Do you get your house sprayed?

Only a few times have I gotten our house sprayed for pests. The last few weeks it seems like I find a spider a day. The spiders freak me out. I leave our porch light on nightly and my porch is covered in webs and spiders. I try to clean it, but that freaks me out too. The only thing I worry about the spraying is the chemicals and my kids(asthma). Do you get yours sprayed on a regular schedule? Should I or shouldn't I?

We once rented a house that would get invaded by ants. Millions of them. We had the house sprayed quarterly. They would spray around the outside of the house and inside the attached garage. Never saw a bug inside after they started the spraying.
Instead of leaving your porch light on all night, you might consider getting a motion detector light on your front porch. I really like mine.

We did once...No spiders or crickets or anything for over a year...it was wonderful...

This year has been terrible with crickets and spiders.TERRIBLE !!!

But we had a couple cold night and the crickets have all but stopped coming in. I wish I knew where they were getting in . Nasty noisey things.

Olpea, this fungal vs bacterial shot-hole is a complex issue. My belief is that both varieties are common in the east (and, I have been told this by some experts). However, people seem to only talk about the bacterial kind and it is the only thing listed in spray guides. So, my feeling is they are sloppily viewed as one disease in the east, and this greatly confuses the treatment recommendations. I am almost positive that I have the fungal form in my orchard since the holes tend to be more round-edged with that. I think I have some of the bacterial version as well but am not completely sure. In terms of overall spray recommendation I follow the west coast idea of a leaf fall spray for fungal spot but which east coast people do not mention, but I believe the repeated spring sprays of the east coast guides are good for either kind of shot-hole since rain events are horrible for either of them -- my round-holed shothole propagates like crazy onto the new leaves after a rain, and if there is no rain the new leaves stay clean. The west coast recommendations for fungal spot are not taking into account heavy spring rains since they don't have them. I am guilty of abusing this terminology myself since its a pain to go into a lengthy explanation each time, but most of the time the treatment is similar so I don't feel too bad about it. However you are correct that fungonil is only useful for the fungal kind. LL, I don't see any problem with that mix. Scott

I bought the 'SpotShot Battery-Powered Sprayer' from Rosemania 3 years ago. It has a 7-gallon capacity sprayer and comes with two different sprayer heads. It is mounted on a 2-wheel cart which is excellent for wheeling around and has 50-feet of hose and a very long wand for hard-to-get places. I paid $399 plus an extra $40 for longer hose. The wand is easy to handle and allows you to reach up to taller climbers and in awkward places to spray. What used to take hours can now be completed in 1.5 hours and then I'm off to other garden chores. The tank is easy to fill and clean; an added bonus. Best investment ever IMO...only had to replace the battery once in 2 years and I use it every 2 weeks. If you have alot of roses, I recommend this sprayer. Tina, it's impossible to seal every nook and cranny in a home. Even brand new homes. We live in Oklahoma, home of the Brown Recluse/Fiddleback. However, they are now across all of the USA. A person can lose a limb (rarely though) if bit by one. Their bites rot the skin. We have a brand new storm door in the front. Paid big bucks for it because it has an invisible screen, I just love that door! But...the rubber weather stripping under it, like on all outside doors, has gradually worn off. Just last year when they were remodeling, the guys put new weather stripping on the back storm door. And half of it has worn off too. I ordered some draft stoppers, so every time I leave one of the doors open with just the storm door exposed, I put them at the bottom to keep spiders from coming in. How does one seal the areas when they come from the pipes to the sinks? We have a septic system so maybe that's why they can crawl up the pipes. It was even on the front page of the OKC paper a month ago about how spiders are extremely bad here this summer. So you can't convince me that it's possible to seal everything in and around a house. We've sealed everything we can visibly see and we still get spiders. But when we spray inside, we hardly get any at all.

I recently had to deal with the next door neighbor of a renatl property I own. They called early in the morning when a tree fell in a thunderstorm across their driveway. They seemed oblivious to the fact that the portion of the tree on their land was their problem. I drove over and dragged the branch out of the way into the street. That weekend I cut up the branch, and felled the rest of the tree (a 30 year old Bradford Pear). I drilled the stump and applied herbicide since Bradford Pears are well know for sprouting from their roots. The herbicide needs to be allowed time to travel out to the roots to make sure everything dies. Neighbor has decided to sell their house, and hired a service to grind the stump on my property. I drop by on Wednesday to check that the brush has been picked up to find the stump ground. I have not bothered to do anything else to remove the small sprouts all over the place from the root system. It looks pretty bad, and they have commented once. I told them if they had not screwed around with someone else's property this would not have occurred, and if I caught them trespassing I would swear out a warrant. The tenant's have told me they have been a royal PITA for a long time, and will be happy to see them depart. They have a problem cleaning up after their dog. I would send the RE agent an estimate for the requested work, with a cc to the broker. Hopefully the agent has a short career.

I have before, but no one had asthma. This house must have been sprayed this summer? before we bought. I find dead bugs often.

But, there are also spiders coming in now. I just squish them.

I don't like them, but I dislike them not as much once they are squished.

I don't like using pesticides. We are being invaded by spiders in the yard this fall, but I don't find many in the house. They don't bother me. I just get them with a tissue and give them a marine burial.

In the yard I sweep away their webs and squish as many as I can. I know they are important to keep other pests under control, but I'm sure there will still be enough left to do that.

We have a monthly service come and spray. I think it makes a big difference.

We get our house sprayed inside and outside several times a year by two different companies.
One company is a pest controller and they will come back if we see any kind of a bug. The
other comapny is our lawn care company and they only spray outside. I do not have asthma myself
but two of my children do along with Makayla and Kaden having breathing problems. Plus, we
have two cats and one dog and it does not bother them either. The spray has never bothered any of them.
You can call the company that you are thinking about using and they will explain everything to you about the chemicals they use.

NO never a whole house spray, insects don't bother me, Spiders are good insects, eat other insects but I'm sure you have been told this many times.

Now that being said, years ago treated for carpender ants, they were in the kitchen sink and dishwasher looking for water, so also could have be in the framing "eating" the house. Dog and I were away for a few days so house could be treated and aired.

If I have an severe regular ant invasion do treat the area where they are, but not the whole house.

I have allergies can't stand the odor of chemicals, so it's a very localized treatment for me. Even take care with everyday "soaps" and cleaners I use, I'm that crazy woman in the store, sniffing at bottles, hate it when they say "new" fragrance,

Yes, we do. We're on a quarterly schedule with Terminix. When it has rained a lot we have a tendency to get ants around the perimeter of our house and they occasionally try to "tunnel" through! LOL

We just buy the stuff at Lowe's and do it ourselves 3-4 times a year (inside and out).

We have a service that comes out every three months. They only spray the outside. Made a huge difference in the indoor spider population!

No, I don't like to breathe poison. Spiders don't bother me, and that is the only "bug" I ever find in here. I don't have roaches. I do have a few geckos that have moved in, and I guess they eat the spiders because there are less spiders now than there used to be.

check with the kids doc before doing anything. it's just not worth the sleepless nights or breating treatments...

i took the pressure washer to some of the worst webs...

I have a quarterly service that comes and does a GREAT job. I was asking about spiders, and they told me since spiders don't "groom" they can only be killed on contact. I don't know about that, but after they sprayed the last
time, I haven't seen any spiders at all. Or any creepy crawlers or mice or .... Kathy

I set off three flea bombs in my house every fall. I never see any spiders afterward. And my pets are good all winter.

I work for an exterminating company, actually I am a lisenced PCO, and I have never had my house sprayed or sprayed it myself. I only see an occassional spider, a cricket in the basement now and then and a couple of centipedes in the basement last spring.

If your kids are school age, just have your house sprayed after they leave for school and by the time they get home it will be fine. We always caution anyone with any kind of breathing problems that they shouldn't stay inside while the house is being sprayed because the chemical can be airborn. Even though the chemical we use is low odor and very low toxicity-I don't know how to spell it and I have trouble saying it too. Anyway it is safe or so they say.

Nope, I have cats, and prefer not to spray
chemicals around them. It's normal for spiders to
come inside, when the temperatures get cooler.

I have had Orkin spray monthly for over the 20 years I have lived here. I was cutting back one year, and cut Orkin out of the budget. After spending one hundred bucks on do it yourself sprays, and having more tarantulas, mice, water bugs and snakes than I can count on both hands and feet, I happily invited Orkin back in my life. Took about 8 weeks for me to succumb. We have a lake out back, and the bugs, reptiles and animals here are nothing to mess with.
I do love the Geckos out on the front porch at night, they are doing a great job too.

We had a great service in CA that the chemicals were herbal based. Never had a problem, even with dog/cats. It really did not destroy the "good bugs" like lady bugs and some spiders. But it did hit the ants good. Western Exterminator in CA in the LA area.

When I moved into my new apt.,there was tons of spiders.It wasn't until I pulled the covers back and found 2 of them in my bed did I freakout.I bought these things you plug into the wall and it's suppose to get rid of mice ,spiders ,fleas , mosqiutos(sp?)and also flies.Since I've had them only one spider have I seen.I bought them at Target,I think they were 2 for around $15.00.Sorry to have told the spiders if they couldn't pay rent they couldn't live here,yet alone share my bed.I really don't think so!
