Any recommendations for new vacuum cleaner

My Sears canister vacuum cleaner, that I've had for years, is dying. I prefer the canister type and would like to hear your recommendations Just the latest household item to bite the dust. -( Already replaced the dryer and kitchen range.

If you do a search here on the KT you will find a few threads started not long ago asking the same question with lots of responses.

I bought and love the Shark lift away navigator pro, shark makes several versions including canister. This is the best working vacuum I have owned and I have a sears canister and a kirby. I definitely would recommend a shark. And they are reasonably priced.

Another Shark lift away Navigator pro fan here too! I've gone through more vacuums than I can count. I've had consumer reports highest rated (Sears) which I was not impressed with. I've had a Dyson, Hoover, Bissell, etc.. and I never thought the suction was what it should be.

A few months ago my Hoover was having issues, so I searched on online for vacuums and the one that kept coming up with high reviews was the Shark. Costco carries it, so I purchased it there. I could not believe at the amount of pet hair and dirt it picked up. I had just vacuumed with my Hoover the day before and to see what it missed was incredible. I was embarrassed to think that all that stuff was living in my carpet. DH came home from a business trip and asked if I had had the carpets cleaned. It also has a separate microfiber pad attachment for hardwood floors. I am very impressed with that as well. The whole unit is very lightweight and also swivels like the Dyson.

Thought I would report back here. I ended up ordering the Shark Rotator Pro From the TV commercial, And got a free Shark Steam Mop with it. I also ended up springing for the extra attachments. So far I love it! And because I am who I am, I felt the need to justify spending the money. I vacuumed a section of my bedroom carpet, running the Hoover over and over it Until the light turned green, Then went over it a few more times. So it should have been clean, right? WRONG! I went over it with the Shark, And was amazed, shocked and embarrassed at the amount of 'stuff' that it picked up. For years, I have used things like Pet Fresh carpet deodorizer, etc, because I usually have at least one, Sometimes two dogs. I have carefully followed the directions, Leaving it for a bit, then vacuuming it up. I thought. But from what this Shark picked up, I guess the Hoover picked up very little of it. And while the Hoover is self-propelled, it is heavy enough to be hard and awkward to handle. The Shark is amazingly easier! So, so far, I am thrilled with my purchase! It hasn't tipped over yet when I'm using the hose. (Using the hose on the Hoover meant constant tip-overs). And I love the attachments! Haven't tried the steam mop yet, Maybe later today. Of course it remains to be seen how long it lasts, But the 5 year warranty puts my mind at ease. Rusty PS, Again, I thank y'all for your input, I appreciate it a lot. :) third vote for the Dyson- I loathe vacuums. always have. never saw the point in them, honestly- I used a bissel carpet sweeper (you know, the no-tech brush thing) on rugs and took them outside to shake, and wiped everything else down with a damp cloth to deal with dust... we dog-sit for two rottweilers that belong to my BIL, and the place is so 'doggy' that I'm on benadryl from the moment I walk in the door...so, last time, when I walked in and my eyes didn't promptly swell shut, I knew something was up... the Dyson 'animal' was what's up. hair, dander, dust, everything...I even used the brush attatchment, and vacuumed the ROTTIES! bought one three weeks later with the very last of the wedding money, and have used the thing to death. under and behind the fridge, the mattresses, the pillows, behind the radiators, between the bannisters... love it, love it, love it.

I have a dyson. It was a special model offered to employees of Best Buy when our son worked there. He lived at home so we got his discount. I'd been wanting one and was thrilled to get it. That was four years ago and I still love it. I've always loved to vacuum, but then my Mom always had commercial grade vacuums and gave one of her old ones to me when I moved out. When it finally gave out instead of having it rebuilt (which my Mom had done once) we decided to try something smaller and went through a couple brands that were highly rated by Consumer Reports. Never again. That's when we bought our dyson. We have hardwood, ceramic, marble, granite, wall to wall carpet and area rugs. I use my dyson on all of them and our upholstered furniture. I even dust with it because of allergies. Ithas a very long hose that allows me to do our stairs without dragging the upright up the stairs. It also has an attachement for doing hard floors like a canister vac, but I prefer to unengage the brush and use it that way. I highly recommend the dyson if you have pets because dog and cat hair isn't a challenge to this baby. If you want a vacuum that really sucks, get a dyson. You won't regret it.

There's been a few threads started about vacuum cleaners. I bought the Shark navigator lift away pro about 2years ago I guess and still think that it's the best vacuum available. Shark has come out with a few new models which are probably about the same. My cleaning lady has used about every kind of vacuum cleaner made and she tells me every time she comes how much she loves my vacuum. She is saving money to buy one just like it for herself. You can find it at bed bath and beyond and use their 20% coupon, Walmart also has a good price on them but the ones at Walmart have slightly different contents in the box. I got mine at Walmart. It comes with a separate attachment for smooth floors too. We are extremely happy with it and would definitely buy it again and I have highly recommended it to several people. Many of them here and many bought it too.

Here is a third Shark lift away Navigator pro fan. My original yellow Dyson went to heaven 3 months ago, and I bought the Shark from Wal-Mart.

It is twice as light as my old Dyson. Before I got my new Shark, steps to second floor were terrible to clean. Now I just carry the detached canister when I do the steps. Steps are no longer an issue.

It also found dirt that my Dyson never saw. Highly recommend this unit!

I also have the Shark Lift Away, the older model, and it works fine, have had it several years...there's a new one out, the Rotater, that they claim is even better...

I'm in the minority but I returned my Shark Navigator. I found it had to maneuver and too much pressure on my hand.

What ever you buy try it out in the store first.

At the risk of boring you, I love my Shark Navigator Pro. The head swivels, making it relatively easy for me to maneuver. My Dyson got to be too heavy for me.

Woke up in the middle of the night, flipped on the TV and watched an infomercial for the Shark Rocket. I'm a Dyson fan, but it was pretty cool: $160, plus a 5 year guarantee.

Last year, on the recommendation of Raven and my brother (both of whom I trust), I bought a Shark Lift-Away Navigator Pro. I liked it so much that I decided to get another one for another level of the house. This time, I got the Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away 3-in-1 vacuum. It cost a little more, but I love it (it even has the tools to clean out my sewing machines).

I've had Kirby, Kenmore, Hoover, Bissell, Electrolux, etc., but the Shark is my favorite! I've had back and knee surgery, so I appreciate the fact that the Shark is easy to maneuver and not heavy.

Overstock has refurbished Shark Navigators for $114 with free shipping. Wow! I'm inspired to get one and happy to have refurbished. Glad you asked. I keep thinking I can't afford a "real" vacuum, but I really need one. That's affordable. I was just thinking about you and Bob, wondering how you're doing, but seeing how many appliances you've gotten, you're "busy shopping" is the answer! :)

After fixing a neighbors Dyson, my Dh declared it an over rated piece of junk! He then went out and bought himself a Shark Navigator and loves it.

On the Dyson, he did agree that when he called the company about parts that needed replaced under warrenty, they were very efficient in taking care of the claim, even though Dh is not in the business to do repairs.
