Question about Kindle

My sweet husband suprised me last night with a Kindle. I'm really excited to try it, but was wondering where those of you that have Electronic Readers download books? What's the best deal out there?

i've had one for about a month and love it! go to amazon and search for kindle. there are books, (some free) accessories and forums to learn a lot. there a ton of free books as well as under $1 at amazon as well as a site called pixelofink.com.

i bought a great cover with a built in light from amazon that i like very much.

not likely at least not at current price point, there are too many other very good tablets out there and I owm a few that I really like, that do pretty much the same things. Amazon is scrambling to try to catch up to get in the tablet game. It does look like a nice little tablet and at least they did not go nuts with the price point but still a bit high. It uses linux too so would be pretty much like the other Android tablets. But Amazon is putting a lot of Amazon proprietary stuff on it. I already use the Amazon app store to get a lot of the apps I have on my current tablets. the plus points on the fire, it has a dual core processor, it has 1020x600 resolution(ok could be higher), it has Flash ability(as do most Android tablets but not ipad), and according to them it has 8 hr battery WITH wifi OFF. I am doubtful of the actual time that will be interesting to see. They will sell a lot of them simply because people have heard of them, there are a lot of other very good comparable tablets out there but many people don't look or know about them. Amazon has the money to put the advertising out there in your face. Con big one is it does not mention that epub is a supported content, that is a big con since so many book sites are using epub. Now if it allows you to add other ereaders from apps stores that do use epub that would be ok. Just not sure if that is an option. Also not sure how it handles DRM material.

All great answers. We used to not be able to do collections on the kindle app but recently they added that option which is great so that way we can make folders for those that are finished reading or separate them into individual folders for the various persons reading from the same Amazon library. My husband has a folder with his name and his selection of books and I have mine. Some do over lap but the separation helps keep it more organized. I also never remove books from my Amazon library because should you want to loan that book to someone else with a kindle if you removed it well it's gone. You have unlimited space so why remove them? And if you just move the ones you are currently interested in onto the device it is much easier to keep track. And yes leave them at 100%! I wish there was some type of marker they had that would mark the cover as read. You can however add a notation to the book which once you open it and wonder if you have read this you can look at notations and if you added the note that you finished this book you would know. I taught my husband how to do that and put the date he finished it. He reads extremely fast and goes through books like crazy so he really was having a hard time remembering what he had read. I only keep about half a dozen or so books on my device at a time, the ones I want to read next, then I move them into my collections folder for done reading in my name. So I have a folder for Ravens books and one for Ravens finished books same for hubby. I love that they let me know I have already ordered the book because several times I am not sure. I doubt that it would give that warning if you no longer had that book in your library but I don't know for sure because I have never removed a book.

Fran1523 -- Nook owners can lend each book only ONCE, for a period of 14 days. And if you "make the offer to lend" a book but the recipient doesn't accept it within 7 days, or rejects it altogether, you cannot lend it to anyone else. You cannot retract an offer to lend once the offer has been made. The lending feature will be available to Kindle owners very soon, so it is no longer an "advantage" for the Nook. You'll also find many books for less - over 135,000 titles are priced under $5.99" I don't think it's that any particular publishing house won't allow any of its books to be sold to Canada (or any country other than the USA), but it's more on a book-by-book basis. It's just a matter of time before all books available in the USA will be available in other countries. But, as it says on the Amazon web site, you can check the availability of books at any time, so if you're thinking of getting a Kindle, look to see if books you'd want are available. Nooks cannot be sold to anyone outside of the USA, so even with limited e-book availability, the Kindle is obviously the better choice. Nook owners keep mentioning the ability to get library books on their Nooks. I've searched for information on the Barnes and Noble web site, but cannot find anything about this. So, the only comment I can make is that if you have to go to the library to "borrow" the book onto your Nook, I don't see any advantage to that at all. It's so nice, with the Kindle, to be able to download books wherever you are at any time of the day or night. And I would imagine that you only get to have the library book for a specific period of time, and I don't like that at all. When you buy a Kindle book (or download a free Kindle book), it's yours forever. Even if you delete it from your Kindle, you can still download it again for free because it's in your Amazon Kindle account. Kindles in the USA have a one-year warranty. Kindles sold to folks in Canada have a one-year warranty. Canadians would have to send their Kindle to the USA for warranty service. I'm in California, and I'd have to send my Kindle elsewhere in the USA for warranty service, so we're even on that one. :-) Murray's Mom -- LOL! We have at least 800 physical books here in the house (hardbound and paperbacks; and, no, we haven't read all of them), but that didn't stop us from getting Kindles! We have the 2nd generation Kindles, so ours hold approximately 1,500 books each. The latest generation Kindles hold at approximately 3,500 books each. It's a heck of a lot easier to carry 100 books with you on a Kindle than it is to haul 100 physical books around with you! In fact, that's one of the driving reasons when I bought a Kindle for my husband. We both love to read, and when we go on vacation, we both always take books with us. But Hubs pretty much only buys hardbound books, and he tends to buy HUGE (thick) books. Try hauling four big, heavy, hardbound books in a carryon when you're flying somewhere. Ouch. Carrying a Kindle is a breeze. You can pretty much always have the Kindle with you, so you can read whenever you have a few minutes free - like waiting for a meeting to start, or while waiting for a bridge to "do its thing." We have two bridges in Sacramento - the Tower Bridge is a vertical lift bridge, and the I Street Bridge is a metal truss swing bridge. If you get stopped at the I Street Bridge as it begins "its thing," you're going to be there for at least 15 minutes. The Tower Bridge takes about 7-8 minutes. Many medical offices don't have magazines in waiting rooms now because of the risk/potential of passing germs, so if you have your Kindle with you, you get to read what you want to read while you're waiting. :-)

I jjust cranked the font size to the largest available and a capital T is 3/8ths of an inch tall. That is really much larger than the large print I have seen in paper copies of the Reader's Digest. As the font gets larger, fewer lines of text can fit on the screen and the page turn frequency would also be increased. I believe the Kindle can be seen at Best Buy, but when I saw it there it was a dummy book and I don't know if the font size can be viewed. Barnes and Noble has Nooks for sale and they are working books. You could get an idea of font size there. I am very satisfied with my Kindle and take it with me everywhere I go in case I have to wait for any reason. I just read until I can move in traffic or get to the front of the line or get called in for an appointment. My Kindle 3 cost $139 and it is now available for $114 if you are willing to accept advertisements in place of screen savers and at the bottom of the Home page. I don't believe I would mind at all if I had the cheaper Kindle with the ads. Screen savers are just something to click past when I want to "wake" the Kindle and the Home page comes up only if you ask for it. Nncy

I have an iPad but get many of my books from Amazon who makes the Kindle. If you go into their bookstore you will find some free books to start you off. Look on the left hand side of the page for the list mania. I find that "Books on the Knob" updates the free ones regularly. The Gutenberg Project books are free but out of copy write classics. There are scam web sites a plenty offering unlimited books for fifty dollars. Most just give you instructions to find books. I have about 300 books now and have paid for under a dozen. For best sellers, I find Amazon very favourably priced in comparison with the Apple bookstore or Chapters but it pays to check.

I just got one from my fiace for my birthday! i am so excited. I have downloaded the free books from amazon wishing for a kindle on my pc and now I have one. I have no idea how to use it yet but it's just awesome!

As other have said, you can order from Amazon, and the ones you pay for are put on your Amazon account. When you click to purchase, look on the right hand side, and ask for a "sample" of the book. It will automatically download onto your Kindle, at no cost. The sample consists of about 20-30 pages that you can read at any time, and on the last page, you can choose to click to download (and pay) for the entire book or not(at no cost).
I keep 4-5 Samples on my Kindle, so that when I finish reading a book, Idon't have to look for another.
Also, lets me decide(especially with a new author) if I really like the story enough to purchase it.

That's great advice. Thanks Monica! And thanks to all of the other's who have contributed. I downloaded my first book and I have about 5 others that I found that I want to download. I can't believe how fast it is! Can books be shared between others with Kindles or other e-readers?

Because we have the same Amazon account, DH has the Kindle app on his laptop, and reads from there. No extra cost for sharing.

Clairdo2 I had ask about the Kindle just a couple of weeks ago, and got tons of GREAT information about them, everyone was so helpful. Maybe you can go back and search for that topic too, it was very informative.
I love hearing about everyone's experience's with them, I want to get one soon !

I've only bought from Amazon for my Kindle. Wouldn't know how to do anything else.

Unfortunately, you can't "share" books unless the devices are registered to the same Kindle account. Most books can be used by six devices at once but that is left to the publisher. Your place is bookmarked so it isn't lost. You can always retrieve them though when you are finished them- they can be archived. They do not leave clutter, you never have to worry that they won't be returned.

Just thanks - I am thinking of getting a Kindle, and
you guys have given some good information.

I have an I-Pod and use I-tunes, and that is the
easiest thing in the world. I have always had good luck in ordering things
from Amazon - so hopefully the books will be easy too.

Thanks Kat. Clairdo, Amazon has a list of places that you can get electronic books from besides them. it's in there frequently asked question section where they are explaining it will work with multiple types and locations. When you go to the other sites, it will have Kindle in a list of formats and then you download them just like you do on Amazon.

Just a book suggestion here - Amazon.com is offering "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon for free. If you haven't read it, it's REALLY GOOD!

I think they're giving it to you free because it's the first in a series, and once you read the first one, you'll definitely want to buy the rest.

I know - it was the first series ever where I finished it and immediately started on it again. And it got so bad that when I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, I'd have to fight with myself not to pick up the book again.

While I was in Virginia last week, I saw my Aunt's kindle and was very impressed, so I ordered one! LOL! I can't help myself, had to have it. Anyway, my DD suggested that maybe you could get downloads from the public library. I don't know if it's possible, but I'm willing to look into it. I'm sure if you could, it would only be a loan for the standard amount of time, but why not?

Had anybody else looked into the library for this application?

Yes, many libraries have e-books available, but not all.
