Possible "nor'easter on steroids" for next week

I hope this is another of those instances where the weather forecasters are going for the dramatic sound bite. Doesn't really sound like it, though.

Possible huge storm for Northeast and Mid-Atlantic next week

I sure hope those in that area do not get any bad weather. No one needs it. Stay safe and dry!!

Alisande, I like that weather map. Sandy is a category 2 hurricane right now, which is enough to cause damage to trees and could cause power outages. Here in Florida, we are getting those random gusts of high wind every once in a while. And that's with Sandy still being just north of Cuba! Stay safe KT'ers in the NE!!

Seven out of the last eight storms bypassed Fullerton without dropping any significant rain. Today all we got was a mist type rain which isn't enough to penetrate even an eighth of an inch into the soil. Wish I could get some of your rain, I have had to water my garden and fruit trees with a hose for the last two months, and that was just after the so called "rainy season". But thanks to some good rain in early February we did get 14 inches so far this rainy season, which is a little over an inch more than the normal 12.86 inches per year. My concrete patio is almost dry even though it is mist raining because it is evaporating as fast as it falls.

Lee, You're welcome. When you used the word 'panic', I wondered if I should be panicking too. I'm glad to hear the answer is no. : ) It is a great relief that the Euro is backing off a bit on the freezing temperatures. Let's hope that the chances of frost start dropping too. I hope you have a great visit with your parents, and I hope the weather behaves itself so y'all can have a good time together without having to run for shelter. I can handle frost. Freezes worry me, even with row cover, but mostly because all the trees, shrubs, perennials, etc. are emerged and leafed out and I cannot cover the whole yard. My hollies (old and well-established) suffered massive damage when we went to 28 degrees, and normally that wouldn't happen. However, we'd been having a lot of days in the mid-80s or warmer, and nights in the 50s-60s, and the hollies had lots of new growth that wasn't conditioned to sub-freezing temperatures. On the other hand, Johnson Grass growing outside my garden fence and attempting to creep into the garden froze back to the ground. Of course it isn't dead, but at least it has been set back for a while. For future reference, to find row cover and frost blanket fabric in large enough sizes to cover anything you can envision, you can visit the website of Agricultural Solutions. That's where I find my frost blanket. I bought it in 12' widths, but they have it available in many widths---some of which are so huge that they clearly are aimed at commercial farms. Most places have it in only more narrow widths. I like the 12' width because you can cover a row of fairly tall (well, fairly tall for early in the season) plants with it. If you buy a roll they have it folded in half on the roll, which helps keep the shipping charges lower since it is a box a little over 6' long instead of 12' long. The very first row cover fabric I bought around a decade ago was 6' wide which sounds good, but really isn't. I was using it on 4' wide beds, so I couldn't cover a whole bed with it once the plants were any taller than 11-12". I've discovered that with row cover, wider is better, particularly since I grow in raised beds that are mostly 4' wide and often I have some plants that are knee-high to waist-high by the time the last threat of frost has passed in the first week of May. If the strong storms the next few days don't pound our plants into the ground or carry them away with the wind, we all might get to begin the month of May with gardens that are in pretty good shape. I like the idea of cooler temperatures. The longer we stay cool in Spring, the better the cool-season crops will produce, and the better the fruit set on the tomato plants. I did look at my Accuweather forecast the last couple of days since it goes out farther than the NWS forecast on the Norman webpage and farther than our local TV forecast, and it showed my lowest low next week of 43. Today that's been raised to 45. I'm starting to feel a lot better about next week's weather, but that doesn't mean I will become complacent and stop watching the forecast. Lots of those little microclimates in the Bay Area. Inland where I am is a lot dryer. We haven't gotten as much as other places inland... but I love the rain we have gotten! It's the snow and ice that helps the drought the most. Here's a good article on the current state of the CA drought. Please do not apologize for all the posts parker_31! They are so helpful!!! Of the paint samples I tried on poster board, we like SW Oyster Bay and Magnetic Gray the best --- but I'm not sure if either are exactly right. I see what you, raee_gw zone 5b-6a Ohio, are saying about the trim not necessarily being white because it's not very prominent. However, that is one thing we originally thought made our house more interesting :) since we don't have brick or stone. If we go with a more monotone scheme, I definitely like going lighter with trim... Oh man, all these suggestions are great! Still think I might keep the white triangle which is a big switch for me (I just don't know!) :)

Well that explains why the supermarket was full of 'older' shoppers this morning. It reminded me of all the panicked shoppers in this area who run out to buy milk, eggs and bread whenever a few inches of snow is predicted.

Looks like I will be nearly smack dab in the middle of this mess. Lucky me. The forecasters are calling Frankenstorm. To quote the news -- it's a storm that will go down in the history books. It's actually three storms all converging in one area -- a hurricane, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North.

We had a freak snowstorm this time last year, followed by a mild winter, so I hope this means we'll be getting another mild winter.

I like the way you think Dedtired. I hate the thoughts of this storm, I'm in NE Pa, but if we have to have it to get another mild winter I'll take it. Not that I have a choice.

I'm ashamed, I love hearing of impending severe weather phenomena! Not that I wish it on others, I love the extreme weather right here on top of me. The thunder, lightening, tornado threats! When the sirens start wailing I'm usually out in a one of the fields swooning!!

Of course the comes from someone who has NEVER really experienced a tornado. Proof enough that the good lord has pity on the dumbest among us. :/

Oops, please don't read that as wishing ill fortune on the northeast. Not my meaning all.

OnAHolliday, I'm sure the weather forecasters love people like you! LOL They can get so dramatic in their presentations.

I know what you mean, though. I used to find thunderstorms and major snowstorms exciting.....until I had to experience them alone, and be responsible for the house and pets all by myself.....and until the house down the road was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. Plus in recent years the world has had a big increase in severe weather-related phenomena. I find it getting less exciting all the time. :-)

alisande I hope what you say is true.

The last Noreaster we had was something I didn't enjoy and don't want to have that experience again.

Some of the neighbors have gotten a bit hardened about these forecast as so many of them were predicted and then fizzled out. I hope this is the case here.

My friends are cruising from Boston to Puerto Rico and then flying back to Puerto Rico.

Does not sound good for my friends.

I'm glad you got back, too, Sleeperblues! I'm worried about friends on the New England coast. I love the ocean, but its power can be fierce. There's often a price to be paid for living near it.

I am petrified about this storm which is to come ashore in NJ area. We are in the bulls eye. I would exchange this for a bad winter any day. We have massive trees around our house , are to get 6-10` inches of rain and probably no power with election coming up, It's a total nightmare unless it changes course. The PERFECT storm.

well the cold front hit us here in North Houston today it is currently 53 which is quite chilly compared to our high 80 and 90 degree weather we have been having. IT is also gloomy dreary and rainy. I won't be getting out today.

I feel for anyone going through storms of any kind having lived through multiple hurricanes in Louisiana and multiple tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas I am NOT a fan of storms.
