In the Family, after Mike & Gloria left. They brought in a little girl who I thought was annoying and then took in a roomer, a gal, who I thought had some funny exchanges with Archie, but just no the same as the original cast. That little girl, Olivia they brought in to have a younger kid, Rudy got older on the Cosby show, was also irritating, and I quit watching about that time.

I liked Don Knotts too and thought he was a great addition to the show. I never cared for Suzanne Sommers or any of her replacements.

Happy days was a great show, but they dragged it out for way too long. I always thought it was funny how Ritchie's brother Chuck disappeared on episode two.

My favorite show was/is Seinfeld and while I was devastated when the show ended, I thought the timing was right and that they left on a high note. Same for Mary Tyler Moore and Everybody Loves Raymond.

I agree with the one's on SamKaren's list and All in the Family.

But some that ended way to early in my mind are:

Northern Exposure
M*A*S*H
NYPD Blue
Murphy Brown
Laugh-In

When they change the name of the show you know it's gone too long. Archie Bunker's Place had no place on TV. After Edith died, the show died. The kid wasn't Edith. M*A*S*H had 1/2 the cast leave so they became AfterM*A*S*H and all the doctors couldn't revive it. All the talk shows, fake doctors giving advice and such have gone too long too. And really, how many trailer courts are there in the hills to supply the Springer show?

Then there are shows that went out while still on Top-Gunsmoke, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett. They rewmained popular to the end-no sharks.
