Question about calorie intake

I'm trying to cut back calories so I can lose weight, or maintain the weight I'm at.

Obviously if you take in too many calories, you'll gain weight. I've also heard that you shouldn't take in less than 1000 calories a day, because your body will go into starvation mode and you'll gain weight.

My question is, what's the balance between too many and too little calories? It feels like a lose-lose situation.
