Postcrossing?

Would like to find out how you like it? Problems? Fun?
I have signed up, but not followed thru. OK to use home address or should I think about a PO Box? Yes they are expensive, but might be safer. I live in a asst. living and really don't want """strangers""" looking me up here.

I have read about it, but don't really think I would participate.
It is bad enough that many people can get our email addresses through various ways, but I don't want as you said "strangers" to have my home address. Who knows who might just show up at your door?

The iceberg picture looks like a a side view of a woman reclining in the water. At the left you can see her white arm reaching down into the water. If you don't want all contacts transferred you would probably be better off just selecting the contact information for each individual and copy and paste it into the new address book. I have a few of my email accounts that way, no need for all of my contacts there. You can set up group contacts and just select the group. 1) Pet. A lot depends on what you consider a "splurge". I consider it something you do or have that you don't really need to survive. Something you could easily get along without. I don't consider vet bills a splurge, I consider them required for responsible pet ownership, however pet ownership is a splurge. 2) DSL internet. Although many would argue they couldn't live without the internet, I'd suggest they could. There's free internet available but I do enough research that I recover the cost of a lot of my internet cost so the splurge isn't that great. 3) Bottled water and tea. I have problems with this one, since technically it's a "splurge", but OTOH, I generally save way more by carrying it with me so I don't splurge on beverages when I'm out and about. So 10ÃÂ¢ a bottle for spring water often saves more than the cost. That wouldn't really be a splurge. Probably should be considered an investment yielding dividends! Given that a couple purchases, sometimes even one purchased beverage somewhere can offset a month's worth of spring water or more. On second thought, I'm striking that one. That *is* a money saver. 3) Occasional meal out. I don't do the fancy meals out. $10 is usually going to include meal (unless I make the 5 disappointments mistake! LOL) and tip since I often forgo a fountain beverage unless it's at the buffet where I get coffee, tea, milk and pop or other drinks all for one price should I so choose. Yeah, that's more of a splurge by definition than the spring water. When it comes down to it, cars, even electricity, computers, cell phones, TVs, ipods, etc, etc are all splurges for most people. Hiring people to do things is usually a splurge too.

If I figure that something might interest me but don't want a potential deluge so don't want to provide one of my active email addresses ...

... the requester gets "junkmailsystems@yahoo.ca".

It may be a "was" address, as ones that aren't visited by the holder for a substantial period get closed, so it may have suffered that fate.

I've been postcrossing for a few years now. I am chuckling at the fact that "strangers" will have your address and might show up at your home. I honestly think you're being a bit too paranoid. Most of my cards come from China, Russia, Finland and Germany. The chances that one of those people is going to show up at my home are pretty slim.

Honestly if it bothers you just don't participate in postcrossing.

Casey, I'm sorry to say that it can be a terrible mistake to exchange home addresses with strangers. I strongly advise anyone to think long and hard about it before doing so.

Try looking up yourself or a friend at whitepages.com.

Homeowners' names and addresses are a matter of public record. This website (and others) list names, addresses, phone numbers, and (at least in my case) the names of the family's kids. My phone number was always "unlisted", that's irrelevant now.

The source of their records seem to go beyond what the County Recorders have. Maybe it's also voting records, DMV records, etc etc ? Those wishing a bit of privacy have historically used PO Boxes for mail, so that home addresses are harder to find.

For renters, it's probably a different story. Otherwise, to give someone your address is nothing they couldn't easily find out on their own, using only your name and some knowledge of your age and a rough notion of where you live.

Ah, now I know, thanks Joann.

I suppose there could be issues with some stranger knowing about where you live, if they suspect you are rich or well-off or have something they want and if you feel vulnerable. In this day and age, reading stories in the news, I guess it's safer to err on the side of caution, or do all your socializing with strangers thru the computer. (Not that computer "friends" couldn't find you, also.)
