Possible "nor'easter on steroids" for next week

I hope this is another of those instances where the weather forecasters are going for the dramatic sound bite. Doesn't really sound like it, though.

Possible huge storm for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic next week

I sure hope those in that area do not get any bad weather. No one needs it. Stay safe and dry!!

Alisande, I like that weather map. Sandy is a category 2 hurricane right now, which is enough to cause damage to trees and could cause power outages. Here in Florida, we are getting those random gusts of high wind every once in a while. And that's with Sandy still being just north of Cuba! Stay safe KT'ers in the NE!!

I'm not ready either and I'm hoping I'm far enough south that it misses us. Tonight our local meteorologist gave our region only a 30% chance of some sort of snow or snow/rain mix on Tuesday. (Maybe on Monday, but I hope not, because that's the night of Marietta's combination lighted holiday parade, Christmas Tree lighting, arrival of Santa, and kickoff of the holiday food drive for our local food bank.) We don't need rain or snow interfering with all that activity! I have a gazillion boxes of new Christmas lights and other decorations piled up in the weight room awaiting Sunday's "let's decorate the fire truck for the parade" party. I'd hate to do all that work and have snow/sleet or whatever cancel the parade....or just enough rain falling that families won't bring their kids out to see it. Oh, and we had freezing rain mixed with regular rain on Thanksgiving Day this year, but we weren't at home to see it fall. It didn't stick anyway because the ground was warm and the air was hovering right around but not below freezing. I'd forgotten about that stuff. I enjoyed the snow last year. All my life I wanted a "white Christmas" just like in the song of the same name and, finally, at the age of 50, I had one in 2009. It wouldn't bother me if we have no snow this year, but based on what the forecast is showing, I think we'll likely have some this year and it seems like it is trying to start early. Some final rambling thoughts :) I want this space to be as functional as possible and open. 1. We're going to put a pocket door to have the option to close off the foyer if needed. This will allow us to close off the entire room, but still leave us the ability to open it for the pass through to foyer. Best of both worlds in my opinion :) 2. I think I'm really liking this "drop zone" space by the garage entry door. It will be great for my purse, charging cell phone and having some sort of cute/small mail sorter on the countertop. 3.Below the sink we can store detergent, stain remover etc for laundry needs. 4. If theres room I'd like to have an open space in a base cabinet to put a nice laundry basket (to bring clothes to put away in). Dirty hampers will be built ins as part of the master WIC (the bag is removable to bring to W & D). No dirty clothes will go in laundry area. 5.The broom closet will store the swiffer, steamer and wet & dry swiffer cloths. The hanging rod to air dry a few items. 6. The upper cabinets are for extra storage misc things. 7. Bench and hooks for jackets and bookbag. Cubbies above for hats, scarves and gloves. 8. Closet with double hanging will store winter, fall and guest coats as well as my boyfriends work bag can go on the floor in here. I'm getting excited!!!

dbarron, It sounds like you can grow many interesting plants there. I'm still dreading this week's rain. I don't think the big huge rainstorms can miss us forever. Larry, I am sorry your area still is so wet. Ours is almost as bad. Wet clay is so unforgiving. If I didn't have raised beds, I've have no garden plants surviving at this point, unless I had planted rice. My tomato plants that are planted at grade level have yellowing leaves as well---I know they are drowning. The ones in raised beds are in better shape, but they won't be if the rain keeps coming. At least twice before, we have had a monthly rainfall total of 24+" and twice before, or maybe three times before, we have had a one-day total of 12+", and all that has occurred either in April or May. I think the most recent 24" May rainfall was in 2015, and it flooded the basement of our county courthouse, which was built in 1907-1910 and previously (but no longer, I think) had records storage in the basement---because I guess no one ever thought it would flood. Those were some pretty bad times for a gardener, but this nearly non-stop rain that now is in its 7th or 8th month is even worse. I'd like to be happy that our once-dry pond is full again, but that's hardly an achievement for it considering our entire property has been pond-like for months now. Crawdads are reappearing, likely chased out of the river bottoms by too much water flowing down the Red River. We have beavers on the creek again, a sporadic occurrence that happens only in the wettest years. The dogs can hear the beavers (I cannot) working down around the creek and bark at them. All. day. long. Our dogs are not barkers in general unless there is something around like coyotes, squirrels or, apparently, beavers around annoying them. Other than the drowning plants in the garden, it is extremely hard to keep up with all the mowing when it constantly is too wet to mow and everything is growing like weeds---especially the weeds. I'd love one warm, sunny week with absolutely no rain, but I bet that doesn't happen until at least June. As long as El Nino persists, we're likely to continue to see above-average rainfall. Dawn

* No advantage in transplanting unless you have reason to think the plant is rootbound. If you think the soil/root mass can be lifted from the container intact (as a unit), go ahead and pot up into a slightly larger clay pot or a strainer/ colander/ pond basket of appropriate size. Pond basket: * Ultimately, full sun is best, and at this time of year a few hours of artificial light in the early morning or evening would be helpful. Do make sure the plant is acclimated to full sun, or it can suffer sunburn (photo-oxidation). Damage might not be insect-related - hard to tell. Your plant won't divert energy to defend itself. Defense chemicals represent the plant's weakest energy sink, so they always gets short shrift, and defense chemicals are a byproduct of the plant's metabolic processes and come free of charge in terms of energy outlay. * I've settled on 16 hrs on, 8 hours off for my plants under LEDs. If you keep the plant indoors you could go to 18/6 if the light isn't super bright and heat isn't an issue. There is such a thing as a photo-saturation point at which photosynthesis flatlines, so too much light isn't good. * Blooms are often triggered by treatment with gibberellins, ethylene, and other products, along with a reduction in N, but I'm not sure you should go that rout or rely on blooms to increase the weight of your plant. BTW, growth is measured by the increase in the dry weight of the plant after complete desiccation, otherwise, plants with fleshy parts would have a distinct advantage, unless it's all marigolds to marigolds. Too, a plant's level of vigor is a genetic trait, a measure of it's ability to resist strain, so in this contest, if a variety of species are in play, the plants which are genetically vigorous will have a distinct advantage. Vigor even varies from seed to seed of the same species. Vitality is the measure of how well plants are able to deal with the the cultural environs you're able to provide. * Skip the grow mat unless temps are below 65*. Too much heat is counter-productive - especially at night when root temps should lag day root temps by about 10*F. Good luck! Al

Well that explains why the supermarket was full of 'older' shoppers this morning. It reminded me of all the panicked shoppers in this area who run out to buy milk, eggs and bread whenever a few inches of snow is predicted.

Looks like I will be nearly smack dab in the middle of this mess. Lucky me. The forecasters are calling Frankenstorm. To quote the news -- it's a storm that will go down in the history books. It's actually three storms all converging in one area -- a hurricane, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North.

We had a freak snowstorm this time last year, followed by a mild winter, so I hope this means we'll be getting another mild winter.

I like the way you think Dedtired. I hate the thoughts of this storm, I'm in NE Pa, but if we have to have it to get another mild winter I'll take it. Not that I have a choice.

I'm ashamed, I love hearing of impending severe weather phenomena! Not that I wish it on others, I love the extreme weather right here on top of me. The thunder, lightening, tornado threats! When the sirens start wailing I'm usually out in a one of the fields swooning!!

Of course the comes from someone who has NEVER really experienced a tornado. Proof enough that the good lord has pity on the dumbest among us. :/

Oops, please don't read that as wishing ill fortune on the northeast. Not my meaning all.

OnAHolliday, I'm sure the weather forecasters love people like you! LOL They can get so dramatic in their presentations.

I know what you mean, though. I used to find thunderstorms and major snowstorms exciting.....until I had to experience them alone, and be responsible for the house and pets all by myself.....and until the house down the road was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Plus in recent years the world has had a big increase in severe weather-related phenomena. I find it getting less exciting all the time. :-)

alisande I hope what you say is true.

The last Noreaster we had was something I didn't enjoy and don't want to have that experience again.

Some of the neighbors have gotten a bit hardened about these forecast as so many of them were predicted and then fizzled out. I hope this is the case here.

My friends are cruising from Boston to Puerto Rico and then flying back to Puerto Rico.

Does not sound good for my friends.

I'm glad you got back, too, Sleeperblues! I'm worried about friends on the New England coast. I love the ocean, but its power can be fierce. There's often a price to be paid for living near it.

I am petrified about this storm which is to come ashore in NJ area. We are in the bulls eye. I would exchange this for a bad winter any day. We have massive trees around our house , are to get 6-10` inches of rain and probably no power with election coming up, It's a total nightmare unless it changes course. The PERFECT storm.

well the cold front hit us here in North Houston today it is currently 53 which is quite chilly compared to our high 80 and 90 degree weather we have been having. IT is also gloomy dreary and rainy. I won't be getting out today.

I feel for anyone going through storms of any kind having lived through multiple hurricanes in Louisiana and multiple tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas I am NOT a fan of storms.
